Cold And Flu Season Is Coming #HealthyFamilies

6th November 2012

I loathe this time of year for many reasons:

  • Snow
  • Cold things
  • Less sunlight
  • Snow
  • Freezing my tush off in carpool pickup because I refuse to wear a winter coat.
  • My empty wallet – I blame Santa.
  • And of course, germs. Then again, germs are always on the loathe list.
But this time of year also means that cold and flu season is on it’s way.

We are so lucky!

Ugh, the MAN COLD is pure pain. Am I right, ladies?

It’s hard to deal with man colds and being sick, but the kids being sick is so much worse. I hate when they have colds or the flu – they get all grumpy and pathetic and sad, and oy I hate it. We talk about germs all the time (Mommy is a germaphobe after all), and the things we can do to try to stay as healthy as possible this time of year.

I like to remind them that germs are basically like BUGS (yes, I am a doctor too). The goal is to keep their hands out of their mouths and noses and if fear works, then I’m all for it. Of course, the six year old is a nail biter and the eight year old thinks soap is overrated, so mommy’s tactics might not be as effective after all. At home, it’s much easier to remind them about germs and washing their hands, and I do so A LOT. However, because I can’t be with them at school, all I can do is keep reminding them to wash their hands before they eat and after they’ve gone to the bathroom. I do know that having a routine at home will make it more likely that they’ll continue the routine at school. Hopefully.

I also say, ‘Don’t pick your nose’, ‘Stop biting your nails‘ and ‘Wash your hands‘ about one million times a day (and I’m pretty sure that’s a conservative number).

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go wrap the kids in plastic wrap and put them to bed in their respective bubbles.
