Kid’s Corner on the Windows 8 Phone #SummerSwitch

19th July 2013

One of the best features on the new Windows 8 phone for me, as a mom, is the Kid’s Corner. Kid’s corner is ” basically a phone within your phone” that is dedicated to the little people in your life.

To get to Kid’s Corner on the Windows 8 phone, instead of swiping up to get into your phone, you swipe to the left and once you’ve downloaded it onto your phone, you’re there!

The Kid’s Corner basically allows your kids to play games, take pictures, draw, play music and watch videos and use a number of apps, without having to worry that they will accidentally access your phone and mess with your setup. Also, you have the control of what they can access by choosing what you download into the Kid’s Corner area of the phone. The kids will be able to open and access Kid’s Corner on their own, while your stuff is protected (you will have to setup a password to do this). Kids will also be able to customize their Kid’s Corner by changing the colors and even the placement and sizes of the tiles.

There are thousands of apps, games and music available to purchase that you can add to Kid’s Corner to make it fun for your kids. You’ll find tons of family friendly, educational  and classic options in the games section, as well as music and videos. Once you’ve decided what you want to add to the phone, you can then choose what they can or can’t access in the Kid’s Corner, with the convenient toggle feature. Rather than deleting an app for example, you can toggle it off and it will no longer show in the Kid’s Corner until it is toggled on again.

My kids LOVE Kid’s Corner and I like that I can hand the phone to them without worrying about what they’re doing or deleting off my phone. The camera takes amazing pictures, even when little people are the photographers. The speakers are nice and loud so they can enjoy it together, without using or sharing ear phones. Both my six year old and nine year old have both really enjoyed playing  with the cool drawing apps like Draw Free! and Create Studio.

Kid’s Corner is just another great feature of the Windows 8 Phone that you should definitely check out!

Disclosure:  I am a part of the #SummerSwitch Challenge.  The Nokia 920 Windows 8 phone was provided to me to use for the challenge my Microsoft Canada.  As well, I will receive compensation for my participation in this event.  All opinions expressed are my own.

I’m Doing The Microsoft Canada #SummerSwitch Challenge

27th June 2013

Hello Lovelies!!

I was invited to take part in the Microsoft Canada #SummerSwitch Challenge this summer.  So, I’ve put aside my beloved iPhone 4 aside (we sleep together, seriously) to test out the Nokia Lumia 920 phone Windows 8 phone.

As someone who uses both Microsoft and Apple products on a daily basis, I thought it would be a great opportunity to finally try out the Windows 8 platform.

First Impressions?

  • IT’S SO FLUFFY!!! Translation: Super nice looking phone.
  • It’s big with a nice big screen! I LOVE the 4.5″ screen – especially for watching videos or movies.
  • The phone is so adaptable to your needs that the setting up of the phone is really half the fun. That sounds super dorky I suppose, but dorky is so in right now.
  • The back button may be the best thing ever invented for a phone. I LOVE it and use it constantly. Seriously, it is fantastic.
  • It’s definitely heavier than my iPhone.

My favorite things about this phone so far:

  • The camera on this phone takes amazing photos and with the numerous apps available with the camera, you can get some amazing results.
  • The speaker volume on this phone is nice and loud which I really appreciate – I can watch videos and movies using the Vevo and Netflix apps (LOVE) and the sound is clear and loud (old lady hearing requirement).
  • Again, the back button is definitely a favorite – use it all the time.
  • As a blogger using WordPress, the WordPress app is excellent and you could easily blog from your phone using it – love that.
  • Kid’s Corner is such a great option if you have kids – it allows you to create a separate area on your phone for your kids that will amuse them with fun apps, while keeping your phone totally separate. It is such a great idea and my kids use it as the reason they keep stealing the phone because they believe it gives them about 40% ownership. Kids are so cute.

