I. AM. CANADIAN.

by MARIA on February 28, 2010

We’ve been glued to our seats the last 17 days, watching the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. We have enjoyed so many moments, and most importantly, have truly loved that our children have been able to learn about the Winter Games as well.

As with every Canadian, we were mesmerized by the gold medal hockey game between the Canadian and American men’s teams today. It was a nail-biter, and gave me serious gut rot. But I loved watching my husband and children jumping up and down every time Canada scored a goal. An experience we will always cherish as a family, and as Canadians.

GO CANADA GO!

Our favorite part of the Games was the final men’s hockey game by far, although we also enjoyed the speed skating races. I, personally, also loved K.D. Lang in the opening ceremony, and Neil Young in the closing ceremony.

What are some of your favorites?

My favorite moment(s) have to be when Virtue and Moir won Gold and when Joannie Rochette first stepped onto the ice to do her short program. What amazing competitors…

It’s so hard to believe the Olympics that have been planned and prepared for are finally over. I loved having the world in my own backyard :) Hope everyone comes back to visit!

Like you said, watching my kids jumping around the living room and cheering for our hockey team is gold to me.

It was a great Olympics! I lived in SLC Utah during the 2002 Olympics and it’s always fun when it’s in your home town/country. Renews everyones spirit. Congrats to Canada for a job well done!

Ha! You’re right. Not EVERY Canadian. Only the ones with patriotic spirit. ;)

I love watching the athletes celebrate. Yesterday morning they showed a clip package of all the medal ceremonies and some of the great moments at the events, I felt so proud of all of them.

My kids would wake up every morning asking if we won more medals. They knew exactly where we stood in the standings and each medal count. But they can’t remember to make their beds!

My 5 year old daughter now wants to be an “Olympian”. Sport to be named later. I was glued to the television to the detriment of the housework, my writing, the dishes…

Favorite Moments, in reverse order:

That Sidney Crosby, who took so much grief for not playing to his full potential, scored the winning goal in a hockey game destined to rank with Henderson’s goal in the 1972 series. (that we watched in grade school at school…)

Our ability to mock ourselves with the arm of the cauldron, and then Catriona LeMay Doan rising and looking around in seeming confusion. The “I AM Canadian” featuring every stereotype, including the world’s largest table hockey game.

Marianne St-Gelais’ reaction to Charles Hamelin’s gold medals.

Some of the best curling I’ve ever seen. Men AND women.

Joannie Rochette. I still can’t watch it without crying. May she now find some peace and privacy to grieve.

Virtue and Moir, but especially, that, in true Canadian fashion, he said “thank you so much” to her at the end of it.

The spontaneous “Oh Canada” that burst out everywhere. The fact that it has somehow become okay to be proud to be Canadian. That is the legacy of the torch relay, and hopefully, the lasting legacy of the games.

That chiefs of the First Nations were treated as heads of state and welcomed as such. You need to have courage and patience to sit with a whack of black feathers all over your face.

That so many of our athletes achieved personal bests.

Frederic Bilodeau.

I loved ‘watching’ the ceremonies and hockey with everyone on Twitter. So cool.

I didn’t get to watch much of it live, because of all TV’s in the house being inoperable for a few weeks, (long story), but the hockey game was riveting. Joannie Rochette, her bravery made me cry. And it’s not really Olympian, but the segment on Gander, Newfoundland was one of the most moving things I have ever watched.

Maria, I just have to say, your country made these Winter Olympics. You were splendid hosts and I, for one, love your fair country.

I truly never do this, but I wrote a post today about you folks and your wonderfuliciousness if you have a chance . . . Don’t let the title offend you.

Beautiful! The title of your post actually gave me goosebumps. I LOVE CANADIANS! I LOVE THE OLYMPICS! :)

The closing ceremonies actually made me cry, but not because of Canada, lol.

I blogged about it. :) (Wink, wink, nudge, nudge)

Well my favourite part of these amazing Winter Games was seeing our Nation come together in spirit, defeat and victory. I have never been more proud to be Canadian…it’s amazing because there are many nations that have true pride…look at highschool sports in the US; at Soccer in Europe (especially); however, I don’t think in our lifetime, we would have ever seen Canada come together until the Olympics…

I do have to say that aside from the great performance by Neil Young, and KD Lang I am a little miffed as to how the selected group of performers for the closing ceremoneis were chosen….It would have been great to see The Hip perform; but my daughter (who is 5) said it best…”Mom..we can’t be the best at everything! And we did just win the hockey game…why would you care who is singing?”

True Dat daughter…

Have a great day!

I loved watching the short-track speed skating. I never realized that it was more than just skating really fast! Watching them, you see how much strategy was involved, and the races were all down to the wire.

I love the Olympics!! Canada did a great job as a host. Such great stories — I love the short track and the skiing. Great fun! Feels like it is over before it starts
