IMAX To The Arctic – Review & Giveaway

19th April 2013

I sat down and watched IMAX To The Arctic with the kids recently.

They’ve come to really enjoy watching “nature animal movies” thankfully – a person can only watch so many animated movies before they want to hide in the closet (yes, this is the true benefit to the walk-in closet).

To The Arctic, directed by the award-winning director of EVEREST, is narrated by Meryl Streep (LOVE HER) and features songs by Paul McCartney. We loved it – it was visually stunning and engrossing form the first minute, to the last. It was also very educational for me and the kids. Not only is it a story about “love, family, and survival in the harshest place on Earth” but also a chilling reminder of what is happening to our environment and how it’s affecting some of it’s most precious inhabitants.

It’s short (4o minutes) but so worth watching and sharing with the little people in your life – my kids have watched it several times since and it always leads to great conversation. The movie also provides insight on how to help if you’re so inclined – check out OneWorldOneOcean.org for more info!

Life of Pi – Movie Review And Giveaway

27th March 2013

Life of Pi Movie Review

Have you seen Life of Pi yet? We watched with the kids and it was unanimous in our house – we LOVED Life of Pi.

A “magnificent and moving” (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone) motion picture event that has been hailed as “a masterpiece” (Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times), taking in over $500 million in worldwide box office.  LIFE OF PI follows Pi Patel, a young man on a fateful voyage who, after a spectacular disaster, is marooned on a lifeboat with the only other survivor, a fearsome 450 lb Bengal Tiger named Richard Parker. Hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery Pi and his majestic companion make an amazing and unexpected connection.

The movie was visually stunning with phenomenal special effects – I had to keep reminding myself that what I was seeing was not real. It’s also very hard to believe that this was Suraj Sharma’s (young Pi) first film – he was glorious and the idea that he basically acted alone for most of the movie is amazing. Reminiscent of Castaway and Tom Hanks but substitute that volleyball Wilson for Richard Parker the tiger. I’m also a huge fan of Irrfan Khan (adult Pi) – I’ve loved him in so many roles and this one is no exception. This Oscar winning film (in Directing, Cinematography, Music and Visual Effects) will take you on an emotional journey where you will laugh and cry and believe. Life of Pi is absolutely an experience – a wonderful movie that everyone will enjoy.

The Campaign – Movie Review & Giveaway

7th November 2012

I knew nothing about this movie before I watched it, so I had zero expectations.

Then I watched it and laughed my ass off.

It is really funny. Yes, some parts are just stupid funny, but you will laugh at this movie.

Some plot via iTunes: “When long-term congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) commits a major public gaffe before an upcoming election, a pair of ultra-wealthy CEOs plot to put up a rival candidate and gain influence over their North Carolina district. Their man: naïve Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), director of the local Tourism Center. At first, Marty appears to be the unlikeliest possible choice but, with the help of his new benefactors’ support, a cutthroat campaign manager and his family’s political connections, he soon becomes a contender who gives the charismatic Cam plenty to worry about.”

I thought Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis were perfectly cast, as was Katherine LaNasa who plays Will Ferrell’s wife, Rose. Directed by Jay Roach (Meet the Parents), it’s sarcastic, and an over the top exaggeration of a political race, but it will make you laugh out loud. Of course it has its ridiculous and gross/vulgar moments but this isn’t a movie that you take too seriously.

I’m also a big fan of Marty’s ‘Bill Cosby’ cardigans.

And, Dylan McDermott is in this movie and who doesn’t love Dylan McDermott??? *eye candy*

Best Scene of the Movie: For me, it had to be the ‘giant arm’ scene – both my husband and I could not stop laughing at that part.

One of My Favorite Lines of the Movie: (Marty) “Dad, if you’re still holding a grudge because I wore Crocs to Mom’s funeral… like I’ve told you a thousand times, I’m sorry. Mom would’ve wanted it that way. She was casual.”

Watch it for a good laugh, but look away if you can’t handle a baby being fake punched. I’m sure it was a fake baby…ahem.

Magic Mike – Movie Review & Giveaway

21st October 2012

Magic Mike is a movie about male strippers. And naked things.

Male strippers and nakedness.

I think that pretty much sums it up.