As someone who uses Twitter and Facebook every single day, the absolute best thing about this phone for me is the PEOPLE and PHOTO section. The PHOTO section not only holds the photos you take with the camera but also compiles all your photos that you have in your Facebook, Twitter and any other accounts that you’ve set up on your phone, into different albums. In the PEOPLE section, each contact appears with all their contact info but also shows their updates (from FB, etc) and allows you text, email and call them from their contact page. Also in the PEOPLE section, you can use the Family Room section to invite people and then privately share your calendars, photos, group chats and notes in one place – very, very cool feature.

I’ve only scratched the surface of all the cool features on this phone. Next post, I’ll explore some more including the XBOX features that are a gamer’s dream!!

Disclosure:  The Nokia 920 Windows 8 phone was given to me to use for the Microsoft Canada #summerswitch Challenge, and I will receive compensation for my participation.  Regardless, all opinions are my own.

Disney iHome Portable Water-Resistant Stereo Speaker System – Review

23rd March 2012

I was recently sent a Disney iHome Portable Water-Resistant Stereo Speaker System (yes that’s a mouthful) to review. The Disney iHome line is a fun collaboration of iHome products, geared towards the younger set. Minnie Mouse, Phineas & Ferb, Jack (from Nightmare Before Christmas) and my beloved Kermit the Frog all adorn the product line that includes earphones, headphones, stereo speaker, portable speaker and alarm clock speaker system.

I happen to own other iHome products and I’ve never been anything but very happy with them, so I knew the iHome kids’ product line would be great as well. I will say, that I LOVE this portable stereo speaker system.

Here’s why:

  • They are really cute. Kermit the Frog?! – enough said.
  • It’s water – resistant, which makes it great for the beach, or a kid with snacks.
  • It works with all iPod models!
  • It has premium speakers, so it has really nice sound for an inexpensive portable speaker system.
  • It has two headphone jacks, which is great for sharing and allowing two people to listen at once.
  • It has an easy on/off button.
  • It zips closed, which then transitions to a convenient handle to be able to carry it around.

My five year old has officially claimed the “Kermit stereo” as her own – she LOVES it. The great thing is that I’m able to connect my iPod, zip it up and not worry about breakage. Even if it’s dropped, it has a heavy duty outer case that will protect against any damage to my iPod. She loves the handle and sometimes carries it like a purse which is really cute. She’s even shared it with her brother, allowing him to plug in his own earphones and listen to music together (using the headphones, disables the speaker temporarily).

The Disney iHome Portable Water-Resistant Stereo Speaker System is available for $39.99. Check out other Disney iHome products on their site.

Disclaimer: I was sent the above speaker system for the purposes of a review, but my thoughts are my own.

The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GF3X camera

20th December 2011

Happy Holidays Everyone!!

FIVE MORE DAYS ’til Christmas and I don’t know about you, but I am STILL not done shopping!

But instead of worrying about my shopping , I would love to share what is on my Christmas wish list instead, because I know you are DYING to know what to get me this year!

I would love:

  • Philosophy products (especially the Coconut Bath Gel)
  • Parks & Recreation Season 3 on DVD
  • Peace on Earth or Colin Firth – whichever is easier
  • A Starbucks gift card
  • Underwear of the non-wedgie variety
  • OR perhaps a new camera, like the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GF3X (yes, I am aces at the segues)

The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GF3X was recently reviewed on the UrbanMoms site by Jennifer and she loved it! Here’s an excerpt of her review:

I am my family’s photographer. It’s a role that I take quite seriously because I, more than anyone else, enjoy reviewing the photos that capture our lives together. I’m the one who downloads them onto the computer, spends time editing, selecting favourites for screensavers, prints, photobooks, and gifts.

I take pride in my role and in my skills. I’ve taken photography courses, done extensive research before buying any camera, carry cameras with me wherever we go, and am quick to pull them out and chronicle our days photographically. But I’m always looking to improve my skills, my tools and my end results.

