How To Get The Most Out Of Your Dishwasher – CLOSED

4th June 2012

Thanks to Finish and their recent, informative webinar, I’m here to share some great tips on how to get the most out of your dishwasher.

  • Load the dishwasher properly – try not to nest your dishes together or utensils for example. This will prevent your dishes from being washed properly because the water won’t be able to reach every dish that way.
  • Make sure only dishwasher safe items are going in the dishwasher, and yes, stainless steel is dishwasher safe.
  • Before starting the dishwasher, turn on the faucet and wait until the water is very hot before pressing start – that way the dishwasher water will be hot as well.
  • Make sure to use fresh detergent and don’t store it under the sink if it’s a powder. The moisture will make the detergent clump together and will affect its effectiveness.
  • Make sure your detergent has both types of cleaning agents (enzymes and bleach) – gel cleaners only have one or the other.
  • The great thing about the Finish Quantum products is that it has both cleaning agents and is formulated to work well in both soft and hard water markets.

Martha Stewart Home Office Supplies with Avery

9th February 2012

I have to be honest with you right now.

I’m not sure who or what I love more – Martha Stewart or office supplies.

I’m not kidding – I LOVE office supplies and the cuter, nicer, more attractive – the BETTER.

So when I read on Twitter that Martha was coming out with her own line of office supplies,  I was immediately excited.

Martha, Martha, MARTHA!

Oh, Avery, whoever thought this up deserves a HUGE raise. I know, it was probably Martha.

I called and found out that my Staples stores was carrying the line! Right after school, I drove to Staples and walked quickly (RAN) to Martha’s section. Sadly, this is not an exaggeration – ask the children.

I bought a ton and if I could have, I would have bought one of everything. Their stuff is pure fabulous.

You need to check it out – if my Staples is any indication, it’s selling like crazy!

I’ve been twice already, just for this line.

Just go, you will LOVE it.

FYI: This puppy isn’t sponsored by anyone other than myself. Martha is worth it.

The Treasure Drawer

11th January 2012

We have many treasures (or “tweasures” as the five year old calls them) in our house.

Sadly, I’m not talking about jewellery.

I’m talking about those small kid toys you happen to find all over the house and never know what to do with.

With an eight year old and a five year old, we have accumulated a lot of stuff – a scary amount.

While the kids were still home on holiday break the first week of January, I went through every room of the house and cleaned, organized and purged like crazy. I was ruthless and we got rid of bags and bags of stuff.

It felt fantastic.

The kids were great and were willing to let go of some of their older toys to make room for new gifts they received.

However, for some reason, they always find it difficult to part with the smaller, random crap that they’ve collected – rocks, cards, plastic bugs, windup toys, and the list goes on and on.

So I came up with a solution – The TREASURE DRAWER!

Listen, this is as Martha as I get, so if you have to fake being impressed, feel free.

STEP ONE:

Find an empty drawer in your little culprit’s bedroom. Fill it with drawer storage/dividers/containers that will help keep the drawer somewhat organized.

STEP TWO:

After you force your kids to choose what they absolutely can’t part with, and you toss the broken stuff, put the treasures in the drawer.

TADA!!

Yes, you too can do this at home. And the beauty of it is that it allows for very easy cleanup.

Do you have a little girl with a million hair accessories and play jewellery? Well, then find yourself another empty drawer:

(Allow me to translate the 5 year old speak: joolry – jewellery, wawetts – wallets, hair stuffs – hair accessories)

My son also needed two drawers dedicated to his special things.

In his nightstand drawer, he keeps his special rocks, the coins his Daddy brings him from all his business trips from around the world and his watches.

I truly believe the best thing you can do when organizing is store things, like with like. That’s why this works for us – believe it or not, all of their small toys/items are now contained in these drawers. WIN!

In a future post I’ll show you their playroom, so you can see how I’ve been able to successfully organize all their toys, like with like, in an uncluttered way. And the extra bonus – they’re able to clean it up on their own, and it always looks the same, which makes me very happy.

Everything has it’s place – it’s a good thing.

(A good thing for Mommy’s sanity – clutter makes me itchy.)

