Rock of Ages – Movie Review & Giveaway

10th October 2012

Rock of Ages is just a FUN movie!

“In 1987 Los Angeles at the height of glam rock, infamous and outrageous rock star Stacee Jaxx performs at Hollywood’s legendary Bourbon Room club as it faces its final countdown. Meanwhile, an aspiring musician and a small town girl meet pursuing their dreams of music fame. The story unfolds through high energy dancing and heart-pounding hits of Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Journey, Foreigner, Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Whitesnake and more.”

I watched this with the husband who groaned the minute he realized it was a musical (ahem…I didn’t realize it was a musical before watching either). However, he watched the entire thing with me and I caught him singing along a few times too.

Reasons to Watch:

GREAT CAST: For the most part (sorry Julianne Hough & Catherine Zeta Jones – not a fan), I really like the cast. Mary J. Blige, Alec Baldwin (love him and yes he SINGS in this), Russel Brand, Malin Akerman and Paul Giammati were great.

– Tom Cruise transforms into this rock god and I was surprised that he was SO GOOD at it.

– For those who lived the 80s (not me because I am SO young – not really), the references from the clothes to the bad hair to the huge cell phones and cell phone carrying BAGS are hilarious. How could the 80s be so hideous and hilarious at the same time?

– The absolute best thing about this movie is the MUSIC. You cannot help but sing along to every song, and yes you will know all the words. It’s big haired, sweaty leather, karaoke – good times.

– There was actually a moment when one of the characters reminded me of Andrew Ridgeley and George Michael, and all I could think was, oh how I miss Wham. (We all miss Wham, no?)

So will this flick win an Oscar? Nope (most won’t actually) but it’s a fun rental. Yes it’s weird that Alec Baldwin sings in this movie, but then even weirder things happen (in this movie – no spoilers). Also, I now have a girl crush on Malin Akerman – wowza. And Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise) wears a studded codpiece that will make you pause the movie and get close to the screen to figure out what exactly you’re looking at. Yes, my husband asked me what the hell I was doing. “Research of course” was my answer.

Best Line of the Movie:

Sherrie: I’m a stripper at the Venus Club. Drew: I’m in a boy band. Sherrie: You win.

Watch it or not? WATCH it if you want to relive the 80s, sing some rock songs, and see Tom Cruise, his tight pants and his codpiece.

I have one Blu-ray Combo Pack for one lucky winner!! Just leave me a comment below telling me your favorite song from the 80s. If you’re too young to remember the 80s, I’m sorry but we can’t be friends.

Fiber 1 & Nature Valley Snacks – Giveaway – CLOSED

29th June 2012

I am a snacker.

I like something that isn’t a ton of calories but is filling and will keep my stomach from growling until the next meal comes along.

I had a chance to try some of these new snacks that  Fiber 1 and Nature Valley have just released:

  • Nature Valley Granola Thins – 90 calories and they come in chocolate and peanut butter flavours.
  • Fiber 1 Chocolate Caramel & Pretzel Chewy Bars – 100 calories (5 grams of fiber).
  • Fiber 1 Brownies  – 110 calories (5 grams of fiber) and come in chocolate peanut butter and chocolatey fudge flavours.
My favorite of the three were definitely the peanut butter Nature Valley Granola Thins. I love that the others have 5g of fiber because, fiber is your friend and if you want to snack on something chocolate, these will do the trick! Keep in mind that they are all a small portion but stay within 90-110 calories so they are a perfect size for a small snack.

Want to try them out yourself? Head over to the Life Made Delicious Facebook page right now and click to get your free coupon to print off, redeemable July 24th, 2012.

I am also offering someone the chance to win a Fiber 1 and Nature Valley Snack Kit, valued at $50. The kit includes one box of each of the snack I mention above plus this super cute weekender tote (my pic doesn’t do it justice)!

Please leave a comment below telling me which of the three snacks you would like to try!

A Day At The Toronto Zoo

6th June 2012

We recently were invited to spend the day at the Toronto Zoo.

We love the zoo so we were very happy to be there.

Along with seeing some of our favorite animals like the giraffes, the penguins and the new baby polar bear, we also had an up close experience with the rhinoceros and his trainer.