So, when I was asked to review the new Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GF3X camera, I jumped at the opportunity. I’ve spent the last week playing with this beautiful camera and I’m… Click here to read the full review (link:  http://www.urbanmoms.ca/trend_watch/2011/12/i-am-my-familys-photographer.html )

HP Photosmart eStation All-in-One printer Review & Giveaway

17th May 2011

Recently I received a package with some fabulous goodies from HP Canada, including an HP Photosmart eStation All-in-One printer. It was definitely one of those great mail days, and we needed a second printer so it was pure awesome.

I decided to set up the printer at my own desk (because I’m greedy like that) and it took less than ten minutes from start to finish. It was a very simple setup with clear, easy to follow instructions.

So let’s get the obvious stuff out of the way: this all-in-one is a printer, scanner, copier and has all the joys of wireless capability. So, the printer can be connected to your wireless connection, and requires no wires other than to be plugged in. Less cord clutter is always a win.

So what makes this printer really special? Two things  make it a winner for me – first is the ability to e-print (printing from any email-enabled device). I love that I can print an email from my phone to the printer, no matter where I am. This is possible because each printer has it’s own unique email address – and it definitely works great, I’ve already used it twice. LOVE this feature. Secondly, is the detachable wireless companion called ZEEN. The Zeen, is a 7″ full colour detachable wireless companion, and makes this printer absolutely unique. Using the Zeen, you can surf the net, check your email and Facebook and much more. It comes with tons of apps that are great for printing everything from coloring pages for the kids and Martha Stewart recipes, to crosswords and pictures. My children are obsessed with it and all the fun craft options we can access through the apps.

The HP Photosmart printer retails for $299, is fast and quiet, and produces nice quality (even double-sided!) documents.

Flip for the Holidays! REVIEW & GIVEAWAY!

22nd December 2009

Product Display

Its that time of year again – the holidays bring out the best in parents, don’t you think? Even if you’re not big on photos and videos and traditions, its seems that the holidays really make us a try a little harder to get those special moments recorded for future appreciation. I’m big on the pictures – I try to get a picture of anything and everything that may or may not be something to remember. I will admit that I’m not as good with the videos. We have a larger camera (by today’s standards anyway), and its jut not convenient to carry it around to capture those everyday moments that I may get with my kids.

Thankfully, this is no longer a problem. I was lucky enough to receive a FLIP Ultra HD Video Camcorder to review for a giveaway from Mom Central Canada,  and I cannot tell you enough, how much I LOVE this camera. Its small and fits in the palm of your hand, but has a nice, solid weight to it; this is not some flimsy mini camera. Its beyond fabulous, and features include a 2″ LCD screen, 120 minutes of recording time (8MB) AND it shoots video in High Definition. All of the Flip cameras come equipped with FlipShare, a software that allows you to save, edit and organize your videos easily. You just plug it into your laptop with the attached USB arm, and go from there. Its extremely user friendly and it is easy to upload your videos to YouTube or any other online sharing sites.

Here is a video of my little people that I made with this Flip camera:

This is the perfect gift for anyone on your list! I would personally gift this to my younger sister who is pregnant with her second child, and will need a video option that is lightweight and portable. The Flip was made for her! What about you? Who would you gift a FLIP to, and why? You may just get the chance. I am giving away a FLIP ULTRA HD Video Camcorder, thanks to Mom Central Canada.

HOW TO ENTER:

Please leave a comment below telling me who you would give a FLIP ULTRA HD  to and why! That’s it! One ENTRY and you are entered to win this FABULOUS CAMERA!!

RULES:

1. OPEN TO CANADIAN RESIDENTS ONLY!!

2. You must be 18 or older to win.

3. The winner will be chosen randomly using random.org, and will be contacted for their information to receive their prize in the new year!

(I received a Flip Ultra HD Video Camcorder to review for this giveaway, but can assure you my love for this product is my own!!)