Blue Sky Home Series – Review and Giveaway

26th August 2011

I was recently sent a package of Blue Sky Home Series products from Blue Sky, and being a huge fan of organizational things, I was super happy to receive them. This was actually the first time I had seen this line of products and I was immediately impressed.

I received a sampling of their available products including a grocery pad, door pads, a multi-task notebook, a mousepad and a weekly/monthly desk planner. I think they’re super cute, really well made and very useful. The multi-task notebook is a dream for list lovers, like myself. The grocery checklist is magnetic, and perfect for keeping track of what to pick up during the next grocery store stop. The door pads are going to be useful with the husband – he forgets everything!! Now I’ll be able to hang these cute reminders at the front door, so he can grab what he needs before he heads off to work. I also really like the planner, because it lays flat, looks pretty, and is laid out really well. Love that it has weekly and monthly calendars, space for lists, notes and more.

The Blue Sky Home Series offer organizational solutions for “busy moms with a fresh, contemporary design from designer Susy Jack Contemporary Paper. Blue Sky went directly to moms to learn real-life insights on how they manage their busy lives. They can be mixed and matched for portable planning, note taking, list making, communicating and storing paperwork.”

It’s also important to note that these products are all printed with soy-based ink on 50% recycled paper, and super affordable. The products range from $3.99 to $9.99 and can be purchased at Target stores and online at the Blue Sky website (blueskyimg.com).

Fresh Paint. Big Headache.

23rd August 2011

I have a big headache.

I’ve had it for DAYS.

I blame the husband.

He wields the paint.

At some point this summer, we came up with the brainiac idea to paint almost the entire house, and do some house renos. I’m not sure you know this but summers here are HOT and so damn humid it’s unbearable. It was a dumb idea, but we were hoping to have a freshy fresh house by the beginning of the school year.

This may have been a realistic goal, had we hired PROFESSIONALS. Instead, the husband decided he was Bob Vila and would do all the work himself.

First, he decided to renovate our very outdated bathroom – I will admit, it looks a million times better than it did. He changed the vanity light and mirror, replaced the toilet and sink, painted, added new accessories, yada yada.

The plumber that is coming tomorrow to “fix” the toilet? – TOTALLY coincidental.

Then Bob painted our front foyer and powder room (including walls, ceiling, trim and all doors). Yes this is the slowest progress EVER.

Bob JUST finished the family room. New lighting fixture, new paint on the walls, ceiling and trim.

Woo Bob. Woo for progress. (Woo – Translation: Hurry the hell up BOB!)

So three rooms painted, five to go.

Oh, and you should probably imagine furniture and stuff that is EVERYWHERE. Also, add the piles and piles that are accumulating after a massive purge that is soon to be a garage sale that is supposed to happen this weekend, but short of a miracle, is not going to happen. Like I said, we is smart.

I would post pictures, but I haz a headache.

I blame the paint.

But also mainly Bob.

MomAgenda – Review & Giveaway

25th July 2011

I LOVE a good agenda. Every year, I try to find a great one – one that’s cute, has monthly and weekly calendars, room for extras, and that actually fits my life as a mom. Every year, I buy a different brand, hoping it’s the one that’s going to become MY agenda for good, and every year no luck. But, I FINALLY found THE one.

The MyAgenda Desktop Planner by MomAgenda.

I recently received a MyAgenda Desk Planner to review, and it was pretty much love at first sight. This is a beautiful looking agenda, inside and out. I received the Graphite version, but it comes in six different colors and patterns (including zebra and giraffe). So, what’s so great about this planner?

  • It’s a 17 month calendar (from Aug 2011 to Dec 2012) that includes both monthly and weekly calendars.
  • The weekly calendars “feature four extra spaces per day” which I LOVE. I can use them to track my kids’ schedules, my husband’s travelling, workouts (yes I plan to start!) and my blogging scheduling. This is my favorite feature for me for sure.
  • So many extras, including room to record books, movies, expenses and more.
  • A MyEssentials section for phone numbers, medical info and birthdays.
  • Two lovely ribbon bookmarks to keep your place.
  • They are also FINALLY available for purchase in Canada, at Chapters stores and online!! A big WOOWOO to that!
For someone like myself who loves to put pen to paper, to stay organized with everything, this agenda is a dream!!

