Family Movie Time Reboot #Streamteam

4th October 2016

We are official back to school and back to our fall routine, finally. I love summer and summer break but by the end of the summer, I am ready to be back to a more scheduled lifestyle. Mommy needs a break. Plus it’s cardigan weather and who doesn’t love a cardigan???

Over the summer we watched a ton of movies and shows with the kids whenever we wanted. During the school year however, we watch our movies mostly on the weekends. On Fridays, we have pizza and a movie night. We make homemade personal pizzas then choose/fight over which movie to watch.

(Side Note: Here is the yummiest, easiest personal pan pizza recipe ever. We use Naan bread as the crust, tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and then whatever toppings you want, from pepperoni to peppers, and then throw it in the oven at 350. The kids love making their own pizza, they cook super fast because you’re using Naan as the crust and they’re delicious and healthy). I’m a regular Martha Stewart.

Unless it’s a movie that was just released, Netflix is always our go-to for movie night. Thankfully, the kids are older now so they’re much more open to watching documentaries, and classics and John Hughes films. Honestly, re-watching great movies like Ferris Bueller or Mean Girls is so much more fun when you can watch it through your kids’ eyes. I don’t even feel THAT old when I do.

My favourite thing to do for movie night lately is something I did as a kid with my siblings. I move the coffee table out of the way, and make a huge bed on the floor, with several duvets and comforters and pillows. We turn out all the lights and grab some snacks and it’s officially movie time. It’s simple but the kids love it, which makes me love it too.

So what are some of the movies we’ve seen so far, that we really enjoyed?

  • Zootopia – LOVE it. It’s adorable and clever and really funny.
  • He Named Me Malala – Absolutely fantastic documentary. A must see.
  • The Little Prince – This is actually a new release and not on Netflix yet but it was so so good. We rented it and the kids watched it three times before the rental time ran out.
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens – A huge hit in our house for all of us.
  • Teen Titans Go! – Not a movie, but my kids are obsessed with this show.
  • I Am Big Bird – LOVE LOVE LOVE.

And some movies that are on the MUST SEE LIST coming up this month include:

  • The Breakfast Club – it’s time to share this movie gold with the tweens for sure.
  • Splash – Tom Hanks and a mermaid. Enough said.
  • Zoolander – This one is a maybe – I haven’t seen it so I’m not sure if it’s appropriate.
  • Coraline – Perfect for a Halloween re-watch – both kids think it’s totally freaky.

HAPPY MOVIE WATCHING!!

Back to School with SportChek And a Giveaway

20th September 2015

sportcheck-logoWe are officially back in school and already in the third week, with September quickly coming to an end. Yikes. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE the fall, but I HATE the winter, so slow down already.

I don’t know about you but I approached things differently with back to school this year. Instead of just going out and buying the kids a whole bunch of new clothes and things before school started, I picked up only the necessities like school supplies and indoor shoes, and figured I’d pick up the rest as needed.

I picked up a couple of pairs of shoes for each of the kids as well, but quickly realized the dude would require some really good running shoes for gym. Enter SportChek! They contacted me about checking out their site and picking out some shoes for the kids, which was very timely so I was so thankful about that.

I’ve been on the site before a few times for clothes, but never for kids’ shoes. Their selection is fantastic, ranging from running shoes and basketball shoes, to hiking and trendy options as well. They have a wide range of brands and price points, and often some great sales too – they have a 20% off sale on right now actually.

So what did we pick?  My son picked out athletic shoes: Nike LunarGlide 7 Kids’ Grade-School Running Shoes

And my daughter went for trendy and picked: Converse CT All Star Slip It Girls’ Trend Shoes

We placed our order and received our shoes a quick two days later! They were both great picks and the kids were thrilled with their choices. And personally, I just love being able to order online within Canada, and avoiding extra duties and taxes and exchange. SportChek has you covered from shoes, boots, athletic wear, sports equipment and even fitness/sports related electronics.

I’d love to give you a chance to do a little shopping online at SportChek as well, so I’m giving away a $50 gift certificate to one lucky winner! The giveaway is open to Canadian residents and will run until September 28, 2015. GOOD LUCK!

14th August 2015

mabels-labels-logo

On Monday, I blogged about Back to School and posted a giveaway involving school supplies. Today, it’s all about labels – MABEL’S LABELS.

