The Hip Hop Dance Experience – Review #UbiChamps #UbiHipHop

6th February 2013

Thank you to Ubisoft for sponsoring this post. Please visit Ubi.com to learn more about Ubisoft. I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective. #UbiChamps

If you love dance video games, than Hip Hop Dance Experience will not disappoint.

Hip Hop Dance Experience for the Kinect features 40 hip hop songs from old classics to recent chart toppers – there is something for everyone.

The game can be played alone or with a friend in several different modes:

  • Dance Party – Alone or with a friend, you choose a song and the level of difficulty.
  • Dance Battle – Two players will battle against each other to see who can dance better by performing their moves correctly.
  • Dance Marathon – A non-stop dance-a-thon for one.
  • Power Skooling – Here’s where you can ‘skool’ yourself  and practice all the dance moves at your own pace.
  • Wardrobe – This is where you can customize your avatar with outfit options.
The Hip Hop Dance Experience for the Kinect requires you to try to dance and mirror the dancer on the screen as closely as possible. The more moves you do accurately and in sync with the screen dancer, the more points you earn. The game offers hints as to what move is coming up in the form of the ‘next dance card’. It’s a great help especially if you’re just starting out with the game and not necessarily a hip hop dance star.
After each song, each player earns a score and some feedback on the dance moves  you need to improve. Each song has three levels: Newbie, Mack Skills and Go Hard.  So you pick the mode, then you pick your song and then you pick your level. Lots of options and lots of opportunity to improve.
I will say, I found this game much harder than Just Dance 4 and I think it’s definitely geared to older kids/adults. My 9 year old tried it out and also thought although it was fun to dance around and he really liked the music, it was too hard for him to follow along. This makes sense since the game is actually rated Teen (for lyrics, partial nudity, suggestive themes and use of alcohol and tobacco).
Personally, I really enjoyed it (at the Newbie level) and wanted to keep at it to try to get better at the dance moves. Lots of variety, great songs and really good Kinect-ability with the game. I wish it had the video playback like the Just Dance 4 game does, but it’s still a great game for those who love to dance.
The Hip Hop Dance Experience can be found at Amazon.com.

Poptropica Adventures – Review #UbiChamps #UbiPoptropica

31st January 2013

Thank you to Ubisoft for sponsoring this post. Please click here to learn more about Ubisoft. I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective. #UbiChamps

Poptropica actually originated as a very popular online game for kids that allows them play in a virtual world, safely. Kids create a character that can then play on different islands and solve mysteries that are often rooted in actual history. My kids have played it and love it so they were thrilled to find out that a new Poptropica video game for the Nintendo DS was released.

Poptropica for Nintendo DS begins the same way, with the player choosing their character and meeting the museum curator. The curator needs help to fix up the museum but to do that, the player needs to go through the four different islands – Museum island, Mythology island, Super Power island and Astroknights island – to collect artifacts for the museum.

You watch your character move through the game on the top screen, while the bottom has four different tabs. These four tabs hold the inventory that you find on the specific island that you are currently in, the outfits that have been unlocked, museum items that have been unlocked and a map to show you your location.

There is also the Customizer that allows you to change your character’s outfits  and find outfits throughout the game.

Both my son who is nine and my daughter who is six, LOVED this game. Because they had both played Poptropica online before, they were able to just jump in and start playing without any instruction at all.

Poptropica for the Nintendo DS is rated E for Everyone (with comic mischief). It can be purchased at Amazon.

You can check out the trailer for the game below!!

Rabbids Rumble – Review #UbiChamps #RabbidsR

31st January 2013

Thank you to Ubisoft for sponsoring this post. Please click here to learn more about Ubisoft. I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective. #UbiChamps

Rabbids Rumble is a fun Nintendo 3DS game that begins when 102 Rabbids are released into the game and throughout the DS, and the goal is to capture them all.  You can play the game in two different modes: Story mode allows you to play various mini games as a means to capture the Rabbids. There is also a Battle Mode, where you can play multiplayer games against a friend or against the DS itself.

