Use Your Voice

by MARIA on January 29, 2010

I don’t often use my little blog as a way to voice my opinions or fears or anger on certain topics. I leave it to the experts – some great women out there who are great at writing very thought-provoking articles that get people talking. Women like @herbadmother who will kick your ass into submission, and who am I to  mess with perfection.

However, I was HORRIFIED, DISGUSTED and honestly SHOCKED when I read this article in the Globe and Mail, brought to my attention by Her Bad Mother. In her post for the Bad Mom’s Club entitled Bad Moms Don’t Like Non-Consensual Nether- Probing, I read that it is a standard practice for teaching hospitals to allow medical students to practice their pelvic exams on non-consenting, unconscious women who have undergone another surgical procedure, such as a hysterectomy.

So what can you do about this? PLEASE spread the word, let your friends this is happening and go to this link and voice your concerns in the comments about this disgusting practice. You will be signing a “petition” to stop this practice, so go right now and use your voice!!!

I have never felt so violated.

That is sick. I cannot imagine that even happening in a civilized society.

I added my comment:

“I am considering a hysterectomy right now. Thank God in the U.S. I would never, ever consider this okay for me to be a guinea pig after a major surgery. In fact, it would deter me from getting the medically necessary help and surgery I need.

In my opinion, this is rape. Pure and simple.

********Rape by bureaucracy.********

Sickening.

It must stop now.

Furthermore, it is yet one more reason I do not want governmental bureaucracies involved in the U.S. health care system. Canada is often cited as an example as it is and lauded by President Obama supporters.

If this is what it means, NO THANK YOU!

I am still absolutely shocked by this and now am going to ask my doctor some more probing questions to feel sure this wouldn’t happen to me. Feeling paranoid now because as a logical woman, I never would have thought this would be possible in a Western, 1st world government in modern society.

PS Just changed today’s post about my pup’s dog food to this. I don’t think anyone will mind. :) I will get the word out about this. Through blog posts and tweets and stumbles, this will stop!

It’s crazy that if you’re a woman (who has a hooha, as you’ve pointed out) and you’ve been knocked out for surgery, there is a chance you’ve been violated in this way! I blogged about it yesterday, too. “First do no harm.”… Does this practice not completely contradict that?!

That kind of freaks me out because I’ve had things done down there…I don’t want random people poking around when I don’t know about it!!!!!!

A friend of mine got a hold of this article and brought to the attention of our local news station! I’m glad the word’s getting out! You need to be able to TRUST the institutions that are supposed to be there to help you.

Hello, stopping by from SITS! Wow, I’m astonished that this is happening. What happened to consent, especially when it comes to intimate body parts?!

I am horrified that this happens. I think that there should complete & total disclosure as to what will happen during surgical procedures! Nothing should happen without full consent & disclosure.
