2017 Netflix Resolutions

1st February 2017

I’m not a big New Years resolution person. Mostly because I never keep them. Ever.

But Netflix resolutions? That’s something I could totally do. Netflix and I are besties after all.

Yes that sounds sad. No I don’t care. I’m confident like that.

So, here are my 2017 Netflix Resolutions!!!

I WILL WATCH RIGHT AWAY:

  • THE CROWN
  • STRANGER THINGS
  • The OA
  • BATES MOTEL

I WILL FINALLY FINISH WATCHING:

  • SUITS
  • GILMORE GIRLS
  • THE MINDY PROJECT
  • HOUSE

I WILL WATCH WITH MY FAMILY:

  • LEMONY SNICKET
  • BOB ROSS (My 10yo is OBSESSED – he’s her screensaver. Seriously).
  • TRON
  • MIRACLE

I WILL:

  • Make sure to remember to alternate Pepperoni Pizza with Chinese takeout on Friday night Movie Nights.
  • Remember that you can never have enough Skittles, Diet Coke, Sour Cream & Onion chips and Prosecco on movie nights. Or any other day for that matter.
  • Wear my finest flannel jammies, or my finest cozies during all Netflix viewing. Bra is optional.

What are your Netflix resolutions???

Surviving the Holiday Break with Kids AND Netflix #StreamTeam

31st December 2016

The Christmas Holidays are coming to an end…..or are they?

Yes, it’s New Year’s eve but with school not back until the 9th, the holiday break continues. It’s ok though. The kids have promised not to fight, yell or say they’re bored for the next nine days.

It could happen.

In the meantime, we’ll amuse ourselves with various xmas gifts, activities involving snow, sprinkles and bowling balls and of course, NETFLIX!!!

With the release of some great new shows this month like Gilmore Girls, Fuller House Season 2 and the new Netflix/Dreamworks series Trollhunters, the odds of hearing I’m bored from the brood will hopefully be greatly diminished.

I’d also like to send Netflix a personal thank you for their new download option, so the kids have something to watch on the holiday road trips. It really cuts down on the slapfights when their hands are busy holding their ipads, so thank you so much.

And if you have younger kids, don’t forget to take advantage of their on-demand New Year’s Eve countdown options. You can choose from ten different videos, from Beat Bugs to Skylanders to Fuller House, and make it midnight whenever you want the little people to head to bed. I miss those days, when I could trick my kids into going to bed at 8pm.

Happy New Year everyone! Hope everyone has a fun New Year’s Eve! I’ll be here binge watching Life in Pieces (again) in my flannel penguin pyjamas, with a Diet Coke i.v. and sour cream and onion chips on standby. Jealous?

Gilmore Girls Date Night with Mom and NETFLIX! #StreamTeam

23rd November 2016

gilmoregirls_movie_night_us_final

It’s HERE!!!!!!!!

THIS FRIDAY (November 25th!) Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life premieres on Netflix! Is it just me or have we been waiting FOREVER for this? It deserves a celebration, don’t you think? In honour of the show and that amazing bond that Lorelai and Rory share, the premiere of Gilmore Girls is the perfect time to have a Girls Night In with your Mom (or daughter, sister, girlfriend…..any fab lady friend will do.

Did you know?

  • 61% of mothers and daughters feel sharing TV shows with each other helps them build a stronger relationship.
  • A recent survey revealed that almost half of women (45%) wish they spoke to their mother more often.
  • More than half of mother-daughter duos surveyed (54%) report post-show discussions are the best part of sharing a show together.
  • Almost half of moms and daughters (45%) think watching together brings them closer.

I’m going to have to agree with these stats. When Sex and the City was still on the air, I’d watch the show with my Mom and we’d laugh hysterically the entire time. And the Greek/English post-mortem was always my favorite part. It was our Friday night ritual and we always looked forward to it, not just for the show but for the time we’d get to spend together.

Fast forward a million years, and I now have my own kids. I’m actually going to be watching this new season of the Gilmore Girls with my 10 year old daughter who invited me to be her Friday Night date.  We’re so excited – we’ve got treats, hot chocolate to enjoy in our new Netflix/Luke’s mugs (thanks Netflix Canada!) and our warmest jammies ready to go. Want to officially invite your mom/daughter to watch with you? Here’s an invite to send their way…

How about this one?