The five year old wasn’t happy that she couldn’t pet or feed the rhinoceros – I’m ok with that.

As the family got lost at the zoo, I also had the opportunity to learn about the “Hidden Zoo” which is the work the zoo does in conservation, preservation, research and education. Did you know that the Zoo participates in “captive breeding and re-introduction programs?” The Toronto Zoo is also the “only Canadian zoo with a reproductive physiologist on staff.” I didn’t know about either of these efforts. There is just so much that goes on behind the scenes, and it’s all funded through its patrons. I wish I lived closer because I would jump at the chance to get a Family membership – if your kids love animals and you live close enough to enjoy it often, you should consider a membership. A family membership starts at $121 for one year which is amazing.

Of course, we enjoyed more than just the animals – we also enjoyed a ride on the zoomobile, and the carousel, and our kids emptied their pockets at the gift shop.

And the kids and their dad LOVE the hands-on stingray exhibit. I like it too – from afar. Hence why I’m always the one with the camera.

Just call me snuffleupagus.

Disclaimer: We were treated to a day at the zoo, however my thoughts and my aversion to animal poop is my own.

Miracle Moms #MiracleMoms

15th May 2012

I am beyond honoured to be a Miracle Mom and a part of this wonderful campaign.

Over the next month, I will be posting additional posts that will introduce you to Parker and his family, and the wonderful children’s hospital in Halifax, IWK Health Care Foundation.

Parker is a 10 year old boy who was diagnosed with Leukemia in July 2010. He has made 70+ trips to IWK, and I’ll have a chance to get to know him a little better thanks to his mom, Brenda. I’ll be sharing more about Parker in my next #MiracleMoms post.

I will also be blogging about the IWK Health Care Foundation. The IWK is a “a tertiary care facility serving children, youth, and women in the Maritime region of Canada. The IWK Health Care Foundation inspires and celebrates giving to support excellence in specialized care for Maritime Families.”

Another aspect of this wonderful campaign is fundraising, and I have a personal goal to raise $1000 for the IWK Health Care Foundation. I can’t make this happen without your help and support. All contributions will benefit the IWK Foundation in Halifax through the Children’s Miracle Network. Please consider making a LARGE (ahem) contribution to this wonderful cause. I would appreciate anything you can donate towards my goal, and I would love to be able to surpass it!

You can go HERE to make a donation – any donation over $20 will come with a tax receipt. You can also click on the IWK Foundation badge on the right to donate.

You can also support me by passing on this post and/or by sharing my donation page via Twitter, Facebook and email. You can do this directly from the donation page as well.

You can find the IWK Health Centre on Twitter and Facebook.

You can find the Children’s Miracle Network on Twitter here and here, and Facebook.

You can follow the Miracle Moms campaign, by following the #MiracleMoms hashtag on Twitter.

Thanks so much for reading and supporting me as one of the #MiracleMoms – I appreciate it so much.

Weight Watchers Points Plus 2012 – The Program

21st March 2012

I just started back on the Weight Watchers, (my first week’s weigh-in will be posted tomorrow), because after waffling on what program to do, I’ve decided this is the one for me. Since I get so many visitors asking about Weight Watchers, I wanted to share a post with some details about the new Weight Watchers Points Plus 2012 program.

The Basics:

  • Based on your current weight, you get a daily PointsPlus target. This number will get smaller as your weight goes down.
  • Everything you eat and drink has a PointsPlus value.
  • You get 49 additionally points each week, which you can choose to use or not use.
  • You can earn more points every day by exercising. The weekly goal to start is to earn 14 points each week.
  • Track it all either on using their paper tracker or online (their online tools are not free, fyi).
  • You can choose to attend meetings for additional support (these are optional but highly encouraged).

Daily Food Goals:

As with any balanced diet, you need to aim for a certain number of servings of each food group – the paper trackers are great for keeping track of how many servings you’ve had.

