This post was inspired by a post written on the MommieDaze blog, because I love a good list, and who hasn’t thought about what their lives were like before the kids……
Admit it……..ON A DAILY BASIS PEOPLE!!!
So what’s different?
What did I have before I had the little people?
- Smaller dust bunnies – they’re so big now, they startle me. Also, I have named them.
- A closet full of size 6-8 clothing – mind you, they’re mostly still there, collecting dust (see above).
- A much less paranoid and obsessive focus on germs - seriously, I own stock in Purel.
- Clean things – my carpet is literally crunchy. Also, my couches look like they’ve been through a war, and lost.
- Zero need to know every detail about one’s bodily functions – I can predict when my 6 year old will poop – for real.
- A memory – Remember those days when you could remember things? I don’t.
- The ability to travel without taking along half of our belongings – I still haven’t gotten over how much STUFF we have to lug when travelling with the kiddies.
- Less reason to constantly contemplate my mortality – seriously my husband wouldn’t last a day on his own.
- The understanding that I wouldn’t turn into my mother after having kids – then I became a mother. MY mother.
- NO IDEA how much I would fall in love with the little fruit of my loins – they really should come with warning labels for your heart.
So, spill people – what would be on your list?

I could watch crime shows without completely falling apart when they involve children.

LOL!! So many of these would be on my list too. Numbers 4, 6 and 8 especially!
Love it! Clean things? What are those? I don’t remember. Thanks for the link!

Great list
On a particuarly raucous evening in our house DH pleaded “please don’t ever leave me”. The boys would eat him alive!
I miss having a house with zero toys. Nothing that talks when you step on it in the middle of the night, scaring the crap out of you. That’s what I miss the most.

Me too!! And I would like all that money that I’ve spent on said toys, back in my wallet.
I miss sleep. Sleeping all the way through the night. Sleeping in! With the added bonus of being able to stay up late because you know don’t have to get up early.

My kids are good sleepers (right now anyway), but sleeping in on the weekends is sorely missed.
Seeing movies whenever I wanted to! Movies are what I miss most about my pre-kid life.

We used to go out to the movies at least twice a week before the little people arrived. I can’t remember the last time I went, and I’m pretty sure it was a kid movie when I did last go.
I’m sitting here reading your post with my EMPTY coffee table in view. Do you remember when you actually had STUFF on your coffee table like magazines and knick-knacks? I do.
Oh and my car used to be immaculate and I would freak when I used to see my brother’s car (he also has 3 kids who are teenagers now). And now, MY car is the PIT! ACK!
Great list.
p.s. I have “pet” dust bunnies too!

Decor on tables, that was nice. So were things that weren’t broken. I think everything in my house has either been ripped apart or shattered and duct taped or super glued back together if we could. There is no such thing as keeping nice things where kids are concerned.

You’re so right. I find something broken or severely injured on a daily basis. It used to totally aggravate me, now I just dream of sugardaddies who come bearing new furniture. And diamonds of course.
I watched TV. I slept. Then I watched more TV. And slept some more. Ah the good ol’ days…

Love, love, love this list. It’s hilarious but more importantly, it’s SO true.
What I miss, on top of what you already listed, is the ability to be spontaneous. The moment you have to plan around naptimes, bedtimes, sitters and what you can fit into the diaper bag, it takes the fun out of spontaneity.

Honestly Justine, I could have added at least another ten things and spontaneity is a big one!! To drop everything for a weekend or overnight trip just for the hell of it, I wish!
I miss going out with the girls for hours for a coffee just because and on a whim. Somehow sipping on my cold coffee between coloring books & playdates just doesn’t feel the same.
OMG, I totally say “me too” to all of these except the turning into my mom one (I believe she should never have had kids!). My own list would be lengthy!… I think I may have to borrow this idea.

Books. Reading just for the sake of a good story. A story not related to my wonderful children. And maybe a hot bath to read them in…
Great list!

All very true! And thank you for mentioning the dust bunnies, I feel better now. Love that shot of your kids too!

Relaxing vacations! Now when I am sitting on the plane with 2 childrening, whining, complaining I wonder if it is worth going at all.
Great List!
How about a vocabulary that didn’t include such frequent references to the “potty” and “dipes” (our abbreviation for “diaper”) and far less use of the word “no”?
Great list! Thanks, Maria.

I used to, you know, sleep. And to tag along with one of yours, I used to have full dinner conversations where I didn’t interrupt myself to announce that a certain someone “has the poop look” and needs to get thyself to a potty, stat.
Sigh.
Double sigh.

I used to be the proud owner of time to pee by myself. I know this seems like a crazy request, but just once I’d like the door to stay shut. Also I miss eating dinner whever I want to…not when small things are hungry.

UUUmmmmmm HHhmmmmmm,
Oh, the good ol’ days. When time was your own and going pee didn’t draw an audience!
I hear ya sister!!!
