Great Movies Featuring Unique Families On Netflix #StreamTeam

2nd June 2015

I come from a big Greek family. My parents have been married 50+ years, have five kids (including their favourite….ahem), who are all married (except my stubborn older brother) and are still married to the same people and have nine children among them. All of us live in the same city except for my brother and his family. On major holidays, we come together to celebrate which for Greek people means we eat until we crash on any available couch. Every single Christmas, we all come together at my parents’ house and have our 21 people family sitting around a giant makeshift table. Every. Single. Year.

I guess you would say that my family is as traditional as it gets (with a whole bunch of Greek thrown in). But I know we’re not necessarily the norm these days. My entire life my dad would tell us kids that no matter what, your family comes first and they’re what matter most. And as I’ve gotten older and had my children, I realize how right he is. But this is true regardless of what your family looks like. Your people are your people and that’s that.

There are so many fun flicks on Netflix, that feature non-traditional families (hello segue) to enjoy with your kids. Here’s a few we really enjoyed:

And some great tv titles for the entire family – personally I think Gilmore Girls needs to be mandatory viewing for all humans. Also, if you haven’t seen it yet, make sure to check out the first season of Netflix original Grace and Frankie.

So get some snacks, and sit with your people and enjoy!

Grace and Frankie #NetflixOriginal #StreamTeam

Grace and Frankie is the latest Original series to debut on Netflix. It’s the story of two very different women whose lives are changed forever when their husbands (who are business partners) come out and declare their love for each other as a gay couple. The series features an amazing cast, including Jane Fonda, Lila Tomlin, Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston.

Season one consists of 13 episodes (roughly 30 minute episodes) and I’m a few episodes in. I have to admit, I didn’t love the first couple of episodes, but there was still something that made me want to keep watching, and see how their lives play out, as couples and individuals. It does get better, but honestly, with the caliber of this cast, I WANT to LOVE IT.

The couples are very different – there’s Grace (Fonda ) and Robert (Sheen) who are very serious and refined and hate each other. And Frankie (Tomlin) and Sol (Waterston) who are free spirits, and absolutely love each other and the National Spelling Bee. The women were not friends before their husbands’ revelation, so it’s fun to see their very different personalities try to comfort each other, throughout the trials of the divorce and everyday life and new experiences like dating again, their children and even an earthquake.

It really is the entire cast that makes all the difference here – they’re very well cast, but Lily Tomlin (Frankie) and Jane Fonda (Grace) are my favourites, and just make every scene so much better. Honestly, I couldn’t adore Lily Tomlin more if I tried.

There are some pretty funny moments so far, especially between Fonda and Tomlin. But, I really want it to be funnier and messier because messy is funny and real, and nothing this complicated comes together so easily in a pretty little bow. That said, I’m really looking forward to how this is going to play out.

The entire season of Grace and Frankie is now streaming on Netflix.

Alone Time With Netflix #StreamTeam

30th June 2014

Netflix_StreamTeam_BadgeOh how I adore my alone time with Netflix.

It really doesn’t take much to make me happy after the kids are in bed – a iced latte, pyjamas, many pillows and my Netflix. I love it so much, and I’m ok with that. I like that I can relax in bed, and watch some great tv shows, and binge watch at my leisure.

Of course, I have my favourites:

ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK – I may have watched the new season over a two day period. Fantastic second season and excited to see Season Three.

HAPPY ENDINGS – This one is an old one, but whenever I need a laugh, every episode makes me howl. I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve watched them but it’s my go to happy place show.

THE KILLING – SO good. So sad it’s almost over but crazy excited about Season four coming up in July!!!

SUITS – Fantastic show – witty, smart, and full of obscenely attractive people. Love it.

I also have a very long list of shows that I have yet to watch that are conveniently on Netflix. I LOVE that I don’t have to wait a week to see the next show – seriously, binge watching is where it’s at.

I can’t wait to watch:

SHERLOCK – My cousin in Toronto and I are constantly texting each other about what we’re watching (we are both addicted to really bad reality tv) and she RAVES about this show. I’ve only heard great things so it’s number one on the list.

Veronica Mars –  I adore Kristen Bell, so I’ve always been curious about this show.

The Good Wife – Oh, Mr. Big, you had me at hello.

Bates Motel – I’d love to see this but I’m a total wimp so, it’s been on the watch list with Dexter for a while now.

I love Netflix – did I say that already? Seriously, it’s worth every penny.

Do you have Netflix? What are your favorite shows to binge watch???