  • Lean Protein: 2 servings a day – like 3oz of chicken or 1/2 cup of beans (Personally I eat more protein that that, especially if exercising).
  • Fruits and Veggies: 5 servings a day – 1 cup of lettuces of 1/2 cup of other veg.
  • Low Fat Dairy: 2 servings a day  (Serving sizes really depend on what you’re eating – for example, milk vs. yogurt vs. cottage cheese)
  • Whole Grains – They don’t really specify a total number of servings but
  • WaterAt least six glasses of water a day – They call it liquids and include milk and diet pop in that number, but I ignore all that and count water only. Milk really counts as dairy anyway.
  • Vitamin – They encourage a multivitamin daily.

  • Although you can technically eat whatever you want to eat on Weight Watchers (as long as you keep track of your points), they do really suggest that you stick with “Power Foods”. Power foods are basically the healthier options that any dietician will encourage you to eat – lean proteins, fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low fat dairy, etc. The best thing about the Power Foods is that they are more filling and use up less points, so it’s a win all around.
  • Prior to this updated Points Plus 2012 program, Weight Watchers stated that most fruits and vegetables carried a 0 point value – so technically you could eat as many as you want and they wouldn’t count. Obviously, this was flawed because fruits and vegetables still have calories, so you definitely have to keep track of them. Now, with Weight Watchers Points Plus 2012, they suggest that you eat about 5 servings of fruit and/or vegetable servings a day, which makes much more sense in the end. The starchier veggies like potatoes and corn do not have 0 point values however, so you have to remember that.
  • As anyone will tell you, exercise is key when you want to lose weight, and Weight Watchers is no exception.
  • You can earn points for working out (the number depends on  your weight, the amount of time you worked out and the intensity) – you get a chart when you sign up that will give you those amounts.
  • Your starting goal is 14 points earned each week.
  • Each activity point you earn equals one food point – so you can choose to eat those or not.

Pointers for success:

I know a lot of people on Weight Watchers, so I’ve read and heard some great advice for success and meeting weight loss goals. These aren’t rules or anything, just things that work for some people on the program.

  • Although you can technically eat whatever you want, eat healthy and mindfully so that you’re actually eating well and losing.
  • Make sure to eat your daily points in full every day.
  • Cut out white flours, sugar and salt as much as possible.
  • Drink water as your only beverage. If you feel bloated, add a slice of lemon to your water to help.
  • Don’t use the additional weekly 49 points regularly – only use them only on rare occasion when you have a party or event.
  • Do some sort of daily exercise.
  • Even when you do earn additional points from exercise, don’t use them.

Are you on Weight Watchers? What is your best advice for success? What do you do with your weekly points and earned activity points – save them or use them? Would love to hear about your weight loss is going.

(Please note: I don’t work for Weight Watchers – I’m just someone trying to lose weight gained from babies and burgers.)

Fijit Friends – Review and Giveaway

12th December 2011

If you have a little girl, the odds are you’ve heard of the Fijit Friends toy.

Fijit Friends, by Mattel, are these sweet robotic toys that can interact with your child. It is programmed to react to certain sayings, and when uttered, the Fijit reacts by dancing, or singing, or even telling a joke.

There are four Fijit friends available right now – Serafina, Logan, Willa and Sage – and each has their own little personality. They recognize over 30 keywords and have over 150 phrases. They sing, they dance, they tell jokes and they will even fall asleep if you tell them to.

When we first opened up the Fijit, my five year old was excited to see it play out of demo mode. We sat together, so I could teach her what she had to say in order to get a response, since she wasn’t able to read every word on the card.  The Fijit comes with a Keyword Reference Card that tells you what to say to get the Fijit to dance, talk, etc.

The instructions also suggest that you speak clearly and about 30-60 cm from the Fijit, or you may not get the proper response. There were a few times where the five year old got a bit frustrated because her normal five year old lisp got in the way of being clearly understood. But she got over it pretty quickly.

Her favorite thing is when the Fijit dances – you can use your own music, or it plays its own music. It’s super cute, and it even spins around when it’s “getting down”.

The Fijit also has a “chirp” mode – this mode works by recognizing “sonic chirps” from other sources (currently found on fijitfriends.com and a future, not yet released app).

Check out what they can do in this video:

Fijits are available at ToysRUs, Target, Amazon, and many other retailers, but this time of year, it might be difficult to find one. Let me help you with that!

BeanBagBoss bean bag chairs – Review

21st November 2011

I’m not sure if your kids are the same, but despite having ample seating in  every room in the house, they always seem to fight over where they will sit when they’re watching a movie or a show. They always want to sit in the exact same spot – it drives Mommy crazy.