To be fair, Magic Mike is played by Channing Tatum (PERFECTLY cast I might add – yes, he was a stripper in his former life and he can dance and you want to see his naked things). The movie, directed by Steven Soderbergh, is about Mike’s relationship with Adam (Alex Pettyfer), whom he introduces to stripping.

Reasons to Watch:

Despite thinking that my DVD might be broken since it took 20 minutes to get to the stripping, there are many nude man parts in this flick. If naked men rock your socks, this is the movie for you.

Also, Channing Tatum. Is. Just. Delightful.

On the negative side, I’m not a huge fan of Matthew McConaughey – he irritates me to no end so I tried to shut him out every time he was on the screen. Also, the story was kind of weak/boring, but then again let’s be honest, this movie is about stripping and hot dudes. Regardless, it is the perfect flick to watch with all your girlfriends – because of the nakedness. Watching with your best girlies will guarantee the laughs and a good time. Don’t watch with your husband – most men don’t have a sense of humour when it comes to dudes that are clearly hotter than they are.  Protect their egos and watch it without them.

Magic Mike is out on DVD Tuesday, October 23, 2012. The Blu-Ray combo pack has special features to watch including, extended dance scenes (ie. dirtier than the regular amount of movie theatre dirty), a dance play mode that allows you to play all the dance sequences back to back, and some backstage time with Channing Tatum who shares some how to stripper details (perhaps you’re in the market for a new career).

I’m giving away ONE Blu-Ray combo pack, DVD and Digital download of Magic Mike!!

To enter, leave a comment below and tell me if  you have a funny/interesting/weird stripper story. If you don’t, let me know why you want to win instead.

Rock of Ages – Movie Review & Giveaway

10th October 2012

Rock of Ages is just a FUN movie!

“In 1987 Los Angeles at the height of glam rock, infamous and outrageous rock star Stacee Jaxx performs at Hollywood’s legendary Bourbon Room club as it faces its final countdown. Meanwhile, an aspiring musician and a small town girl meet pursuing their dreams of music fame. The story unfolds through high energy dancing and heart-pounding hits of Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Journey, Foreigner, Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Whitesnake and more.”

I watched this with the husband who groaned the minute he realized it was a musical (ahem…I didn’t realize it was a musical before watching either). However, he watched the entire thing with me and I caught him singing along a few times too.

Reasons to Watch:

GREAT CAST: For the most part (sorry Julianne Hough & Catherine Zeta Jones – not a fan), I really like the cast. Mary J. Blige, Alec Baldwin (love him and yes he SINGS in this), Russel Brand, Malin Akerman and Paul Giammati were great.

– Tom Cruise transforms into this rock god and I was surprised that he was SO GOOD at it.

– For those who lived the 80s (not me because I am SO young – not really), the references from the clothes to the bad hair to the huge cell phones and cell phone carrying BAGS are hilarious. How could the 80s be so hideous and hilarious at the same time?

– The absolute best thing about this movie is the MUSIC. You cannot help but sing along to every song, and yes you will know all the words. It’s big haired, sweaty leather, karaoke – good times.

– There was actually a moment when one of the characters reminded me of Andrew Ridgeley and George Michael, and all I could think was, oh how I miss Wham. (We all miss Wham, no?)

So will this flick win an Oscar? Nope (most won’t actually) but it’s a fun rental. Yes it’s weird that Alec Baldwin sings in this movie, but then even weirder things happen (in this movie – no spoilers). Also, I now have a girl crush on Malin Akerman – wowza. And Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise) wears a studded codpiece that will make you pause the movie and get close to the screen to figure out what exactly you’re looking at. Yes, my husband asked me what the hell I was doing. “Research of course” was my answer.

Best Line of the Movie:

Sherrie: I’m a stripper at the Venus Club. Drew: I’m in a boy band. Sherrie: You win.

Watch it or not? WATCH it if you want to relive the 80s, sing some rock songs, and see Tom Cruise, his tight pants and his codpiece.

I have one Blu-ray Combo Pack for one lucky winner!! Just leave me a comment below telling me your favorite song from the 80s. If you’re too young to remember the 80s, I’m sorry but we can’t be friends.

