Help Feed Children With Cuddle + Kind

23rd November 2015

cuddle-and-kindThis is Everest.

He’s 20″ of cute – hand-knit with premium yarn, stuffed with hypoallergenic goodness and non-toxic. He was handmade in Peru using Fair Trade practices. And when you purchase Everest, you’re not just buying a sweet knit doll, you are also providing ten meals to children in need in North America and around the world, through the World Food Program USA* and Children’s Hunger Fund.

Everest is just one of nine super adorable knit dolls available from Cuddle + Kind. You can also choose from two lovely mermaids (Isla & Pearl), two cute reindeer (Willow & Scout), two sweet bunnies (Chloe & Benedict) and two kittens (Maximus and Chelsea). They’re all so damn cute, but I’ve develped a bit of a crush on Benedict – how could I now with those glasses and bow tie and vest. They’re just the sweetest and they would make such an adorable prezzie for any little boy or girl, while also giving to those in need at the same time.

cuddle-and-kind

Cuddle + Kind sent us Everest and my daughter is in love. He’s officially her new bedtime buddy and has been every single night since he arrived. You can tell he’s been made with care and every detail has been carefully thought out, front and back, from his little scarf and knit hat, to his booties and perfectly yellow beak.

Cuddle + Kind is the brainchild of Canadian couple, Jennifer and Derek Woodgate, and their goal is to provide one million meals every year. To purchase a doll you can go here to order them via Indiegogo. You can also find Cuddle + Kind on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Crayola Colour Alive Giveaway #ColourAlive

11th May 2015

Crayola-logo

Crayola comes out with fun new products every year, so I’m sharing some of their Spring 2015 virtual products that are now available. First up are the Crayola Colour Alive products.

colour-alive
To use the Crayola Colour Alive books, you will need to download the free Colour Alive app on your tablet or smartphone. Colour Alive books work as a traditional colouring book – you begin by colouring the pages with the included markers. Then, you then scan the coloured page using the app and click the 4D button and up pops this virtual image of your coloured image.

colour-alive

You can then interact with the image, take a pic, share it and/or save it.

colour-alive

Colour Alive is available in the titles shown above, as well as Minions and Monster High.

Another fun product are the Virtual Design & Drive and My Virtual Fashion Show. These products each have their own free apps that are required – Crayola Design & Drive and Crayola My Virtual Fashion Show.

crayola-products

These products are a little different in that you use the included pencil crayons to design the outfit or car, from various angles, and then photograph each of the angles, and the app puts it all together. Below, you can see that my daughter coloured the front of the outfits for the fashion show on the left, and the final virtual product on the right. It’s actually very cool. She really enjoys playing with it.

My eight year old really enjoyed playing with the virtual Crayola products, and I think they’re a great, affordable option for birthday prezzies for friends, fun and quiet for road and/or air travel or for some afternoon fun.

Want to try them out for yourself? I’m giving away a Crayola Virtual Products Prize Pack (valued at approx. $65) that includes all six products featured in this post – Four Colour Alive books, Virtual Design & Drive and Virtual Fashion Show. Game On With Mattel #GameOn #AnytimeIsGameTime

14th November 2014

mattel-game-on I love a good board game.

As kids, we played board games all the time and I knew as a mom, that I wanted to share the fun of a great board game with my kids too.

As soon as they could play, we introduced board games to our children. Every birthday and every Christmas season, the kids would get a new one as a present.

We regularly play board games as a family as well, at least once a week. With electronics limited to just weekends, the kids will often be somewhere in the house playing a board game together….I just follow the sounds of fighting and/or laughter to find them.

When Mattel approached me about their Game On promotion, it was a no brainer. We love so many of Mattel’s board games – Apples to Apples and Blokus are on regular rotation, so the kids were excited about trying some new games.

image (4) A few days later, a big colourful box arrived (yes we still have the actual box – evidently the eight year old could not part with such a “colourful box for her stuffies”). We received four Mattel board games:

* UNO

* BIG PICTURE APPLES TO APPLES

* MAD GAB

* BOUNCE OFF

The kids immediately opened Bounce Off to try it out, and mass giggling ensued as did balls bouncing all over the place. Eventually they actually tried playing it according to the rules and had a great time. They’ve played it a few times since and each time they seem to get better at figuring out how to bounce the ball in order to actually get it into the grid.

They’ve also played UNO several times together – they easily figured out how to play and they love it. This one is a classic that anyone can play and have fun playing. This one travels well as well – great one to bring along on a trip.