I’ve blogged about Mabel’s several times in the past because they’re a company that I love to talk about and endorse. They offer a product that is dependable, pretty, affordable and 100% guaranteed. Their labels are dishwasher safe, microwave safe and waterproof, so they can be adhered to everything from clothing to school supplies, to rain boots, and everything in between. I adhere them at the beginning of each school year to the kids’ shoes and boots, their knapsacks, notebooks and pencil cases, their lunch paraphernalia and all their outerwear. And every end of school year, every single label is still attached. Worth every penny!

Back to School with Crayola And a Giveaway #BTS

11th August 2015

Crayola-logo

It’s that time of year again – Back to School! (Insert my children’s moaning and groaning here).

The BEST part about Back to School time for me, is buying all the school supplies. I find that the kids start to get excited about getting organized and ready for school when we pick up the school supplies – at least the little one does. Personally, I love it so much that I often buy too much so that I can hide some for myself. I make sure to pick up all the basics and some of the fun stuff too, and when it comes to the fun stuff, I always choose Crayola products. From the first package of crayons I bought as a new mom for my little guy, until now, with two kids who love to paint and draw and create, I have always preferred Crayola. It’s just one of those brands that people trust for quality, including myself – they call it the Crayola Difference.

This is why I was very excited to become part of the Crayola blogger program – me and the brood are big fans. Recently, they sent us a box of goodies for back to school, and we were super excited to check out all their new products and those products that are new to us. Our little eight year old artist got right to it immediately and picked her four favourite products – the Glitter markers, Metallic markers, Watercolour pencils and the scented PowerLines Markers.

First Day Of School – Grade Three & Senior Kindergarten

6th September 2011

Another first day of school under our belt today – they look so much older than last year. It was a happy and bittersweet day – missing summer vacation already.

My son started Grade Three today, and we had a few tears at drop off when he discovered some of his good friends were now in the other class. He’s really happy with his teacher, and frankly I call that a win. Hopefully, by the end of the week, we will have a happy seven year old. He’s super sensitive so I’m working hard to convince him that this is NOT the end of the world. I’m also really praying for a great year, with zero bullying bullshit to deal with. Yes I swore in a first day of school post – bullying will do that to a mom.

(rocking a classic case of bedhead – and yet still so cute)

My daughter who will be five this month, is now in Senior Kindergarten. This little girl takes everything in stride and although most of her last year friends have moved on to grade one, she’s still super excited about school.

I’m so proud of my little hyenas.

Wishing all of you and your kids a great school year!!

First Day of School – Grade Two and Junior Kindergarten

7th September 2010

The summer break is officially over. I am in denial. I can’t believe the school year has begun – where did the summer go???

Our proud six year old headed off to his first day of Grade Two today, looking totally adorable. He said he was excited about going back, to see all his “fwends” and to have fun outside with all the boys. Thankfully, he ended up having a great day and he’s really happy with his nice new teacher, so day one was definitely a win.

AND…..after much debate and waffling (on my part), we decided that our three year old was going to start Junior Kindergarten today after all. She was beyond thrilled and although it was just a one hour introduction to the classroom, and we were there with her the entire time, she had no problem leaving us behind to check things out, and have a little chat with her new teacher. I’m so glad that  she has the same teacher as my son did – I totally adore her. I actually affectionately refer to her as “Mary Poppins on steroids”. She’s good people.

I’m crossing my fingers there will be no crying on Friday, and by no crying, I mean me. I hope both kids are able to adapt and transition into the routine quickly and that I remember to Purel them from head to do every day after school.

How was the first day back for your little ones???

Mr. Grade One

1st September 2009

Today is the day I’ve been dreading a LONG time – my five year old is starting grade one. This means he is at school, full day, including lunch. He will be away from me everyday for 6.5 hours. I probably sound slightly pathetic, but I don’t really care. My little man will be away from my crazy grasp for SIX and a HALF hours everyday – ME NO LIKEY.

nikogradeone2

When we were driving to school – he said he was excited, but as we walked to the school grounds, he clung to me like crazy. He would not let go of my hand to even say hi to his little buddies that he hasn’t seen all summer. He met his new teacher, and stood in line waiting to go into his classroom with his new first day outfit, and it took everything in me not to burst into tears, while I watched him from afar. My little man, who changed my life in the most profound way, is experiencing his own new changes today, and I am blessed and proud and absolutely thrilled for him.

But I’m not going to lie, I may need to be heavily medicated the entire time he’s gone, so that I can play it cool when I pick him up. Dear Starbucks, prepare the latte IV – I am on my way.
