Smithsonian Design: The Definitive Visual History #awesomegifts

26th November 2015

smithsonian design book

Smithsonian Design: The Definitive Visual History lays out the complete evolution of design, from its origins in early cultures to the contemporary design – physical and digital – of today. This comprehensive volume covers every major design movement, along with the iconic designers and manufacturers who influenced everyday life through the objects and buildings they created.

If you’re a fan of design, you will absolutely love this book. Smithsonian Design is a gorgeous coffee table book that covers all aspects of design. It takes the reader through the evolution of design, from the Arts & Crafts period (1850-1920) to the Mid-Century Modern (1940-1959) to the Postmodern & Contemporary of the 80s and onward, and everything in between. At the back of the book, you’ll also find a glossary of design terms and a designer index.

Smithsonian Design is full of large, gorgeous photographs that complement the book beautifully. In each section, key dates are outlined and after a brief description of the era, specific pieces are highlighted, naming the designer and estimated date of the piece. There are also several pages that focus on the evolution of the design of specific items, such as chairs. This really gives you a great glimpse of how the design has changed over the last century.

If you’re looking for #awesomegifts this holiday season, this is a winner. I’m such a fan of DK Canada coffee table books – they’re always such a beautiful and quality read. They have something for everyone, so make sure to click on the #awesomegifts graphic below to take you to some other great gift ideas from DK Canada. You can find DK Smithsonian Design online at Indigo.

For The Love Of Lego – Book Review & Photo Contest

25th October 2012

I’ve blogged about my love affair with DK Canada and their fab titles many, many times. We own so many of their titles and it seems we can’t get enough.

My son adores their Lego books (especially their Lego Visual Dictionary books) and we tend to run out  and buy them the minute a new one is released.

DK Canada sent us their latest visual dictionary – Lego Batman Visual Dictionary DC Universe Super Heroes and it did not disappoint my eight year old son.

Of course Batman and super heroes are very cool right now, and with a new Batman Lego toy line out as well, this book is seriously popular.

The book features all the Lego Batman sets, from those first released in 2006 to those currently available in stores. Also included, behind the scenes of how the Lego is created, info on the Lego Batman video games and a great two page spread of all the minifigures of every character in the series. It comes with an exclusive minifigure (as do all the Lego Visual Dictionary books) which my son says is “very super cool.”

There are so many DK Canada Lego titles – you can also get Lego books for your Harry Potter, Ninjago and Star Wars fans as well. If your little person loves Lego, they will absolutely enjoy these books. They make a great gift!

Right now, DK Canada is celebrating Lego with a fab For The Love Of Lego Photo Contest. They want to see what your child (aged 14 and under) can create with Lego! Take a picture and submit it by October 31, 2012 by 6 p.m. EST to enter. All entries will be judged by Canadian LEGO Fan Builder extraordinaire Deborah Higdon (featured in the LEGO Ideas Book).

Send a photo of your LEGO creation (you can more than once with different creations) to general@tourmaline.ca, with the subject For the Love of LEGO in your email. They must be jpgs and no larger than 5 mb. One lucky winner will win a DK LEGO Book collection worth over $200! Woo!!

You can see the submissions online on at cn.dk.com/legopix, on their Facebook page and their Twitter feed @DKCanada.

May The Fourth Be With You 2012 – DK Canada

4th May 2012

I know I’ve mentioned this on my blog before but as a family, we love Star Wars.

We dress up, we take pics, we make movies – it amuses us greatly.

We also have a TON of Star Wars books, because my eight year old son loves them.

I LOVE DK Canada because they have the BEST selection of Star Wars books available.

I wrote about their May the Fourth promotion last year as well, to support DK Canada and they raised hundreds of dollars for Frontier College’s literacy programs in Canada. WIN.

This year, DK Canada is working with Indigo and Chapters bookstores to bring the May the Fourth fun to their retail stores. A portion of the proceeds of all DK Star Wars books sold over this coming  May 4th weekend (May 4,5,6) at all Chapters and Indigo stores nationwide, will be donated to Indigo’s Love of Reading program (which has already raised over $10 million dollars for Canadian schools in need). The more books sold, the more money will go to help put books in schools for kids to read. To celebrate, select Indigo and Chapters stores will have special May the 4th Star Wars themed celebrations, so please go to your local Indigo or Chapters and help support the Love of Reading program and have some Star Wars fun today!!

If you need some help picking out a great DK Canada Star Wars title, you might want to check out the Star Wars The Complete Visual Dictionary!

This fab book features all of the characters from the entire Star Wars saga – so all six movies are included. Over 250 pages of amazing diagrams, costume details, creatures, and equipment and weapons are all in there. The book is full of gorgeous photos and cool facts that have kept my son amused for hours. This book is a great addition to his Star Wars book collection – it retails for $45 but right now, there is a great 30% off sale on the DK Canada site on all the Star Wars titles!
Also, DK Canada is having their May the 4th Be With You Photo Contest again this year!! Take a photo of you, your kids or friends enjoying a Star Wars book, enter the contest and you could win big! The winner will win a DK Canada Star Wars Collection worth over $200 and a full set of Star Wars DK Readers will be donated to a Canadian school or library of your choice!

Seriously, it’s A GREAT CONTEST!

Don’t forget to enter!!

“Do or do not. There is no try.”  Yoda is way smart. Listen to him, enter and go out and support a great cause like the Love of Reading program!

Have a great day!

DK Canada – What Did You Make On March Break Contest

23rd March 2012

I know I’ve said this before on past DK Canada reviews that I’ve done, but I LOVE DK Canada. I love the variety of their book titles – so many really cool, educational books for everyone in the family. DK Canada online always has something going on, from fun promos and great sales to unique contests with great prizes. Currently, they have two contests running:

Sign up for their DK Canada newsletter (yup, that’s it!) and you’re entered to win a $150 March Break Survival prize pack (ends April 16th, 2012).