However, if we had to choose one, our family would pick Apples to Apples hands down. We received the Big Picture version of the game for this promotion but we’ve owned Apples to Apples for years and it’s the game that makes us laugh non-stop every time. It’s so much fun and the kids and adults laugh hysterically. It’s the only game I know what is equally appealing to kids and adults. The Big Picture version finally allows younger kids to enjoy this great game – and it is fantastic. You can not go wrong with Apples to Apples as family entertainment – this one definitely needs to be part of your game night rotation.

mattel - board-games

With the holidays just around the corner, Mattel offers great gift ideas at great price points. All their games are really affordable, and can be purchased in Canada at Target, Walmart, ToysRUs, and Chapters/Indigo.

Would you like a chance to win a Mattel board game? Mattel believes that Anytime is Game Time, and to prove it, they’re holding a 24 hour contest every week for 25 weeks on their FB page. Make sure to follow their page and their Twitter account, so you don’t miss a chance to enter to win.

Mattel is also the maker of the very popular game Pictionary, and if you haven’t seen it yet, you must watch this video of the Pictionary Mall Surprise filmed at Sherway Gardens in Toronto – it’s so much fun. I would have loved to experience that first hand. It’s very cool – so watch it. I insist.

My 8yo is still trying to figure out how to get that giant bear stuffy in her bedroom. I think I’ll stop complaining about her regular sized stuffies now.

So go, play a board game because it doesn’t matter what time it is – ANYTIME IS GAME TIME.

*Disclaimer: I was sent board games for the purposes of this review, but my opinions are my own.*

Mega Bloks Barbie Toys

23rd December 2012

Hey last minute shoppers,

Are you looking for a gift for a little person who loves Barbie and loves to build things? Then these might do the trick.

Meg Bloks just released their new line of toys this month, featuring the ever popular Barbie. They’ve previously introduced lines with Hello Kitty, Smurfs and Skylanders, just to name a few. Yes, I’m naming what is all over my house right now.

My six year old LOVES the Hello Kitty line and she’s constantly playing with them and taking the sets apart and building her own creations. They really do amuse her for hours, so I knew the Barbie line would be a hit with her as well.

There are several Mega Bloks Barbie Build N’ Style sets available right now, with various price points, including:

The great thing about these sets is that they can be built and rebuilt a number of ways. Currently, my six year old’s Barbie sets are having a meeting of the minds with her Hello Kitty play sets, and her brother’s Halo set.

She also likes that the Barbie mini figures come with outfit options, and even hair accessories. Yes, some of these pieces are TINY and if you have normal sized hands or man hands (ahem, like me – I blame childbirth) then you may need to let the little ones take over with dressing the Barbies.

If you have a little fan who loves to build things AND loves Barbie, I think these would be a huge hit. The smaller sets would make a great stocking stuffer as well. They are geared to the 4+ age range and are available everywhere now!

Happy Holidays!

Cypher Kids Augmented Reality Cards #CBias #CypherKidsClub

19th November 2012

We’re big Apple fans in our house and the kids love finding new apps to play with and discover, especially on my beloved iPad.

So I jumped at the chance to review the Cypher Kids 3D Interactive Cards – Wild Animals Adventures. They work with a free downloadable app that works for the iPod touch (4th gen.), iPhone 4, 4S, 5 and the iPad 2 and 3. The cards are also available in a Numbers and Letters theme.

We personally decided to purchase and try the Wild Animals card set, because the six year old loves animals, and she’s the boss. I’ll admit that I knew nothing about these cards going in, so I was curious about their appeal and whether the kids would really enjoy them.

The package includes 18 full color cards, each showing a different animal. On the back of each card is a large 3D marker that can be read by the iPad’s camera.

To activate the cards, you open the Cypher Kids app, and you hold the 3D marker up to the camera and the animal on the card comes alive. The way you see the animals will depend on how you hold the card in front of the camera. Closer to camera, the animals will appear larger on the screen. You can also tilt the cards to see the animals at a different angle.

The cards can also be experienced in two different modes: Exploration and Snapshots. In Exploration, you can hear the narrator tell you all about the featured animal while you will also see the animal move and hear its sounds. In Snapshots, you are able to photograph the animal with a real life background.

My daughter loves this app (our bird Cookie – not a fan) and the cards that go with it. She just can’t get over the 3D aspect of them and loves to hear all about each animal. She may have said, “How do they do that Mommy?” many, many times while playing. It’s great to see she’s interested in an app that can also teach her about the animals she loves so much as well.

The #CypherKidsClub 3D Interactive Cards can be purchased at select Walmart stores. You can see photos of our shopping experience on Google+ as well. You can learn more about Cypher Kids Club via Twitter and Facebook.