Ok. One more….

You’ve got your invites ready, all you need now is a tv and snacks and you’re ready to watch the LONG awaited four episode (only four?!!) revival of this much loved show.

Date Night with Mom is ON.

Family Movie Time Reboot #Streamteam

4th October 2016

We are official back to school and back to our fall routine, finally. I love summer and summer break but by the end of the summer, I am ready to be back to a more scheduled lifestyle. Mommy needs a break. Plus it’s cardigan weather and who doesn’t love a cardigan???

Over the summer we watched a ton of movies and shows with the kids whenever we wanted. During the school year however, we watch our movies mostly on the weekends. On Fridays, we have pizza and a movie night. We make homemade personal pizzas then choose/fight over which movie to watch.

(Side Note: Here is the yummiest, easiest personal pan pizza recipe ever. We use Naan bread as the crust, tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and then whatever toppings you want, from pepperoni to peppers, and then throw it in the oven at 350. The kids love making their own pizza, they cook super fast because you’re using Naan as the crust and they’re delicious and healthy). I’m a regular Martha Stewart.

Unless it’s a movie that was just released, Netflix is always our go-to for movie night. Thankfully, the kids are older now so they’re much more open to watching documentaries, and classics and John Hughes films. Honestly, re-watching great movies like Ferris Bueller or Mean Girls is so much more fun when you can watch it through your kids’ eyes. I don’t even feel THAT old when I do.

My favourite thing to do for movie night lately is something I did as a kid with my siblings. I move the coffee table out of the way, and make a huge bed on the floor, with several duvets and comforters and pillows. We turn out all the lights and grab some snacks and it’s officially movie time. It’s simple but the kids love it, which makes me love it too.

boredmommy

So what are some of the movies we’ve seen so far, that we really enjoyed?

  • Zootopia – LOVE it. It’s adorable and clever and really funny.
  • He Named Me Malala – Absolutely fantastic documentary. A must see.
  • The Little Prince – This is actually a new release and not on Netflix yet but it was so so good. We rented it and the kids watched it three times before the rental time ran out.
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens – A huge hit in our house for all of us.
  • Teen Titans Go! – Not a movie, but my kids are obsessed with this show.
  • I Am Big Bird – LOVE LOVE LOVE.

And some movies that are on the MUST SEE LIST coming up this month include:

  • The Breakfast Club – it’s time to share this movie gold with the tweens for sure.
  • Splash – Tom Hanks and a mermaid. Enough said.
  • Zoolander – This one is a maybe – I haven’t seen it so I’m not sure if it’s appropriate.
  • Coraline – Perfect for a Halloween re-watch – both kids think it’s totally freaky.

HAPPY MOVIE WATCHING!!

What we’re watching on Netflix this summer #StreamTeam

29th July 2016

We are a Netflix family. The kids, the husband and I are big fans

If it weren’t for my need to watch The Real Housewives of every city in the U.S. of A, we would probably cancel our cable subscription, but alas, not happening.

So what are we watching this summer??

ME:

I’ve been watching some documentaries and stand-up comedy specials that I’ve really enjoyed.

Ali Wong: Baby Cobra – She is HYSTERICAL. This is one hour of hilarious joy – WATCH IT!!

AMY – A fantastic documentary about Amy Winehouse. Totally wrecked me.

LUTHER – My girlfriend Laura has been telling me to watch this show FOREVER, and I finally sat down and watched it and totally binged on it. It was so good, and so well done, that it’s probably one of the best shows I’ve seen in ages. Also, Idris Elba is very pretty with an accent, so there’s that. And the man can act. Watch this one a.s.a.p!

luther

The HUSBAND:

Daredevil – Season 2: LOVED IT. He liked the first season, but thought the new season was amazing.

Marco Polo – Season 2: LOVED IT.

The 100: He’s a big fan of this show.

STRANGER THINGS – LOVED IT and thought it was very scary, so I won’t be watching this one.

Stranger-Things

The Kids:

NICHOLAS: We’ve been watching The Office together, and it’s a new favourite for both of us. He’s also a big fan of Video Game Highschool, and Sherlock. We tried to watch the second season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, but we didn’t love it as much as the first season.

the-office

NASIA: She is my little animal lover, so we were thrilled to discover a show called The Bionic Vet. She also loves Fuller House, Victorious and Mako Mermaids. She’s so cute.