Dark Shadows – Movie Review

2nd October 2012

So much to say, but first a little introductory blurb from iTunes:

“Director Tim Burton brings the cult classic series “Dark Shadows” to the big screen in a film featuring an all-star cast, led by Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Helena Bonham Carter. In the year 1750, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from England to start a new life in America, where they build a fishing empire in the coastal Maine town that comes to carry their name: Collinsport. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet…until he makes the grave mistake of falling in love with a beauty named Josette DuPres (Bella Heathcote) and breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death-turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive. Nearly two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972, a stranger in an even stranger time.”

I sat down to watch this knowing nothing except that it was another Tim Burton/Johnny Depp movie. However, being a fan of their past movies (especially Sleepy Hollow), I knew I would enjoy its campiness, quirky fun nature that is a guarantee when you’re watching a Tim Burton flick.

Reasons to Watch:

– As usual, Johnny Depp is fantastic. He totally transforms into this vampire – the makeup is incredible and he is believable as Barnabus Collins, right down to the way he moves his hands.

– Bella Heathcote (she plays Victoria & Josette) is gorgeous and has this very billowy, eerie look about her that is perfect for her characters (think Shelley Duvall in The Shining). This is the first thing I’ve seen her in, and I can’t wait to see more – perfectly cast.

– The movie is just gorgeous to watch (signature Tim Burton) and dark and fun. I think it’s the perfect Halloween flick too, especially for someone who isn’t much of a horror/slasher flick fan.

I will tell you that although it is pegged as a comedy, I didn’t necessarily find it that funny. There were three different instances where I chuckled (yes I chuckle sometimes) but I can understand why this one would be difficult to absolutely peg into one specific genre.

Favorite Line of the Movie: “How soon can the horses be ready?” “We don’t have horses. We have a Chevy.”

Watch it or not? WATCH it, especially if you’re a Tim Burton fan and/or if you love Johnny Depp. The husband and I both gave it a 7 out of 10.

I have one DVD/Blu-ray/Digital copy of Dark Shadows for one lucky winner!! Just leave me a comment below telling me your favorite Johnny Depp movie!

CONGRATS TO #13 – INSANE MAMACITA!! Thanks to everyone who entered! More DVD giveaways to come!!

Documentary Watch – Project Nim

19th September 2012

Project Nim is a documentary about a baby chimpanzee named Nim that is taken away from his mother to be raised with humans to see if he could be taught to communicate using language.

To say it’s a fascinating film is an understatement  – I thought it was very well done, both entertaining and thoughtful. The movie interchanges between original footage and present day interviews with all the individuals involved in the project, over the years.

What I found surprising is how much the movie is not just about Nim the chimpanzee, but the teachers and individuals involved. Power struggles, ego trips, injuries, inappropriate relationships, unhealthy attachments – you name it, it’s all there. There are many shocking moments.

I thought the way those involved dealt with Nim’s inevitable development into a more mature (and more dangerous) chimpanzee was so heartbreaking and disgraceful. The documentary is a very tough watch in many parts, but it is absolutely a must see!!

Check out the trailer below:

Snow White And The Huntsman – Movie Review

18th September 2012

First, let’s take a moment and just stare at this glorious picture above.

I know it’s not the official movie poster, but again…who cares. Now let’s stare at that pic some more.

Alrighty then.

Some official plot from iTunes: “From the Producer of Alice in Wonderland comes a special Extended Edition of the visionary movie that turned a legendary tale into an action-adventure epic. The evil Queen Ravenna (Academy Award® winner Charlize Theron) will rule forever if she can take the life of Snow White (Kristen Stewart), so she dispatches the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) to track her down. But the wicked ruler never imagined that the Huntsman would train the girl to become a brave warrior, skilled in the art of war. Filled with intense battles and spectacular visual effects that “shouldn’t be missed” – Shawn Edwards, Fox-TV, Snow White & the Huntsman – Extended Edition includes more thrilling action not seen in theaters.”

I had high hopes for this one, despite Kristen Stewart being cast as Snow White. I didn’t even have to watch to know that was one big mistake on casting’s part. She is awful – monotone, and the same facial expressions throughout the entire movie. Ugh. Can you tell I’m not a fan?

