Becoming a Big Kid

by MARIA on August 31, 2011

My four year old queen bee (almost five) just lost her first tooth recently. I have to admit that I was SHOCKED when I discovered she even had a loose tooth. She smiled one day and I noticed one of her bottom teeth looked crooked, so I touched it and sure enough, it was loose. She was ECSTATIC when I told her – I was weepy. First comes the loose tooth, then comes college – it’s a natural progression.

HOW did this happen?

Only yesterday I was potty training her and feeding her pureed fruit and rocking her in my arms while tickling her under her chin to make her giggle. I was overloaded with all the stuff one needs to survive with a baby, and now we’re good to go with a juice box and a Barbie. She used to be in diapers, and learning to stay dry at night with GoodNites®, and now she’s locking the door to go to the bathroom like a “big girl.” I just don’t know where the time went quite frankly.

She starts Senior Kindergarten in a week. She’s starting to read, and she can even tell time now. She has always been very independent and really gutsy and brave no matter the task, but at least she was still little. This bossy little peanut was putting her older brother in his place on more than one occasion, and begging to help empty the dishwasher, while barely being able to get dressed or brush her teeth.
But now, she does it all herself. She’ll let me do her hair, but that’s about it. She even refuses a haircut because with long hair, she looks like Ariel from The Little Mermaid. This is a big deal to a four year old, in case you didn’t know. And we talk about her upcoming birthday every single day because this is what four year olds care about – this and chocolate and “fwends and pwesents”.

As a mom who cannot stop time (believe me I try on a daily basis), I marvel at the new little accomplishments that appear every day. Sometimes, I have to hide so that I can cry it out, but mostly I cheer the four year old who’s busting with pride.

I made that.

I also made a seven and a half year old, but don’t get me started on how big he is, and how no matter how hard I try, I can’t rock him in my arms anymore.

It’s a fact I have to accept – I have two big kids now.

Two big, lovely, sweet, funny, smart kids who are growing up and bringing me joy with every second they are in my life.

As a mom, that’s all I can ask for.

I just had my son’s 7th birthday party and my 4 year old is wishing for a loose tooth like his, so I can totally relate to this – it’s hard!

Her hair is quite Ariel-like! So pretty. I’m kinda in awe that she lost a tooth at age FOUR!

And as much as I don’t want K to grow I am looking forward to her being potty-traineed! ;)
