I believe teaching my children to be polite and kind to people is one of my most important roles as a mom. I think in reality, it’s a “little” thing that can make a big impact in their lives and others as well. Of course, being aware of one’s environment and how important it is to care for and respect the environment is another thing that kids need to know from a young age. That is why I really wanted to write about the Do Something Little, Help Something Big initiative.
Energizer has partnered with Evergreen on this great campaign to make the earth a little greener. Evergreen is a “not-for-profit organization committed to making Canadian cities greener and more livable. ” The Do Something Little, Help Something Big initiative is all about caring about the environment and your community, and as such, Energizer has contributed $100,000 toward this fantastic campaign. You can also be a part of this and make a difference – go the website and choose five positive acts that you promise to do, and Energizer will donate $1 to Evergreen.

Here are the five things I pledged:
1. I will donate my children’s books to the school library.
I actually do this every year. We love books in our home, but there is never enough room to keep all of them. So once we outgrow certain books, we give them to my kids’ public school. Although it’s hard for me/us to part with them, it makes us happy to know that other children will enjoy them.
2. I will unplug cell phone chargers and computers when not in use.
We are guilty of this one for sure – leaving our laptops and phones plugged in and on all day and all night. So I know this will definitely benefit us cost-wise while helping the environment, and it really is a small thing that can contribute to a big result, so why not .
3. I will tell my kids how much I love them.
This one is easy for me. We tell our kids we love them several times a day, every day. I really believe you can’t tell your kids enough. I come from a home where you knew you were loved, but you didn’t necessarily hear it that often. I knew that I wanted my kids to hear it and be able to say it just as easily. It’s such an easy thing to do to make someone feel good. I will never stop telling my kids either – no matter how old they get. I hope they do the same.
4. I will donate clothes I don’t wear to charity.
I JUST did this this past weekend. It’s a great way to purge and declutter your home and closets, while helping out others and keeping it out of landfills. So easy.
5. I will do my laundry during off peak hours.
I also started to do this one recently to be more cost effective on our electricity bill. Although it’s not always convenient to do laundry during these hours, I have pledged to do it to contribute to this great initiative.
