The Last Man On Earth Season One – Review and Giveaway

28th September 2015

The Last Man on Earth is a hilarious and critically acclaimed series starring the adorably weird Will Forte as Phil Miller. The show is set in the year 2020 after a virus has killed off the entire population, with only one survivor: Phil. Phil drives across country looking for survivors but when he finds no one, he heads back to his hometown of Tucson, Arizona. Some of my favourite moments come from watching Phil amuse himself as the last living man, from drawing faces on all these different balls so he can have a some company at the local bar, to moving into the mansion of his choice and filling it with priceless art and artifacts.

I’ll admit that when I first heard about the concept of this show, I had no idea how they could possibly pull of a show with one character. Of course the answer is they don’t, because we soon learn that there is in fact another person who is alive in Tucson and her name is Carol. Carol, played by Kristen Schaal, is the queen of playing funny, quirky characters and she doesn’t disappoint. She’s perfectly cast as the ‘last woman on earth’ who’s determined to correct Phil’s grammar and his ways.

This is a great show – it’s funny and creative, and really allows its cast to shine. I adore Will Forte and I can’t imagine anyone else that could be more perfect in this role. The Last Man on Earth Season One has been nominated for four Emmy Awards including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, and is now out on DVD.

The Hobbit – Movie Review & Giveaway

26th March 2013

When The Hobbit was first announced, my husband was VERY excited about seeing it. He’s a huge Tolkien fan and was thrilled that he would also be able to introduce both The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit to our son. So, it makes sense that I would let the men take over and give you their review of The Hobbit, which they both enjoyed very much. Keep in mind, the husband is of the ‘artsy fartsy’ variety when you read his thoughts:

I discovered Tolkien when I was 10. I remember spending hours on the couch reading The Hobbit, surrounded by orange shag carpet and olive green fixtures that seemingly transformed themselves into deep valleys in Rivendell. In my early teens, The Lord of the Rings became the prelude to countless hours of Dungeons and Dragons. This was a time my friends and me created mythical worlds. Worlds where caverns and trolls came to life and gold glittered under Smoky mountains.

With the release of Jackson’s movie, The Hobbit, An Unexpected Journey, I knew this was the right time to introduce my nine-year-old son to Tolkien’s literary world, and to Jackson’s massive movie experience. I’ll let my son speak for himself, except to say, I was happy we shared this experience together.

While the movie had a Lord of the Rings undertone, it still delivers in awe. The movie feels like a fable, and draws upon Tolkien’s work with some creative license. While some hard core fans were disappointed with the film’s artistic license, I felt the movie stayed true to Tolkien’s playful nature. The film was engaging, exciting, and above all – entertaining. And isn’t that what we expect from a night out at the movies?

And the best part is – I got to introduce my son to new imaginary worlds – and to Tolkien.

And the 9yo’s thoughts:

I saw The Hobbit with my dad and this is what I thought about it. I think it was a really cool movie. I like that it starts out like Lord of the Rings and it shows Frodo and Bilbo Baggins (when he’s old), when Bilbo tells Frodo a story. The movie is really funny too – like when all the dwarfs went into Bilbo Baggins’ house and sang a funny song. Animation is another thing that is cool, for example Golem is animated really cool.

We clearly have The Hobbit fans in this house, so it’s only fair that I share it with you too. I’ve got a Blu-Ray/DVD copy of The Hobbit to give away to one lucky winner!
