My New Year’s Revolution

by MARIA on January 4, 2010

I HATE the word resolution. HATE IT. I don’t mind revolution however, even if doesn’t totally fit, but whatever – I’m sticking with revolution. That’s kind of what I need to get my butt in gear to make some serious changes – A REVOLUTION! Convincing? Meh.

Anyway, on to the list, and feel free to delight in its length.

1. Quitting the Diet Coke addiction: Yes, I’m addicted to this crap, I have been for YEARS. I have my brother to blame for that one. He was the one who drank it all the time, and introduced me to it, while we watched college basketball together. I think he owes me financial restitution, and part of my stomach lining.

2. Starbucks Slowdown: This one pains me tremendously – I love Starbucks. Its my daily thing, my lifeline to my sanity and now I have to cut down and it sucks. Its not so much the cost (pricey much?), but the coffee and accompanying treat is killing me calorie wise. I have the massive ass proof if you doubt me. I’ve decided that Starbucks is going to become a Saturday excursion with the family – I already know this one will be a pisser.

3. Bedtime Before Midnight - I can’t remember when this started, but my bedtime has become extremely late. I can’t remember the last time I went to bed before 2 a.m. I don’t have to tell you that getting up at 7a.m. is like getting my ass kicked with a very pointy shoe, over and over, while two small children scream at me until my ears bleed. I fondly recall my old bedtime routine that involved being in bed by 11p.m (I also recall what sleeping in felt like, but those days are OVER). So the goal is to get to bedtime before midnight.

4. WATER - I can’t remember the last time I had a glass of water –  My stomach is paying the price, so I’m resolving to drink at least 8 glasses of day.

5. MAGAZINE HO NO MO – Yes, I’ve admitted in the past, I am a magazine ho. I buy them ALL THE TIME. I’m addicted – its my crack. But they are now everywhere, and the clutter is getting to me. So even thought it pains me to do it, I have begun to go through them and my recycle bin is overflowing. The recycle dude is going to hate me on next pickup day. In order to keep the situation from getting out of control again, I will try my best to stick with only 2 or 3 per month (as opposed to the 15 I buy now).

6. EXERCISE - Enough said.

7. MEAL PLANNING – I can honestly say that I flat out suck at the whole meal planning/cooking thing. Before children, it really wasn’t a big deal, but its a much bigger issue with the kiddies. The fact that they are both picky eaters, just adds to the stress of it all. Luckily, I received a really nice crockpot for Xmas and I plan to use it often. We’ve also made a plan to go out for dinner or get takeout only once a week, on Fridays.

8. Marry Colin Firth - (oops – how did that get in there?)

9. AN END TO JUNK FOOD – Yes, despite being an educated, well-read individual, I still find myself eating this stuff. The plan is to stop, since every time I eat it now, I get major stomach pains. It may be an ulcer, or it may be by body’s revenge against my idiocy for eating this crap. Either way, it has to end.

That’s all I got for now, although personally I think this list is WAY too long. I think I should keep #8 and get rid of the rest. What? Did I make any resolutions to stop hallucinating? NOPE. #8 is totally possible (that’s right, the enjoyable hallucinations are here to stay).

Here here on #9! But does “junk” food as Trader Joe’s count as junk? Please say no. I ate way too many Veggie Chips. Like the whole bag. Dang it! I need a do-over.

Start a Revolution, girl!

We don’t have a Trader Joe’s in Canada – I wish we did! I say veggie chips are healthy!

Nice one!! I’m with you on that meal-planning thing. Trying it out this week. We’ll see if my spontaneous annoying picky eater self flies with it!
Cheers to making resolutions, I don’t even try… :-P

You’re #1 is where I’m at. Not today, but definitely this year! It’s become out of hand. I’ve already had 3 20z bottles today and it’s not even lunchtime!

I could easily copy and paste your list as my own on my blog! Except for the diet coke. I prefer Cherry Coke Zero.

Maybe I’ll make up my own list. It will probably still be a lot like yours, but not entirely.

I think.

Maria! The Starbucks one? You are a MUCH braver woman than me. I too have said ass but do not have the willpower to give up my indulgence. Good luck!

Best of luck! I’m trying to come up with a “do-able” resolution list myself. Seems like I always start strong and finish weak – must do better this year!

Wow you are way more ambitions than me. I made my resolution nice and general – no real specifics so I wouldn’t feel guilty when I don’t follow through. Oops, that should be IF I don’t follow through – yeah, cause this year is the year I stick to it. (insert rolling eyes here). Anyways, good luck and make sure to check out http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/ for some great slow cooking recipes. You will love your slow cooker, it has taken all the stress out of cooking for me. I also post recipes once a week on my blog (http://www.morethanavillageblog.com/). I’ve been trying to take on more of the cooking/meal planning in my house. It has been a challenge but not as bad as I thought – the slow cooker has certainly helped.

I can’t ever give up Diet Pepsi or Starbucks! But I have like 1 Diet Pepsi a day, or max, 2. Good luck to you, Maria!

I like this post a LOT. First, I like lists. Second, I like that you didn’t say you’d get up at 6 am every day to work out. And third, I like that you have Colin Firth as a personal revolution.

You say you want a revolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world

We can’t be friends anymore – on account of #1, #2, #3, & #9. (Misery loves company, my friend. Misery loves company… and I don’t wanna be the only one up at 1am, drinking a pop & eating junk, while longing for Starbucks! :P )

I don’t know what it is about Diet Coke, but every single person I know who drinks it is addicted. Weird. I’m ditching the junk food too. We don’t eat it all that often anyway, but I know we can do better this year – it really is like feeding yourself the worst crap money can buy. Good list!

The bedtime before midnight thing would kill me.

That time between 10pm and 2am is when I do my best work – and the time I do my work usually uninterrupted. Though, I will say, that getting to bed around 10pm would probably improve my mood.

Also, the drinking water thing? We used to rock the drinking of water around our house when we lived in Florida. I drank my daily recommended allowance x 2, but now? Yeah…I’m with you on the not remembering the last time I just drank water.

And, let’s not even talk about the exercise thing. Okay?

Did the Starbucks cutback last year…now I LOVE my weekly treat more than I ever did my daily fix! As for the meal planning – we started that this year too, and it’s changed our lives – stick with this one if you can, it’s brilliant!

I need to add the bedtime before midnight to my list! Tonight I vowed in bed by 10PM. I was close last night….ready to go down at 11:30 but my litte julie woke up and I was up to 2AM. :(

Good luck with others! In general I feel 2010 is going to be a fun year! Cheers!

Sorry, Colin has been married since 1997. However, it hasn’t stopped me. We got together (read: picture taken) at TIFF in 2008. Then I went to see him while he was filming “Main Street.” Oh, and then he walked into the hotel (where he was staying while filming) when I was eating diner and I looked up at just the right time. He waved, so there has to be something to it, right?

I hope you can quit the Diet Coke (or anything with Aspartame). I quit drinking anything with artificial sweeteners (so bad for you!). Drink that water instead! : )

And I need to do #3 also. Baby isn’t consistent yet with her morning routine so I might get 6 hrs. of sleep or 4, it just depends… Ugh!

Turn back! You are headed in the WAY wrong direction with all these “resolutions” you will feel obligated to keep and guilty when you don’t. (Cause…really… will you keep these?) Join me as I revolutionize resolutions by promising not to do things. It’s so much easier that way. Look on my blog and ignore the snide comments of my grown daughters. (We blog together, proving that I must have been a good parent as at least they still speak to me, in writing, anyway.)
