Canadian Online Shopping with Shop.ca #ReInventTheMall

21st November 2014

I have a little problem.

Let me rephrase that – my spouse thinks I have a little problem.

A shopping problem.

Personally, I don’t think it’s a problem because it’s relaxing and enjoyable.

It’s even more enjoyable, for me anyway, during the holidays because it’s a unavoidable necessity. I HAVE to shop.

I come from a huge family and have many nieces and nephews, and siblings, and parents, and of course my two little hyenas and the husband and a friends to shop for, so it unfortunately gets pricey pretty quickly.

I try to do as much of my holiday shopping online as possible, because there are so many more options than I can find in the small city that I live in.

This is why I really like Shop.ca.

The best thing about it for me is that it’s Canadian (I. Am. Canadian), so I can avoid duties and taxes and crazy surcharges and shipping, that is always the case when shopping on U.S. sites. There’s nothing I hate more than finding a great gift online for a great price and then having to let it go because the shipping is outrageous. With Shop.ca, shipping is FREE!!! Plus, I’m all for supporting great Canadian business.

I’ve been looking for presents for my 10 year old son who loves hockey and just by searching NHL on the site, I found over 2,300 results including autographed photos which of course, are on his birthday and Christmas lists this year. Success!! The site is super easy to navigate, not cluttered which makes a big difference in my opinion, and full of great products. If money was no object (where my money tree at?), I could do some serious damage.

I’m looking at you Nespresso machines. For starters.

If you have an Aeroplan account, you can earn 5X the miles on the site as well, which you can then redeem for things like Shop.ca gift cards. Double win! If you’re on Twitter and/or Facebook, definitely make sure to follow Shop.Ca because they’ve got great gift ideas posted and they’ll even help you find the perfect gift just by tweeting with the hashtag #ReInventTheMall. You’ll also find a helpful shopping guide on their site for all the lovely people in your life.

Happy Shopping!! Feel free to email me for my Christmas list. #Kidding #NotKidding

Holiday Gift Ideas – Music

6th December 2012

Confession: I’m that person that drives by you in the middle of the day with music blaring, base pumping….in a minivan.

Yes, I am very cool.

I can’t help it – the louder it is the more it drowns out the children. I mean, loud music makes me happy.

So with that, how about some gift ideas for the music lovers in your life.

For Holiday Music Lovers:

Eleanor McCain – Holiday

Eleanor McCain is a Canadian singer with a lovely, angelic voice. Her latest album celebrates the holidays with 19 traditional songs, some up-tempo and some more intimate. This is a perfect cd for the season!

For Your Tween:

One DirectionTake Me Home

These boys are adorable and their songs are so fun and poppy and the kids love them. Their new cd, Take Me Home, is on my kids’ list this year.

For Your Best Girlfriend:

Mumford & SonsBabel

I love Mumford & Sons – this cd is guaranteed to be a hit with anyone you gift it to, including your bestie.

For Classical Music Fans:

Jonathan & Charlotte – Together

If you have spent anytime online you will recognize Jonathan & Charlotte from their audition video from Britain’s Got Talent on YouTube (it received over 26 million hits). Although they came second, they got a recording contract with Simon Cowell and their new CD has been released. It is just fantastic!!

For Fifty Shades Fans:

Fifty Shades of Grey: The Classical Album

Did you read these books? I’m pretty sure everyone and their mother read these books. If you did, you may remember the many classical music references and if you thought, oh how I wish these were all compiled into a dvd for my listening pleasure, you have been heard!

For Those Who Like To Boogie

Kesha – Warrior, Rihanna – Unapologetic, Green Day – Tre!

To continue the holiday spirit of giving, I’m giving away FIVE copies of Eleanor McCain’s Holiday CDs!!

Eleanor McCain is “a classical crossover artist. My song choices draw from classical, celtic, folk, pop and jazz genres – My hope is that the experience is intimate, poignant and filled with an emotion that is genuine and wonderfully human.” Eleanor has four CDs available for purchase which you can find here, and right now, with every Eleanor McCain CD purchased online, Eleanor will donate 10% to Hospice Toronto.

