Martha Stewart Home Office Products With Avery

12th April 2013

It’s no secret that I love Martha.

When I found out about the Martha Stewart Home Office product line with Staples I was beyond excited. I was there on the first day, buying it all up  – fantastic, practical items in classic Martha colors.

Well, Martha is now back with new some new additions and they are fabulous!

Martha now has an entire line of cute totes and wristlets which are great for work or travel. The line carries cases and sleeves for your laptops and tablets too, all in gorgeous colors and great price points.

Love, love, love the new Martha Stewart Wall Manager System – great for the kitchen or the office. You can incorporate different pieces and create the setup that works for you.  Available are various boards like bulletin boards and white boards, as well as drawers & shelves and accessories to make it your own.

The Discbound Notebooks are my favorite new product and I had the chance to review one for myself. They are really nice quality with a textured feel to the notebook. I love the classic Martha Stewart blue colors – it’s really pretty. On the inside, you’ll find room for business cards, a pen holder and an elastic band closure to keep everything together.

The notebooks comes with 60 sheets of narrow-ruled paper and a clear storage pocket but you can buy additional pieces to make the notebook work best for you. Additional options include filler paper, plastic dividers, task pads, planner pockets and calendar pages.

If you find the discs are too small, you can even purchase expansion discs to increase the size and hold more. The notebook is available in two sizes (6.5 x 9 in and 9.5 x 11 in), smooth or textured and four colors.

They’re really nice quality and very affordable – so make sure you check out the line at Staples. They’re available in Canada and the U.S. in store and online!

The Blogher 2012 Awards

13th August 2012

First off, I have to thank my sponsor Chevrolet Canada for making my NYC trip to Blogher possible, and also for giving us some wheels to get there! THANKS SO MUCH!! I APPRECIATE YOU!!

The trip started with a road trip with two of my favorite people, Lindsey and Karen who I love even more after spending five days with them (not sure they would say the same), but they put up with me that long, so that clearly earns them bonus points.  I’m pretty sure we covered every possible topic during our many hours driving to and from NYC – none of us will be running for political office now.

Okay, so yes, technically I’m late with my Blogher post since everyone and their dog has already published theirs, but I blame the Olympics (and general laziness). Here are my overall thoughts on Blogher – it was HUGE (thats what she said). Really, really big and so, so many people. Too many I think, but that much estrogen in one building would make anyone nervous. Don’t get me wrong, I like most females, but the weird ones that push people, and are rude and steal swag from displays are just not my kind of females. Thankfully, most everyone I met were real sweeties, and had a great, fun vibe which just happens to be the exact vibe you need in NYC. Will I go next year? Probably not – it’s very close to my birthday, and I’d rather spend my 40th in NYC.

Yes, that gives you an entire year to plan the perfect birthday gift for me. You’re so welcome.

In the meantime, I would like to share my best of list for Blogher 2012.

BEST ROOMIES: Lindsey and Karen, although technically, the lovely Karen wasn’t officially a roomie, but she makes a great crasher. Also, she snores louder than I do, so thanks for that, Karen.

BEST NYC STREET SHOPPING: I’ve been looking for sunglasses that would look good on my face FOREVER, and I finally found some for $10 at a street vendor. Seriously, how can you resist me?

BEST JERSEY ACCENT: I liked Heather before talking to her, but I like her more now, because she sounds like Snooki, minus the dirty, drunk, leopard print tights factor. Also, she laughs at my jokes, so she’s a keeper.

BEST DANCER: I have NEVER seen someone bounce/jump/dance this much consistently for HOURS before Sparklecorn. Sam wins the award for best dancer hands down and if she can get someone to videotape her doing that for 30 minutes, she may just have the next big thing in fitness videos. Also, that is some funny, funny shit.

BEST Snub Comeback: You know when someone looks right at you, smiles and makes small talk and you’ve been talking to them on Twitter for three years and they have NO IDEA who  you are? That is the social media snub at it’s best – Karen snubbed me the first night of Blogher – we had a convo and she smiled politely and I knew she had no idea who I was. I thought it would be fun not to say a thing until she figured it out. Two days later, she  full on attacked me with her huge smile and kind of dirty hug, so I forgave her. I kind of love her.

SWEETEST Blogger: Hands down – the lovely Elaine is a doll.

Best Keynote: Martha wins, with Katie Couric a close second.

BEST Snark/Champagne Buddy: Emma is just funny as hell and I just want to figure out ways to spend many hours just hanging out with her because she is cool. Total girl crush.

BEST Cupcakes – sugar never tasted so good.

BEST Art: By best, I mean strangest because I still don’t get it at all. I love a great museum, so I took some time to check out the MOMA since it was so close to the hotel. No offense to Marcel Broodthaers, but “Belgian Lion” or “found object in frying pan” makes no sense to me. My 5yo leaves found objects all over the place, so technically I am living in a messier version of a modern art museum. Goldmine! YES!

