Toshiba Thrive Tablet – Review and Giveaway – CLOSED

23rd November 2011

Ho Ho Ho  – it’s that time of year where giving things away warms my cockles. So when given the opportunity to review and give away a 10″ Toshiba Thrive tablet from Toshiba Canada, I jumped at the chance. Personally I was also very excited to check it out because I’ve been dreaming about a tablet for a while now. (Thanks Santa – Santa being Toshiba Canada)

So let’s get some of the basics out of the way:

  • Thrive has a 10.1” diagonal high-res multi-touch LED backlit display
  • It has full size ports – one USB port, an HDMI output, a mini-USB port, an SD memory card slot and a standard 3.5mm headphone jack.
  • It has a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and onboard flash memory in 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB.
  • It has a 2-megapixel front-facing camera and a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera.
  • It is priced competitively at $379 for the 8GB model, $399 for 16GB and $479 for 32GB.
So what did I think of the Thrive? For me there were several things to love about this tablet:
  • I enjoyed the size of the display.
  • Love the addition of all the useful ports. It was easy to connect it to our television to watch a movie  and  also download my documents to it.
  • I really liked the textured back of the tablet and also that you can switch it out for a different colored back (five colors available at $20 each).
  • It is really fast – downloading apps was lightning quick as were using the apps themselves.
  • I liked the look and reactiveness of the touchscreen.
  • Lots of great apps included with the tablet and many available for download (most of the greats were free too).
  • Great battery power (I got on average 8 hours on a single charge) and love the completely removable battery.
  • Great very affordable priced tablet.
Things that I didn’t totally love about the Thrive:
  • It’s a bit heavy – heavier than most of the tablets out there (weighs 1.66 lbs) but I liked that it felt sturdy and not so fragile that letting my kids play with it, would make me nervous.
  • The camera didn’t take great pics (they seemed blurry and unclear). Also, when in landscape mode, because of where the camera is located, I accidentally covered the camera with my fingers almost every time. I found myself cleaning the smudges off of it constantly.
Of course there is tons more info about the Thrive here on the Toshiba Canada website, so make sure to check that out as well.

Ok wait… Technically THiS is my first entry (the mandatory one). If I won, I’d wrap it up and put it under the tree for the family from Santa 🙂

I’ve been finding myself on the road quite a bit lately and in need of a tablet to keep me plugged in. So this Toshiba would be a Christmas present from Santa, yes I still believe, to me.

Hi! I would probably keep it for a gift to myself and my husband since we aren’t exchanging gifts this year! It would be awesome for my kids to play with. I already follow you on twitter as @elle-0310310. Will do the “likes” later today! Thx for the opportunity!

I will give the tablet to my personal hero, my hubby. He’s an incredible dad & frequently stays home with the kids so I can pursue interests of my own, like cooking classes. He’s a huge tech geek so this tablet would absolutely make his Christmas spectacular & show him how much we appreciate him!

    Hi Maria,

Ive been eyeing the Toshiba Tablet for some time now and I appreciate your honest review. In all honesty, I would probably keep it for myself because in this one-income family, we cant always afford to buy new electronics. Plus, its a great thing to have on hand for long road trips with the family. My daughter would love it to play games or watch a movie.

    Thanks for hosting!

I follow you on Twitter (@AlwaysARedhead) plus I have already liked you on facebook. I would use the Tablet for myself but share it with my husband, he would probably enjoy it while at his work (of course that is probably when I would want it). Hubby and I may end up having sharing issues.

Should I be smiled upon and the 10″ Toshiba Thrive™ find its way to into my keeping, I would feel need to switch it on give it a review of my own. If the rectangular palette technology survive my scrutiny, then I would consider it my own. Should I choose to set it free, it would find its way to my parent’s home where they could be baffled for a few months, then come to know and “thrive” with their new gizmo.

Just this one entry for me. I wish truly chosen by luck.

Also a thank you to Lindsey for making me away of this contest.

Seeing as my wife directed me to this blog, it would only be appropriate to “gift” it to her. But since I’m the geeky half of our union, I’d probably get my fair share of use out of it as I tell her I need to ‘tweak it’…

I’l already following you and Toshiba. Would love to get a Toshiba tablet. I actually saw some Toshiba Android tablets at #SCCTO and they were hot. I’d use it to navigate Flash gaing sites which should come in handy to entertain the baby as she gets older (The iPads’s don’t let you access Flahs sites for kids due to lack of Flash support).

Hehe… I would totally be selfish and wrap it up for myself under the tree. I asked my hubby what he was getting me for Christmas and he said, “same as last year.” (Which means nothing!) So, this would be perfect to win!

I would definitely be using it for myself. I have been looking at tablets for a few months now and while this old laptop kicks the bucket it would be amazing to have a brand new and very portable data/media device. The Toshiba tablet is set-up to be a laptop replacement and after test driving one in a shop a month ago it is at the top of my list for sure.

    Hey Maria,

I would give it away but since I’m the one without an iPhone (darling husband) or iPad(every member of my family) I would keep it for me and my 3 kids, because they’d get more use out of it!

Hi. I follow you on GFC and I would give it to my daughter, Ainsley, 7. Ainsley has epcial needs and must have a variety of ways in which to interact with curriculum. Instead she gets a techer struggling with limited resources at school and us trying our best at home to help at end of day when she is dead exhausted by being in grade two with special needs in a room that is supposedly inclusive.

She could really use an interactive device to help her learning. We need one that is all her own and I keep getting recommended the ipad from other moms with kids who have special needs. But I love Toshiba as a brand. Can’t afford either frankly but would love to win one.

I would love to win this for Xmas for my daughter then she could use it with our help to help her manage at school.

thanks for the contest. Paula @inkscrblr

Throwing my vote in for Bree to have a merry christmas and win. Hope things get better in 2012.