And another that ends very soon:

The What Did You Make on March Break contest is on RIGHT NOW, but ends March 31, 2012, so you have to act fast. You could win a collection of autographed Jane Bull craft books AND a $150 DK Canada Shopping spree!! To enter, parents are asked to send a pic of their child’s creations (for ages 3-14). At the end of the month, Jane Bull will judge the pics and choose a winner. All the deets to enter are here.

DK Canada sent me a Jane Bull book – Made by Me to review over the March Break (I’m a little behind, sorry!)

My daughter immediately took Made by Me hostage and would not share it at all. She stared at it for hours, and read as much as she could on her own. For that alone, this book is a WINNER.

Made by Me is a “stitch-by-stitch guide to knitting, sewing and embroidery.” There are several crafts to make within each category, and each craft has a dedicated page or two with tons of pics to help you along. If you or someone you know enjoys crafting and is looking for a beginner book to share with their kids, Made by Me by Jane Bull is a great choice!

Book: Hardcover | 64 pages | ISBN 9780756651633 | 28 Apr 2009 | geared to 7 – 11 years ($16.99, but on sale for $11.89)

Don’t miss out!! Go enter the What Did You Make On March Break contest before the end of the month!!

Disclaimer: I was sent the book for the purposes of review, but my words are my own.

27th November 2011

I LOVE DK Canada books. They have a great selection for the entire family – from beautiful coffee table books to unique educational books, they’ve got it all. My son especially loves all their Star Wars and Lego titles. I also really enjoy their titles that can teach the kids about new cultures and history, animals and science in a fun, colorful way.

I thought I would share some of my favorite titles. Make sure to check them out online if you’re doing some Holiday shopping – right now they have 30% off many titles for a limited time!!

(If you have a Star Wars fan at home, there are TONS of Star Wars books on the DK Canada site that would make great gifts!)

Lego fans will LOVE all the DK Canada Lego titles – my son ADORES these, and loves the latest title The Lego Ideas.

Again, MANY of these titles are currently on sale on the DK Canada site for 30% and there is free shipping right now for purchases over $50!! So make sure you check them out for the book lovers in your life!!

Disclaimer: I was not sponsored to write this post – I just love books, and happily share the love.

May the Fourth Be With You!

4th May 2011

Star Wars is HUGE at our house – HUGE! Nothing has thrilled my husband more than being able to watch the entire Star Wars series with our seven year old. We’re big fans of dressing up and posing for some fun pics too, and the kids and their dad are constantly reenacting scenes from the movies. Even the four year old can name most of the characters – we’re very proud.

So of course I said yes when DK Canada asked me to be a part of their May the Fourth Be With You event. Each of the bloggers involved in this event are reviewing a different Star Wars title – my choice was Star Wars Complete Cross-Sections – The Spacecraft and Vehicles of the ENTIRE Star Wars saga. As my seven year old said, after staring at it for a really long time, “This is a really cool book!”  He’s absolutely right. Star Wars Complete Cross-Sections includes every major vehicle (more than 50) from all six Star Wars movies. Each of the illustrations are full colour, huge and incredibly detailed. I wasn’t surprised to read that in creating this book, DK was “given access to exclusive photos and blueprints, original scale models, and preproduction sketches from the Lucasfilm Archives at Skywalker Ranch.”

Written by David West Reynolds and Curtis Saxton, and illustrated by Hans Jenssen and Richard Chasemore, Star Wars Complete Cross-Sections is a perfect and unique book for any Star Wars fan. “Every picture is awesome” and “one of my favorites, Mommy!”  It is an absolute winner! It retails for $40.00 Cdn ($35 U.S.).

DK Canada is launching a really fun contest today – Canadians are invited to send in photographs of themselves, their friends and/or family reading Star Wars books! For every photo that is submitted, DK Publishing will donate a “toonie” to Frontier College. One of the photos will be selected as a winning image, with the entrant receiving a complete DK Star Wars library (valued at $400). Also, a donation of a complete DK Readers Star Wars collection (29 books) will be made to the Canadian school or library of the winners choice!

This contest will run from May 4th to May 31st! Please go here to enter this fantastic contest!

DK Canada Cookbooks – Review and Giveaway

2nd March 2011

DK Canada recently sent me some fantastic cookbooks to check out, and knowing that I am a cookbook fiend, I was happy to oblige.

The Cook’s Book – Techniques and tips from the world’s master chefs is a glorious and HUGE (600+ pages) cookbook that is fantastic for new and curious cooks alike. With contributions from chefs like Charlie Trotter and Rick Bayless, this book is a fantastic guide to help the reader become a better cook at home. The cookbook thoroughly explains various cooking techniques, for every section of the cookbook, which I really like since I’m no Martha. I also LOVE that each recipe has it’s own series of photographs that walk you through the recipe and a photo of the final product as well.  “Taking inspiration from hundreds of recipes, including many of the contributing chefs’ signature dishes, you will develop, improve and hone your culinary skills.” This one is a definite winner.

First off, anything with easy in the title gets my attention. This is a six book series that includes,

  • Cheap Eats
  • Freeze Ahead Meals
  • 30 Minute Dinners
  • One-Pot
  • Cakes and Cupcakes
  • Chicken

Each of these books contain 90 simple-to-follow recipes, with a dedicated photo and symbols that explain servings, nutritional info, special equipment and even freezing instructions. With sections that outline useful techniques, and recipe planners, these cookbooks are perfect for the family cook.

One lucky winner is going to win the complete 6 book set of Everyday Easy cookbooks!!!