Toshiba Thrive Tablet – Review and Giveaway – CLOSED

23rd November 2011

Ho Ho Ho  – it’s that time of year where giving things away warms my cockles. So when given the opportunity to review and give away a 10″ Toshiba Thrive tablet from Toshiba Canada, I jumped at the chance. Personally I was also very excited to check it out because I’ve been dreaming about a tablet for a while now. (Thanks Santa – Santa being Toshiba Canada)

So let’s get some of the basics out of the way:

  • Thrive has a 10.1” diagonal high-res multi-touch LED backlit display
  • It has full size ports – one USB port, an HDMI output, a mini-USB port, an SD memory card slot and a standard 3.5mm headphone jack.
  • It has a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and onboard flash memory in 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB.
  • It has a 2-megapixel front-facing camera and a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera.
  • It is priced competitively at $379 for the 8GB model, $399 for 16GB and $479 for 32GB.
So what did I think of the Thrive? For me there were several things to love about this tablet:
  • I enjoyed the size of the display.
  • Love the addition of all the useful ports. It was easy to connect it to our television to watch a movie  and  also download my documents to it.
  • I really liked the textured back of the tablet and also that you can switch it out for a different colored back (five colors available at $20 each).
  • It is really fast – downloading apps was lightning quick as were using the apps themselves.
  • I liked the look and reactiveness of the touchscreen.
  • Lots of great apps included with the tablet and many available for download (most of the greats were free too).
  • Great battery power (I got on average 8 hours on a single charge) and love the completely removable battery.
  • Great very affordable priced tablet.
Things that I didn’t totally love about the Thrive:
  • It’s a bit heavy – heavier than most of the tablets out there (weighs 1.66 lbs) but I liked that it felt sturdy and not so fragile that letting my kids play with it, would make me nervous.
  • The camera didn’t take great pics (they seemed blurry and unclear). Also, when in landscape mode, because of where the camera is located, I accidentally covered the camera with my fingers almost every time. I found myself cleaning the smudges off of it constantly.
Of course there is tons more info about the Thrive here on the Toshiba Canada website, so make sure to check that out as well.

Thanks so much to Toshiba CanadaI have ONE Toshiba 10″ Thrive Tablet to give away to one lucky winner!

Leave a comment below telling me, if you win the Toshiba Thrive tablet, will you keep it for yourself or gift it to someone on your holiday list?

HOLIDAY – Chapters Indigo

20th November 2011

I LOVE Chapters.

I spend an obscene amount of time there. Being someone that LOVES books, I can’t help myself.

The kids are obsessed with the new Children’s section, which I try to avoid as much as possible because it empties my wallet.

And then the gift section in our location got overhauled, and it is beyond fabulous.

I love everything in their home section. I may or may not go there often and stare at the pretty things.

They’ve also just brought in tons of new items, just in time for your holiday shopping. I thought I would share some of my favorite gift ideas with you!!

  • Glass Carafe – $22.50
  • Cheese Knife Set – $29.99
  • Retro Milk Bottle Cream & Sugar Set – $9.50

  •  Wine Monkey – $12.00
  • Zuny Beaver – (Couldn’t find it online but too cute not to include)
  • White Owl Ornament – $12.50
  • Owl Candle – $12.50

Will you be shopping at Chapters during the holidays? Can I forward you my list?
Disclaimer: This post is not sponsored. It’s just one more way to put my husband on the right track during his Christmas shopping.

Empire Theatres – Give & Get Program

14th December 2010

Less than two week to go until Christmas, and I am VERY behind on my shopping. I have many, many, many gifts still to buy. What’s my plan of attack?

  • Make a list of who I have to buy for (why yes, this list is obscenely long – I have a very BIG family)
  • Write down ideas of what I want to buy for each person and the budget
  • Have an envelope of CASH for each person, so I know what I’ve spent and what I have left (yup – we pay cash for everything – that way we avoid the frightening Mastercard bill in January)
  • Pick up things as I see them (especially if they’re on sale) and mark them off the old list
  • Try very hard not to buy myself a little something, here and there
  • Eventually, it all gets bought, and wrapped and gifted (sounds very calm – it is anything but!)

Through MomCentral Canada, I heard about the Give & Get Program from Empire theatres, and I think it’s great! What’s the program?

  • When you purchase $30 in Empire Theatres’ Gift Cards you’ll receive $30 in Empire Theatres Coupons (I think the coupons could actually be a great stocking stuffers too!)
  • These can be purchased at the theatre and online!
  • The promotion ends FRIDAY, DECEMBER 24TH
  • The coupons will be valid in 2011, and each one will be valid for one month period.
  • Full details on the contents can be found here

Legal regarding the Promotion: • Approximate retail value – refers to the $30 value in Empire Coupons,  Offer expires on December 24th, 2010, While quantities last.

Disclosure – I am participating in the Empire ‘Give & Get’ program by Mom Central on behalf of Empire Theatres. I received an Empire gift card and coupon bundle as a thank you for my participation. The opinions on this blog are my own.