I am a member of the Collective Bias™ Social Fabric® Community.  This shop has been compensated as part of a social shopper insights study for Collective Bias™ and  Cypher Kids Club #CBias #SocialFabric but as always my opinions are my own.

Fijit Friends – Review and Giveaway

12th December 2011

If you have a little girl, the odds are you’ve heard of the Fijit Friends toy.

Fijit Friends, by Mattel, are these sweet robotic toys that can interact with your child. It is programmed to react to certain sayings, and when uttered, the Fijit reacts by dancing, or singing, or even telling a joke.

There are four Fijit friends available right now – Serafina, Logan, Willa and Sage – and each has their own little personality. They recognize over 30 keywords and have over 150 phrases. They sing, they dance, they tell jokes and they will even fall asleep if you tell them to.

When we first opened up the Fijit, my five year old was excited to see it play out of demo mode. We sat together, so I could teach her what she had to say in order to get a response, since she wasn’t able to read every word on the card.  The Fijit comes with a Keyword Reference Card that tells you what to say to get the Fijit to dance, talk, etc.

The instructions also suggest that you speak clearly and about 30-60 cm from the Fijit, or you may not get the proper response. There were a few times where the five year old got a bit frustrated because her normal five year old lisp got in the way of being clearly understood. But she got over it pretty quickly.

Her favorite thing is when the Fijit dances – you can use your own music, or it plays its own music. It’s super cute, and it even spins around when it’s “getting down”.

The Fijit also has a “chirp” mode – this mode works by recognizing “sonic chirps” from other sources (currently found on fijitfriends.com and a future, not yet released app).

Check out what they can do in this video:

Fijits are available at ToysRUs, Target, Amazon, and many other retailers, but this time of year, it might be difficult to find one. Let me help you with that!

HOLIDAY – HEXBUG Review

12th December 2011

We have been HexBug fans in our house for years.

We discovered HexBug years ago, when Santa brought us an Original Hexbug – my son was around four and totally fascinated with it. I thought it was really cool, and a unique toy. I’m not a fan of bugs, but robotic ones have a ringing endorsement from me anytime!

Since we discovered the original, the company has expanded its product line with the Inchworm, Crab, Ant, Spider and Nano – all of which we own and gets major play in our house. The Hexbug Nano bugs also have several sets that allow you to create these huge habitats for hours of fun play (seriously, I’ve timed my kids – they’ve played quietly with their Hexbug toys for HOURS).

So, you can imagine how their heads exploded, when the lovely people of Hexbug sent them a huge box of all things Nano recently – they were ecstatic.

The kids were sent:

  • 1 HEXBUG Nano 5-Pack
  • 5 Glows in the Dark HEXBUG Nano bugs
  • 1 Glow in the Dark HEXBUG Nano Habitat Set
  • 1 HEXBUG Nano Spiral Starter Set
  • 1 HEXBUG Nano Bridge Battle Habitat Set
  • 1 HEXBUG Nano Elevation Habitat Set
  • 1 Carton of “Bug Food” (batteries)

The kids were so excited to play with all their new loot, so we opened the packages immediately and they got to work, creating the biggest habitat they could by using all their pieces. The great thing about these toys are both my kids LOVE them, despite their age difference. Even my five year old daughter enjoys putting the pieces together to create long tracks for the bugs to travel in. The pieces are easy to assemble and take apart and durable enough to not worry about breakage.

All the sets work seamlessly with one another, so you can purchase one to start with (all sets come with their own Hexbug Nano bug) and build from there. The glow in the dark sets are a newer addition, and we hadn’t experienced them before, but they work great. We exposed them to light up close, and turned off all the lights to enjoy watching the bugs glow. Just a fun add to an already cool toy.

Not surprisingly, Hexbug toys are award-winners – “2011 also marked the year that the Toy Industry Association recognized HEXBUG with the Specialty Toy of the Year Award, a further indication that HEXBUG had developed into a globally recognized brand with international popularity and demand from customers, mass retailers, and specialty shops in more than 25 countries worldwide.”

If you’re looking for a great gift idea this holiday season, Hexbugs are the way to go for sure. You can throw the individual bugs in stockings, or gift the special little people in your life with one of the great sets available.  They have many options at different price points, so you should definitely check Hexbug out when shopping for the kids in your life.

You can find Hexbug online here, on Twitter and on Facebook too.

**Right now you should head over to the Hexbug website to check out their 12 Days of Holiday Hexmas for a great deal every day, until the 16th.**

Disclaimer: I was sent the products mentioned above, for the purposes of a review, but my thoughts as always, are my own.