I’m excited to be able to giveaway a 2011-2012 MyAgenda planner ($43 value) to one of my readers!!

iQ The Smarter Cleaner – Review and Giveaway

    6th July 2011

I was recently asked to check out the iQ cleaning products line on my blog, and agreed because I had never heard of the product line and was intrigued by the concept. Also, with young kids, I’ve become so much more aware of the importance of using safer products, especially those involving cleaning.

I was sent the iQ Bathroom Cleaner, the All-Purpose Cleaner and the Glass Cleaner to try (the company also makes a Floor Cleaner). Right away, the difference between these products becomes clear. What arrived were three empty spray bottles and three refill cartridges. The products require you to fill the bottle to the fill line with regular tap water, insert a refill cartridge, then insert the sprayer (which releases the concentrate into the water) and a gentle shake. With that, you have a bottle of cleaner – it’s quite genius actually. It’s a very simple three step assembly that allows you to reuse the bottle, and simply replace the cartridge when the cleaner runs out.

So besides the obvious environmental advantages to this product (which creates a smaller carbon footprint), it is also non-toxic, and never tested on animals. Using ingredients such as corn and/or coconut derived surfactants, baking soda, sugar based acid, and water, the iQ line is very unique.

But do these products clean what they are supposed to? Yes, they do.  I tried them on my kitchen counters, bathroom counters, walls and the windows, and they worked very well. I really liked that they don’t have a strong scent/odor at all – that is something that really bothers me about products I have used regularly in the past. Personally, my favorite product was the Glass Cleaner – it is fantastic, and true to its word, absolutely streak free. I used very little product on my mirrors and windows and got fantastic results. Love.

I also really like the appearance of the product (yes that matters to me) and I like the idea of being able to downsize from tons and tons of bottles of cleaning products, to three or four.  The products are also very affordable and retail for $5.47 (for the bottle and cartridge) and $2.50 (for replacement cartridges).

    GIVEAWAY!

I’m giving away a prize pack that will include all three of the products I received plus a year’s supply of the refill cartridges for each (a $50 value).

Congratulations to my winner – #45 Mel Gallant – thanks to everyone who entered!!!!

Change Is Good. Pricey, But Good.

    1st June 2011

I’m tired, and slightly overwhelmed right now.

I’m in the process of planning a big purge, an even bigger garage sale, the painting of almost every room in our house, replacing some furniture, renovating our patio door and deck and buying new accessories, drapes, rugs and couches.

Um, can someone let my husband know that I’m planning all this? Oh wait, that’s why he’s holding on to his wallet for dear life.

Dear husband, I’ll make it easy on you – I’ll start small.

How about a much needed owl?

So cute, right? How about two?

I couldn’t help myself – love me an owl.

Um, DARLING, do you mind helping me carry a little something from the van?

Oopsie…. I bought something a little bigger than an owl.

Blame the owl – I needed somewhere to put it.

    A Brutal Couple of Weeks

    29th March 2011

The last couple of weeks have been BRUTAL.

We decided to replace the gross, dirty, old, kid-destroyed carpet in our family. We had high hopes, we saved for it, and in the end, all we got was a huge mess and a crappy looking floor. Major suckage.

Of course, as with any reno, there is now this mess of old furniture and stuff that has migrated to a couple of other rooms. It seems like no matter how hard I try, I just can’t get this place to look like the damn Pottery Barn catalogue. Totally depressing.

Then, the spouse is on his latest work trip  (3 weeks this time), and I’ve lost track but I think it’s the fourth trip in a row. Not a fan.

So, with everything going on with the house and being 24hrs/day mommy non-stop for weeks now, I of course, always come last.

So, I’ve fallen behind on the Ugi Fit after the initial first week. I’ll tell you something though – it is a hard workout, especially for someone who is just starting out (again). The plyometric type exercises are near impossible for me – I am out of shape after all. Because I’m finding it so difficult, I’ve decided that maybe supplementing it with walking on the treadmill, etc, will work better for me. For anyone who likes working out at home, and want something to add to their routine, Ugi Fit is a great choice.

Also, my kids made me watch Yogi Bear. TWICE.

    Not sure how I survived.