Countdown to New Year’s with Netflix and a Giveaway!

31st December 2015

NYE_CareBears

Netflix is genius.

Do you have little kids who desperately want to stay up until midnight on New Year’s Eve to ring in the New Year, whereas you’re thinking, “NOPE?” Thanks to Netflix, you can trick them into thinking it’s midnight, at anytime you like tonight!

Netflix is launching six on-demand countdown specials that parents can use to ring in the new year anytime! They can choose when it’s time to say goodnight and the kids choose how to celebrate with their favourite characters including: Puffin Rock, Care Bears & Cousins, Inspector Gadget, King Julien, and favorites from DreamWorks Animation like Mr. Peabody and Sherman and Project Mc2.

Netflix surveyed parents in the US, UK, France, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Italy, Spain, and Mexico recently and found that 55% would love to be able to ring in the New Year with their kids early, using a special countdown. With 95% of Canadian parents spending this special night with their kids, Netflix’s early countdown options are a brilliant idea. I wish I had had this option when my kids were younger. Sadly, they’re too old to trick at this point so I am REALLY looking forward to dealing with exhausted tweens tonight.

Their poll also found these interesting stats about Canadian families and how they’ll be celebrating this New Year’s Eve:

  • More than a third of Canadian parents would use a special New Year’s Eve countdown as a way to get their kids to bed early (34 per cent)
  • 51 per cent of parents feel that having an on-demand New Year’s Eve countdown will allow them to celebrate as a family
  • Over 70 per cent of parents would start their special countdown before 11 p.m., with one in five parents choosing 9 p.m. as the ideal time to ring in those famous 10 seconds (20 per cent)
  • 65 per cent of parents plan to spend time with their significant other after putting their kids to bed before midnight

To ring in the New Year, I’d love to give away a little Netflix love to one lucky winner. Enter below to win a 6-month membership to Netflix Canada!!! This is open to Canadian residents only and will run until January 7, 2016!! GOOD LUCK and a HAPPY and HEALTHY NEW YEAR to you and yours!!

What I’m Watching on Netflix Instead of Sleeping #SleepingIsOverrated #StreamTeam

1st December 2015

netflix-logo

My bedtime battle days involving my kids are over, thankfully. The kids are pretty good about going to bed and know when they’re too tired to function and can’t really be bothered to fight it. I on the other hand, am not the best at sleeping regular hours like a normal person. I’d rather Netflix than sleep these days. Actually I’d rather Netflix than do anything at night, especially when it’s so cold out and I’m already wearing the jammies. Let’s be honest, after the bra comes off, a fire couldn’t get me to leave the house.

After the kids are in bed is really the only time I get to watch television, which is convenient since most of my tv watching is not appropriate for them anyway. So what am I watching these days??? Right now I am HOOKED on the Netflix Original series Marvel’s Jessica Jones. It is SO good. This is the second (Daredevil was the first) of five Netflix/Marvel properties on the way.

jessica-jones

Jessica Jones stars Krysten Ritter who is totally badass, as Jessica Jones. The cast is great and includes Mike Colter (The Good Wife), David Tennant (Doctor Who), Rachel Taylor (Grey’s Anatomy) and Carrie-Ann Moss (The Matrix). Originally, I planned to watch it with my 11-year-old but it’s rated TV-MA (for  and after the first episode, we both decided we’d watch something else together instead. Daredevil anyone?

I also watched three fantastic documentaries this week that I really enjoyed. netflix-documentaries

I’m no fashionista but I love clothes and love fashion books and documentaries. Both Dior and I and Iris do not disappoint. Dior and I (2014) is a behind-the-scenes look at the House of Dior and the first couture collection by their new designer Raf Simons. It also features and focuses on the incredible seamstresses of Dior, some of whom have been a part of the fashion house for over 40+ years. It’s a great watch.

Iris is a documentary of the beloved New York fashion icon Iris Apfel, and I absolutely LOVED it. You will fall in love with both Iris and her adorable husband. It’s hard to believe that she’s 93-years-old. She is hilarious and amazingly talented and so in love with her husband that it’s hard not to adore this film. I promise you, you will adore it too.

