When I first got pregnant, I got baby book happy. I bought tons of them, and read them religiously – especially when the kids were sick. They didn’t help all that much – I was still a nervous wreck. After the second baby, I didn’t use them as much and I assumed I was done with the parenting books. How naive.
I didn’t realize that things like nail biting and sibling fighting and back talk and refusing to brush their teeth would be things I would have to deal with so soon, if at all. But alas, I do. And evidently, it can only get worse as they get older. I already know – I will not survive the teen years.
Enter this fabulous book by Alyson Schafer called Ain’t Misbehavin’, which was offered to me to review. First off, although I’ve heard great things about Alyson Schafer and her books, I personally knew very little about what to expect from her latest book. So, I sat down and read it cover to cover. I loved it.
This is a fantastic parenting book, jammed with practical advice. It is sixteen chapters of incredibly useful information, ranging from sleeping and potty training to social skills and bad habits. What I really loved is the way the book is laid out, with each subject clearly outlined – first stating what the issue is, understanding the problem, and the solution. For example, “Won’t say please and thank you” in the Social Skills section was of interest to me – because I feel like I’m constantly prompting my kids to say please and thank you, and it’s draining. Alyson states that children’s resistance to saying please and thank you is the “child’s response to feeling pestered and that children seem to be held to a higher standard in this instance. The book then goes on to offer great solutions and tactical tips to improve the situation for everyone involved.
Alyson Schafer is a psychotherapist and parenting expert, who has also published Breaking the Good Mom Myth and Honey, I Wrecked the Kids, both of which I will be buying and reading. If you’re looking for a practical and extremely helpful book that can help you deal with so many different issues, this is a great one to choose.