The Rabbids themselves are very funny, weird characters that are super amusing, especially to my nine year old. He really enjoyed this game – this is his first experience with any of the Rabbids games – and it kept him amused for a very long time. I have to admit, that I was not good at this game at all, so I was happy to let him take over, despite feeling very OLD afterward. Personally, I think Rabbids Rumble is definitely geared towards a younger player – they love funny and weird and have a deep appreciation for bodily functions after all.

Rabbids Rumble 3DS is rated E10+ (for Crude humour, mild cartoon violence) and is available at Amazon and ToysRUs.

You can check out the official Rabbids Rumble 3DS trailer below!

Decompress & Relieve Stress with Gaming #FarCryGoldf

22nd January 2013

Thank you to Ubisoft for sponsoring this post. Please visit Amazon.com to get your own copy of Far Cry 3, today’s Gold Box Deal of the Day! I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective. All opinions are my own.

I think it is uber important to find something that you love to do and enjoy that also allows you to really relax and decompress from a hard day.

For some, this means painting, or reading (that’s me) or perhaps even running (still don’t understand this one). For many, their favorite way to relieve stress is gaming.

One of these many is my husband, (and my nine year old – it’s VERY stressful being tween evidently). My husband is a big fan of chilling at the end of the day by playing some XBOX – he says it takes his mind of work commitments and reduces on the remote battles. Truth be told, there aren’t that many remote battles, because I OWN the remote. Regardless, the husband enjoys mostly playing the war strategy type games, while the kids and I love having some great fun playing together while “improving” our dance moves. Although I personally am a big reader and opt to read to relax, I can understand why so many people turn to gaming to chill and take their minds off what is stressing them out.

So, are you a gamer? If so, today is a big day!

FAR CRY 3 is Amazon’s Gold Box Deal of the Day TODAY!

So what is Far Cry 3?

Far Cry 3 players step into the shoes of Jason Brody, a man alone at the edge of the world, stranded on a mysterious tropical island cut off from civilization. In this savage paradise where lawlessness and violence are the only sure thing, players will dictate when, where and how the events of the game unfold. Players will slash, sneak, detonate and shoot their way across the island in a world that has lost all sense of right and wrong. The island of Far Cry 3 will drop the player into a rich and stunningly well-realized environment, full of intriguing characters to meet, locations to explore and explosive fights to jump into. Alone on a tropical island, the player will have to confront the dark side of humanity. As Jason Brody, gamers will be impelled to act as he learns more about the horror and corruption that is taking place on the island. Far Cry 3 exists within a world of conceivable reality, where the events could have been ripped straight from the headlines of the news. The natural environment is a tool to be used for survival, improvising your attack or deception of the enemy. Gameplay will reflect the range of opportunities and variety only this type of environment could provide.

Clever Girls is also giving away 5 copies of Far Cry 3 TODAY January 22nd via Twitter to folks who RT the following:

Just Dance Disney Party #JDDisney #Ubichamp

13th December 2012

Thank you to Ubisoft for sponsoring this post. Please click here to learn more about Ubisoft. I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective. #UbiChamps

Recently I had the opportunity to review Just Dance 4 for the XBOX Kinect and the entire family was sold after the first dance. We just LOVE it so much, so the kids were excited to try out the “kid” version of Just Dance – Just Dance Disney Party.

Verdict: My kids LOVE Disney everything and they loved this version of Just Dance too. We’ve seen pretty much every Disney movie there is, so they were excited to recognize all the characters throughout the game and dance along.

The kids were able to easily navigate through Just Dance on their own which is great for those times when Mommy doesn’t want to boogie. There are three sections to the game – Just Create, Parents and Dance. Just Create is all about taking pictures and videos while dancing, Parents allows for parents to monitor progress and Dance is, you guessed it, all about Dancing. Just like with Just Dance 4, up to four people can play at once which makes it such a great game to enjoy with family or friends.

This version uses original music from many of the Disney movies and the shows from the Disney channel – my kids really liked that they were able to sing along to the songs while dancing. They included:

Classic Disney songs for the whole Family: Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Tangled, Lilo & Stitch , Tinker Bell, Enchanted, The Muppets, Bolt, Mary Poppins, and Aristocats. Dances from the hottest Disney Channel shows: Shake It Up, Phineas and Ferb, Jessie , Hannah Montana, A.N.T. Farm, Wizards of Waverly Place, Camp Rock, High School Musical and Good Luck Charlie.