Banksy Does New York surrounds the famous graffiti artist’s October 2013 project, “Better Out Than In”, in which he created a new piece somewhere in New York every day for the entire month of October. It’s amazing to watch New Yorkers become so addicted to finding the piece he creates each day before it gets painted over or even stolen. It will make you wish you had been there. If you love Banksy or want to know more about him, you should watch the other documentary first Exit Through The Gift Shop – it’s fantastic.

Have you seen any great documentaries, movies or shows on Netflix lately? Feel free to share – I’m always looking for suggestions!

Family Movie Nights Kick It Old School with Netflix #StreamTeam

9th October 2015

netflix-logo

We have a family movie night every Friday, every single week, sometimes even Saturdays. Sometimes we’ll watch a new movie but most often we’re on Netflix, looking for something all four of us want to see. It has to be something  to amuse both kids, and keep even the adults entertained. At this point, we’ve seen every animated movie known to man, so lately the adults have been picking the movies, and we’re going old school.

The kids are now 11 (almost 12) and 9 and are old enough to see some of those great movies from the 80s and 90s,  that we all love. We’ve already seen a few, including:

  • Adventures in Babysitting
  • Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
  • The Addams Family
  • Honey I Shrunk the Kids

netflix-movies

The kids loved all four although I will say Ferris Beuller is getting the heaviest rotation at our house – as it should be. All four are fun and hilarious and great picks for a family movie night.

Here are a few of the latest old school favourites I’ve added to our must see family movie night list:

  • Rocky
  • Footloose
  • Can’t Buy Me Love
  • Mean Girls

netflix-movies

And a big thanks to the lovely Netflix Canada people who sent us a great package to help us enjoy our movie night even more this weekend, now that Daddy is back from three weeks of travelling. Happy Movie Watching!!

Three New Kid Shows on Netflix #StreamTeam

24th August 2015

There’s always great new content on Netflix every month and Netflix has added some new kids programming this summer that your kids will love.

First up, DINOTRUX!

dinotrux

Dinotrux is an original Netflix series from Dreamworks! It’s a show where half dinosaurs, half construction vehicles exist and work together to build a better world and to fight against D-Structs. It’s super cute, geared towards the younger set and all ten episodes of Season One are streaming now.

Dragons: Race to the Edge

dragons-race-to-the-edge

If you’re a fan of the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, you’ll love their new Netflix Original, Dreamworks series Dragons: Race to the Edge. It’s funny and we love that it’s voiced by the actors from the movie as well. The first season has ten episodes and they’re perfect for enjoying with the entire family.

Project Mc2

Netflix-Original-Project-Mc2-Horizontal-Display-Art-FINAL-HiRes

This one is my eight year old daughter’s favourite new Netflix Show. Project Mc2, another Netflix original, is about four super smart girls who work together as spies, using their science and tech skills. She thought it was funny and loved the science aspect to it. There are only three episodes available so far, but we’re hoping for more soon!

Have you watched any of these shows yet? What did you think??

Great Movies Featuring Unique Families On Netflix #StreamTeam

2nd June 2015

netflix-logo

I come from a big Greek family. My parents have been married 50+ years, have five kids (including their favourite….ahem), who are all married (except my stubborn older brother) and are still married to the same people and have nine children among them. All of us live in the same city except for my brother and his family. On major holidays, we come together to celebrate which for Greek people means we eat until we crash on any available couch. Every single Christmas, we all come together at my parents’ house and have our 21 people family sitting around a giant makeshift table. Every. Single. Year.

thankful-thanksgiving-food-family-eating-diet-funny-ecard-iKF1

I guess you would say that my family is as traditional as it gets (with a whole bunch of Greek thrown in). But I know we’re not necessarily the norm these days. My entire life my dad would tell us kids that no matter what, your family comes first and they’re what matter most. And as I’ve gotten older and had my children, I realize how right he is. But this is true regardless of what your family looks like. Your people are your people and that’s that.

There are so many fun flicks on Netflix, that feature non-traditional families (hello segue) to enjoy with your kids. Here’s a few we really enjoyed:

And some great tv titles for the entire family – personally I think Gilmore Girls needs to be mandatory viewing for all humans. Also, if you haven’t seen it yet, make sure to check out the first season of Netflix original Grace and Frankie.

So get some snacks, and sit with your people and enjoy!