Did you go to Blogher? Did you like? Will you go next year??

Martha Stewart Home Office Supplies with Avery

9th February 2012

I have to be honest with you right now.

I’m not sure who or what I love more – Martha Stewart or office supplies.

I’m not kidding – I LOVE office supplies and the cuter, nicer, more attractive – the BETTER.

So when I read on Twitter that Martha was coming out with her own line of office supplies,  I was immediately excited.

Martha, Martha, MARTHA!

Oh, Avery, whoever thought this up deserves a HUGE raise. I know, it was probably Martha.

I called and found out that my Staples stores was carrying the line! Right after school, I drove to Staples and walked quickly (RAN) to Martha’s section. Sadly, this is not an exaggeration – ask the children.

I bought a ton and if I could have, I would have bought one of everything. Their stuff is pure fabulous.

You need to check it out – if my Staples is any indication, it’s selling like crazy!

I’ve been twice already, just for this line.

Just go, you will LOVE it.

FYI: This puppy isn’t sponsored by anyone other than myself. Martha is worth it.

The Black & Decker Ultimate Sandwich Contest

8th August 2011

Let me put this out there – I’m no Martha.

Martha being Martha Stewart – the goddess of all things.

However, I do try – sometimes successfully, and sometimes, not so much.

So, when I found out that I was one of the finalists in the Black & Decker Ultimate Sandwich Contest, I was really excited and slightly nervous. My usual turkey sandwich or grilled cheese wasn’t going to cut it this time. So I thought about it for a while, and even brainstormed with my husband – a man who will try anything once, and always goes the exciting route. (Yes, I’m that person that usually orders the same thing on the menu – every time. Yawn.) And then, it came to me!!!

One of the main requirements for the contest was that I had to use the Black & Decker Convection Countertop Oven when making my sandwich. So before I get into my sandwich recipe, let me tell you a bit about this fab machine. It’s really handy – you can broil, bake, toast and keep your food warm in it. It’s not as big as I expected actually, smaller than a microwave, and fits nicely on the countertop. It includes a bake pan and a removable crumb tray, and has tons of additional features including,

  • a 60-‐minute timer
  • Variable temperature controls
  • A Maximum bake temperature: 450˚F/230˚C
  • A Dual-‐position rack
  • A Power indicator light
  • A Stay-‐on feature
  • A Ready signal bell
  • An Easy-‐view glass door
  • A 2-‐year limited warranty

You can cook many different things in the Black & Decker Convection Countertop oven, including chicken, fish, SANDWICHES, fries, and even pizza (it can fit a 9″ pizza). In the summer months, when turning on the oven is less than appealing, this little oven is a great appliance to have. It will be available at Walmart Canada this month.

And now, onto MY ULTIMATE SANDWICH – I give you the BORED Mommy BBLT.

The Bacon Brie Lettuce and Tomato sandwich.

It sounds simple, but its deliciousness is in the details. I promise.

Here’s what I used: (yields two sandwiches)

  • Ace Bakery Rustic Italian Oval loaf – 4 slices
  • one hothouse tomato – sliced
  • romaine lettuce – 4 leaves
  • reduced fat naturally smoked bacon – 4 slices
  • french brie cheese – 4 slices
  • extra virgin olive oil – 1 tbsp.
  • AND President’s Choice Roasted Garlic Mayo spread – 1 tbsp
Now let’s make the sandwich!
1. Preheat the Black & Decker Convection Countertop Oven for 5 minutes on BROIL. Oh, and remember to actually turn on the machine – staring at it doesn’t make the thing turn on. I know that now.
2. While the oven is preheating, cook the bacon. Cook the bacon to your preferred crispness – for me it’s really crispy. Remove the bacon and let it bask in its glory, while you get everything else ready. Also, bacon makes the world go round – but I’m sure you already know that.
3. Prepare your other ingredients as well. Slice the tomato, wash and dry the lettuce, slice the brie, and slice the bread. Also have your olive oil and garlic roasted spread ready. This can of course be done ahead of time, but I’m a procrastinator – even when making a sandwich.
4. Take the two slices of bread, and brush on some extra virgin olive oil on both sides. Put the bread into the oven on the slide tray, and toast. After approximately two minutes, flip the bread and toast the other side. It took about two minutes per side to get it as crispy as I like it, but of course this is up to you.
5. Remove the toasted bread and it’s time to assemble the BBLT!
6. On one slice of the bread, place two slices of tomato, topped with two slices of bacon, and two slices of brie.
7. Place this back into the oven to broil and melt the brie, for approximately one minute.
8. Remove it carefully from the oven (the oven is hot of course, so use caution).
9. On the other slice of bread, spread the President’s Choice roasted garlic spread. Add the romaine lettuce, and your sandwich is done!
10. Slice in half, and eat the best thing ever.
Seriously, the gooeyness of the brie with the crispy bacon, fresh bread, lettuce, tomato and garlicky spread is DIVINE. Sometimes the best things in life are the simplest – a BLT is one of life’s little pleasures, but a BBLT a la BORED Mommy is pure YUM. I cannot lie, I can’t wait to make this again.
I do believe I am officially one degree closer to Martha.
But don’t just ask me, ask this guy. The guy who eats nothing I make him without having to douse it in some type of condiment. This time? He could not stop eating it, and eating it as is!!