The game also has an added fun feature that my son really enjoyed called Balloon Mode that allows the players to earn more points while they compete with one another. Other options include creating your own playlists and Non-Stop Shuffle Mode for when you need to dance non-stop! I had to ask the kids to shut down the game because they were totally into it and not interested in stopping anytime soon. It made them sweaty and giggly and happy – another reason this game is a definite win as a family/kid game in my book.

Just Dance Disney Party can be purchased at Amazon.com and ToysRUs.com

Just Dance 4 – Review #CleverJD4

22nd November 2012

Thank you to Ubisoft for sponsoring this post. Please click here to learn more about Ubisoft. I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective. #UbiChamps

The great thing about this time of year is the chance to spend time with family, eat too much and laugh at those who slowly pass out from carb overload. This year, however, I suggest you challenge your family members to some fun instead – it will rouse the sleepy. For those celebrating Thanksgiving this weekend, Just Dance 4 is the perfect way to add some fun (and exercise) to your celebration. You will dance, sweat and laugh like crazy – it is a guaranteed fun time.

I had the chance to review Ubisoft’s Just Dance 4 with my family and we absolutely LOVE it. The best thing about this game is that four people can play/dance at the same time – perfect for family get togethers and holidays!! Ahem, Thanksgiving.

My kids and I cannot stop playing – we are obsessed. The concept is simple – you mimic the dancer on the screen as closely as possible, and the better you are it, the more points (mojo) you earn. There are tons of song options which only increase the more you dance and the more points you earn, which then helps you increase your mojo. From Rick Astley, to One Direction, to Barry White, the choreography and music covers all genres. Once you fill the mojo bar, you move to the next stage and you earn gifts and unlock new songs and game modes.

One of my favorite parts of the game is that you have the option to “generate” a video after a dance, which is basically a short video of your dance moves. Yes, the Kinect records your moves and then speeds them up so you can watch the glory. My kids and I think these are really funny, although my eight year old is convinced he has a future as a dancer.

There is also a Just Sweat Mode – which is basically a dance workout that can last 10, 25 or 45 minutes in length. It will track the calories you burn as well. Definitely a fun way to work out and have some fun at the same time.

You also have the option to get online and join the Just Dance 4 community online. You can shop for new song downloads, keep up to date on Just Dance 4 news, and connect with friends and their stats as well.

Oh look, another cute video of my son dancing like a rock star:

If you haven’t realized yet – Just Dance 4 is crazy fun and worth every penny. I love this game, my eight and six year olds both love the game, so I insist you go out right now and buy it. You can find it at Amazon.

Funky Barn 3D Nintendo 3DS Game – Review

16th May 2012

Funky Barn 3D by Ubisoft is a “farm simulation game” that allows the player to set up an entire farm, while choosing which animals and equipment they would like to include. The game begins with a step-by-step walkthrough to get you started and familiarize yourself with the controls. It also makes suggestions throughout, to help guide you as you set up your farm. You can set up your farm on one of three lots, depending on the level of difficulty you want to play (easy, medium and hard). You can also play challenge scenarios, but those are only available once you’ve completed your first farm.

The game can be played in both 3D and 2D – but it is suggested that children younger than seven should avoid the 3D altogether. My son, who’s eight, tends to use 2D for all his games and enjoys it much better – he tends to experience the eye strain that 3D can create. The game can be fun and silly, but if your child doesn’t enjoy simulation games, then this one isn’t for them. You definitely need to be able to read to play this game, and I did find the controls required to move items and play, would be easier to manipulate by an older child. My five year old daughter who doesn’t have the patience for this type of game wasn’t interested in playing at all, while my son was willing to give it a go and has been playing it.

For me personally, I didn’t love this game – I found the interface a bit difficult to follow (perhaps I have giant fingers?) althought in fairness, simulation games are not my thing at all.