Enter BeanBagBoss bean bag chairs.

I had a black bean bag chair many years ago – it was kind of hideous and a total eyesore. Let me tell you, the BeanBagBoss bean bag chairs are not like those old school bean bag chairs.

I received a BeanBagBoss chair for review and was very impressed from the minute I removed it from the box. First off, I LOVE the pattern I chose (Black City Scape) but it was the material that really surprised me. It’s actually made of 100% polyester (600 Denier Polyester Fabric), but it feels almost like a heavy canvas. It’s really well made, and will absolutely stand up to the rigors of children, thankfully. Super durable!

See – Look at the happy children!

Laid flat, it’s a very large (read: HUGE) square (4.5′ x 5′) but can be manipulated into several different positions (check out the video below!) My 5yo loves the “horsy” while the boy loves to stretch out on it while it’s flat. What’s great is they can both happily sit on it and without conflict. WOO! The chairs come in a ton of colors and patterns, but like I said, I’m really happy with mine. I haven’t had any issues with stains, but it can be just wiped down if you happen to spill something on it – it’s water resistant!

You can order these chairs online from either their U.S. or Canadian site and they are shipped via FEDEX.

They sell from $169.99 to $199.99 and right now they have free shipping!!

These would make a fab holiday present!

Now check out the video to see how versatile these bean bag chairs are:

Disclaimer: I was sent a chair for review, but my opinions are my own.

Zellers Festive Finale

4th November 2011

Zellers Canada is shutting its doors next year to make way for Target.

I have many, many memories of shopping at Zellers as a little kid with my Mom and siblings. There used to be a big location near my dad’s restaurant, and it was always part of our “loop” when walking around downtown. I can vividly remember shopping in the toy section, and then as I got older, shopping with my niece and nephew as well. I can still remember where everything was located in the store, even though it hasn’t been there for YEARS. Yes, I’m weird.

Although I am super excited about Target finally coming to Canada, I am sad about Zellers basically disappearing at the same time. It’s an emotional conundrum.

Since this holiday season will be their last, Zellers has decided to approach it differently. They are calling it their Festive Finale, and they are letting their customers run it. You can head to their Facebook page to:

  • set the sale prices of merchandise
  • pick the in-store music playlist
  • record and upload your own Zellers radio spots
  • have access to exclusive offers and deals only available to community members
Go check it out!! Now here are a few words from the Executive Managing Director of Zellers:

Dude has nice legs.

Disclaimer: This post was sponsored by Zellers, but I used my own brain to form sentences – because I am a genius.”

I’m a KINDER Mom #KinderMom

11th September 2011

It’s official – I’m a Kinder Mom. Mmmmm…..chocolate.

Kinder eggs have always been a part of our celebrations – hiding in Easter baskets, stuffed in Christmas stockings and even birthday loot bags. My little ones love to choose Kinder eggs when given the choice of a special sweet treat, and love the anticipation of the special little toy.

Personally, I can appreciate that Kinder eggs are made of high quality cocoa, real sugar and the classic visible milk lining (yes, they’re also peanut free!). This company has been around for over 30 years, and it’s time for a fab relaunch of Kinder Surprise in Canada. This August, they launched a new 2012 line of Kinder Surprise toys (over 70 brand new toys) – you can see them here. Included are inflatable toys, water toys and toys that are so big, you will be shocked they even fit in that egg at all.

We love a good toy at our house, and playtime is an everyday thing for sure, whether it’s during the week or the weekend. We absolutely make time for it, and the kids insist on it as well. We have game nights every week, which guarantees that all four family members will spend some fun time together. We’ve even converted our former tv/media room (sorry husband) to a play room to accommodate all the fun stuff for the little people in our lives. One of our favorite things right now is the basket of costumes and props that we dress up in and have fun with. I just love to see my kids using their imagination and having fun together, so I’m happy to encourage it as much as I can.

Make sure to go check out the Kinder website and find them on Facebook.

Disclosure: I’m part of the Kinder® Mom program and I receive compensation as part of my affiliation with this group. The opinions on this blog are my own.