Disclosure: I created this post as part of the Black & Decker Ultimate Sandwich contest as part of a Mom Central Canada program. I received a Convection Countertop Oven Courtesy of Applica Canada Corporation, exclusive licensee of Black & Decker Home. The opinions on this blog are my own.

For the Love of Cookbooks

27th June 2009

I am obsessed with cookbooks. There is nothing better than buying a new cookbook, taking it home and going through it page by page. At last count, I had 145 which may or not be alot for someone to own, and who doesn’t actually cook all that much. I just like to hold them, what can I say. My favorites are the ones who have beautiful pictures for each recipe, although I have all kinds. Here are some of my favorites – new and old:

EVERYDAY FOOD – GREAT FOOD FAST (From the Kitchens of Martha Stewart Living)

This is a beautifully illustrated book with 250 recipes, each one paired with a photo of the finished product. The book is divided into Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter recipes and also a special section for Basics. With the prep times clearly stated for each recipe, even I (Ms. Amateur, slightly useless cook) could make something brillaint with this cookbook. Its one of my absolute favs.

Italian Comfort Food: Intensive Eating from Fresco by Scotto Restaurant

I discovered this cookbook after seeing the Scotto family on the Today show during a cooking segment. I adore that this book is filled with these great old family photos of this large Italian family, and that the book is dedicated to their grandchildren. They even make a point of thanking their staff by name. Love that.  The recipes are amazing – if you love Italian food, you will love this book. Our favorites include Spaghetti Pie, Meatball Lasagna and Penne from Heaven. Some recipes may be a little more complicated than others, but they are all doable and all delish.

Real Simple: meals made easy

I subscribe to Real Simple magazine and was very excited when I found out that they had a cookbook coming out back in 2006. The cookbook follows the beautiful layouts of its magazine pages, with simple yet perfect photos for each recipe. The book has 75+ recipes and is divided into one-pot meals, no-shop meals, 30 minute meals, no-cook meals, freezer meals, shortcut meals and reliable sides. I particularly like that they have fresh takes on some common meals, but not too crazy so as to scare away a non-foodie. The shortcut meals are kindof hilarious and include french fry pie (oh yeah!) and ham-and-cheese waffle sandwiches.

Everyday Pasta – Giada De Laurentiis

This is one of four Giada De Laurentiis’ cookbooks that originated from her cooking show on the Food Network. When I was pregnant, I could have watched her show, Everyday Italian, for hours. I love all four of her cookbooks, but since this one focuses on pasta (my bestest friend), I thought I would include this particular one in my list. Again, beautiful illustrations make this cookbook great to look at as well. Besides pasta, it outlines recipes for appetizers, salads and dressings. My husband loves to cook from these books, and I love to eat whatever he dares make. Seriously, who doesn’t love a yummy casserole – there are many of those to choose from in this book.

Martha Stewart’s CUPCAKES

This is one of my newest cookbooks and it was the cover that sold me. Don’t we all have a special place in our hearts for a good cupcake? I love this book. It is beautiful to look at, and is similar in format to the Cookie book she released last year (which I also have and love).  It has over 175 recipes and ideas for the most amazing cupcakes. Divided into Swirled and Sprinkled, Dipped and Glazed, Simple and Sweet, Filled and Layered, Piped and Topped, Birthdays, Holidays, and Celebrations, this book has something for everyone. My favs include the Tiramisu cupcake, Streusel Cupcakes and Mint Filled Brownie Cupcakes. I’ll be honest, I get as much enjoyment looking at this cookbook as I do using it.

Ready, Steady, Spaghetti – cooking for kids and with kids Lucy Broadhurst

The least I could do as full-time mommy is include a cookbook for kids, because that’s just the kind of mom I am. This cookbook is by an Australian food stylist and it shows. The photos are fun and colourful. The book is divided into the following sections: little food, dinner time, eat your greens, sticky puddings, biscuits cakes and fetes, and let’s party. The recipes range from some common mom staples like blueberry pancakes, smoothies and pizza to some more original fare like chicken noodle omelette, pork pumpkin and cashew stir-fry.

It has been great fun discovering Twitter and entering your giveaways, so I thought I would offer my own. I have a brand new copy of Martha Stewart’s CUPCAKES to offer to one winner, who resides in either Canada or the U.S. This is not a sponsored giveaway – I picked up this book just today, so that I could gift it to one of you.  One winner will be chosen randomnly, from the comments.