Funky Barn 3D is not an educational or learning game, so you need to keep that in mind if that’s what you’re looking for. However, it is rated E for everyone (with comic mischief).

Let me introduce you to the cutest, no need to clean up after him, my kind of dog, the digital dog – CUBE DOG!

I love my iPhone 4 for many reasons, one of which is the way it can easily amuse my four year old while I’m enjoying a latte with my girlfriend. I’m always looking for fun apps to add that will amuse her, and thanks to the Clever Girls, I’ve found my latest. Cube Dog!

Once you’ve finished creating your own dog, you can play with it, tickle it and even throw it a ball. And yes, even NINJA Cube Dog might show you his stuff.

One of the kids’ favorite moments was when they discovered you could get the Cube Dog to call with his very own iPhone. It’s beyond cute.

Another Fun option is to take pics with your Cube Dog. Oh, look my Cube Dog uses TweetDeck – what are the odds?

The Cube Dog app will work on the following: iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3rd generation, iPod Touch 4th generation and all require iOS 4.0 or higher. Heart of Haiti – Celebrating Mother’s Day

      29th April 2011

Mother’s Day is coming up next week, so it’s time to honour and celebrate all mothers, although personally, I think mothers should be honoured and celebrated every single day. There are many mothers in my life that are special to me, and one of those special people is my sweet friend, Lisa. I consider her one of my best friends, and I think she deserves a shout out. We are very much alike and yet completely different at the same time. She is annoyingly slim and fit and a total neat freak, and so am I  (on the inside, I swear). She laughs at my jokes, is a great listener, and even though she sucks at answering the phone, I still love her like a sister.

I was asked to write this post by the Clever Girls, on behalf of Heart of Haiti. I previously blogged about this fantastic organization here. Founded by Willa Shalit, Heart of Haiti works to promote and support artisans, and the people of Haiti, as they work to rebuild their communities following the devastating 2010 earthquake. This Mother’s Day, please consider gifting a lovely and unique item from the Heart of Haiti Collection. To see the entire Shop for a Better World/Heart Of Haiti collection (including newly added items for Spring), please visit the Macy’s shop here.

From May 3rd until May 8th, readers can use the special promo code CLEVERGIRLS to receive a 15% discount off Heart of Haiti and Rwanda Path to Peace products.

Please support this wonderful cause this Mother’s Day.

I was selected for this very special “CleverHaiti” opportunity by Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity. All opinions are my own.

      American Express’s “Small Business Saturday”

      23rd November 2010

Thanks to American Express for sponsoring my writing today about small businesses. American Express is presenting Small Business Saturday, a way to honor the local merchants who are the backbone of the economy, this Saturday, November 27. They’re offering statement credits to people who shop at small businesses, advertising for small-business owners, and donations to Girls Inc. for “Likes” of the Small Business Saturday page on Facebook. Join the celebration by clicking the “Like” button and then visiting the Facebook page to learn more about the program and read the terms and conditions that apply.

Small Business Saturday is this weekend, November 27th, 2010, and it’s a day to celebrate and encourage people to shop at small businesses. I can absolutely respect the hard work and devotion required to make a small business thrive. Coming from a family of entrepreneurs, I get it. I’ve met some wonderful small business owners online with my blog and through Twitter over the last year and a half, and I admire and respect all of them. The fact that I’m a bit of a shopaholic has nothing to do with it, although buying something unique and fresh is always a bonus. Grace Announcements is one of those unforgettable small businesses.

Grace Announcements is owned by Lindsay, a Canadian Mom who is extremely talented in both design and business. Her business makes a beautiful product, offers exceptional service and is really smart about using online media to its advantage. She offers invitations, announcements, stationary, labels, placements, and even wall art, and goes above and beyond to work with a client, and  to make the product truly unique for them.  But, the real secret behind the success of the business is Lindsay – she is lovely, and she truly believes in her business, and that is something I believe is shared among all truly successful small business owners.

So check out Grace Announcements online, on Twitter and on Facebook, and support her small business!!

Please support small business this holiday season!!

Please support Girls Inc. and learn more about American Express’s Small Business Saturday by liking and then visiting to the Facebook page!