First off, I thought the movie was beautiful to watch. It had some cool special effects and truly gorgeous visuals, however it seemed to drag on and I found it boring in parts. Boo.

I thought Charlize Theron was fabulous as the Evil Queen – very evil and screamy (yes that’s a word). I really liked her and enjoyed watching her – probably because it’s like looking in the mirror. Ahem.

Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman was delightful – never has there been a hotter man running through a forest, all sweaty and dirty and hawt. If anything, just rent it to watch him run through the forest – and then watch it again in slow motion.

You’re welcome.

And yes, that dwarf that looks incredibly like Bob Hoskins, was Bob Hoskins.

Watch it or Not? I say WATCH IT, but don’t throw things at the television when Snow White is on screen although you may want to. It’s a good date night rental, but not for the little ones – there are a few frightening scenes.

Have you seen it? What did you think?

The Five Year Engagement – Movie Review

17th September 2012

I watched The Five Year Engagement a few days ago and this is what I thought of it.

First, some official plot summary, thanks to iTunes: “From the producer of Bridesmaids and the director of Forgetting Sarah Marshall comes an irreverent comedy about an engaged couple who keep getting tripped up on their long walk down the aisle. Tom (Jason Segel) and Violet (Emily Blunt) seem destined to live happily ever after, but as one hysterical delay follows another, everyone starts to wonder: can they survive the engagement? Co-starring Chris Pratt, Alison Brie, Rhys Ifans, Kevin Hart and Mindy Kaling, The Five-Year Engagement Unrated is filled with more fun, more laughs and more outrageous footage not seen in theaters.”

This is one of those movies that I watched the first time and thought it was just MEH. But like Knocked Up and the rest of those Judd Apatow flicks, I appreciate them more after a few viewings. (Yes, I watched it three times – don’t judge).

Reasons Not To Watch – I like to get the bad stuff out of the way first

  • WAY Too Long: It could have ended at least twice before it actually did, and it would have been fine. The middle of the film could use a good edit.
  • Rhys Ifans’ character – Winton: I wanted to punch him every time he was on the screen. Totally unlikeable, pompous ass.
  • Painful to watch scenes: There is one scene in particular involving Jason Segel’s character and a co-worker that is SO BAD, that it is painful to watch. Pure awful.

Reasons To Watch

  • Jason Segel and Emily Blunt are really cute together and have great chemistry throughout.
  • The “sweater tuxedo” will make you laugh out loud.
  • Violet (Emily) and her sister, Suzie (Allison Brie) have an amusing convo involving Elmo and Cookie Monster and it’s very cute.
  • I thought Allison Brie (from Mad Men fame) and Chris Pratt (Parks & Recreation) stole the movie, killing every scene they were in – hysterical every time.

Favorite Line of the Movie: “C is for condom. That’s good enough for me.”

Watch it or Not? WATCH IT but keep in mind that it’s about a 7 out of 10 because it could have been so much funnier. And shorter.

Documentary Watch – IMAX Born To Be Wild – Review

23rd April 2012

I love a great documentary – and I’ve seen some great ones.

IMAX Born to be Wild is one I just watched last week and I’m so glad I did.

I watched it with my husband and the kids and we all really enjoyed it.

Morgan Freeman narrates the 41 minute documentary that follows two different teams that work to rescue and rehabilitate orphaned baby elephants and orangutans. The doc follows Dr. Birute Mary Galdikas in the rainforests of Borneo, and Dr. Dame Daphne M. Sheldrick in Kenya and the results are amazing.

It’s a gorgeous film to watch and unbelievablly fascinating and I was captivated from the start. The animals are SO cute and their relationships with their caregivers are so beautiful. These are people who LOVE these animals and spend every waking moment, and NIGHT with them, to make sure they feel safe and comfortable. I was shocked to see how loving and selfless they are to these baby animals – I’ll admit there were a few moments that made me teary.

This is an educational, fun and entertaining film to watch with the entire family – both my five and eight year old really loved it. After the film, they had lots of questions about the animals and wanted to learn more about them and where they lived.

This is a great family film and a nice break from the usual family fare. Watch it – you won’t be disappointed.

IMAX Born to be Wild is now out on DVD!
