R.I.P. Swimmy

by MARIA on September 20, 2010

My son’s fish died last night.

I blame the husband.

When I was in NYC for Blogher last month, my husband thought it was a good idea to go out and buy the six year old a fish, to teach him responsibility. I think he did it because I wasn’t around to stop him. He gets so ballsy when I’m too far away to stop him from being all autonomous and shit.

So, I got home from NYC, and the first thing I see is a little blue fish in this tank and a very smiley boy, showing off Swimmy.

Swimmy. Named after the fish on I Carly.

Yes, my kids know that show exists. Big parenting failure on my part.

Most annoying t.v. show ever.

Anywho, the fish is no longer. Seems it up and DIED for some reason.

I’m not going to lie – I totally predicted it happening. It’s a fish after all. I’m not all that heartbroken about it either – sadly can’t say the same for the six year old.

He cried himself to sleep last night.

My husband’s idea of making him feel better? Telling him that he could get a new fish today, because evidently pet fish are a dime a dozen.

NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

I may not be weeping over Swimmy the fish, but the least we can do is not replace him the next day, like I replaced that high school jock boyfriend with the rocker, troublemaking dude, pretty much the second he up and dumped me because I sucked at sports. Rocker dude was so much hotter by the way. Good times.

Personally I think we should immortalize Swimmy by filling his tank with Legos and then NEVER replacing him.

Seriously, let’s show Swimmy some respect.

Also, I hate fish.

Poor Swimmy! We have guppies and the darn things won’t die. I’m not trying to kill them or anything but they really have the odds against them with how many times I forget to feed them or the lack of cleansing of their tank and the one with the disfigured spine..it’s just mind boggling to me how these things are still alive.

We have 3 goldfish that we’ve had for over a year. They keep going strong, to my surprise, even through ichy fish diseases and all.

My husband did the same thing, only we’ve had this 50 gallon fish tank since our oldest was around 3 months. He thought it a good idea to sit the infant in front of it for entertainment, but didn’t think the infant would turn into a toddler who develops intense emotional attachments to things lol. So far we’ve been lucky with magically replacing the fish (stuck to fantail goldfish-easy to replace w/ a similar looking one).
However a few months back (http://www.deepnthought.com/archives/1252) the mother-in-law’s other grandchild got a gold-fish at the fair and they didn’t want to take care of it. They asked us if we wanted it and we sad “No”, and two days later she came by with it, some food, and asked Vera if she could take care of it until they get a tank for it…. Yeah. Needless to say the fish died.

After a few goldfish have kicked the bucket we have upgraded to a betta. We’ve had him for 3 months? He’s still going strong. I hate fish too and make my husband do all the work since it was his gig too.

Swimmy was a beta too, and we were told that they live a long time – not in our house evidently.

LOL! This was hilarious! (not for your son though, of course. Sorry buddy!) We used to have fish when my oldest was young, but they kept dying (my husband was in charge of cleaning the bowl, and let’s just say he didn’t think about water temperatures or adjustment periods)! After three deaths, and probably a scarred-for-life child, we agreed no more fish! :-) RIP Swimmy!

In my teenage years, I won a goldfish at a fair. My mom just adored this darn fish and one day I came home from school and she had cleaned out a huge UTZ pretzel container and said “look, the fish has his own ocean now”. Would you believe that fish got enormous! No joke, I think he must have been about 10 inches long (including his beautiful fins)! That fish (I swear I do not even remember his name even though I should) lived for almost 10 years! I remember the day it died, she called me and was so upset. LOL!

Ah, Swimmy was a good fish! He was such a great swimmer. If only he could have taught the Hubby how to swim away from the pet store!

Come by when the funeral is over…

When I was little, I had this hand held fish tank with a fake fish inside that really swam. He had a magnet inside him or something, and you could press different buttons to make him swim in different directions. You should get one of those for your son. Pick me up one too, if you find them.

Oh god. Is that what husbands do when wives leave town? Buy fish for little boys? Thanks for tipping me off. I hate fish too.

Awww, poor Swimmy.
Your son has probably already forgotten about him today…maybe? M lost a pet frog, and it took her a couple days to get over it and then she forgot she still had another. Either she mourned quickly, or she has some sort of post-traumatic stress issue.

Yeah, he’s pretty much over it at this point. Poor Swimmy – gone AND forgotten.

I had a Beta that lived for 3 years! That seemed like such a long time to me! The only pet I am willing to let the kid get is a fish. I am not down to clean up after a dog and when our cat, ahem, kicks the bucket, we aren’t replacing her either! I am anti pets I guess…especially any rodent or reptile related pets. Shudder!
