Heart of Haiti

11th January 2011

The 2010 Haiti earthquake was a catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake, with the epicenter of the quake only 16 miles west of Haiti’s capital.  The earthquake occurred on Tuesday, January 12, 2010. By January 24 at least 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater had been recorded.  The Haitian government reported that an estimated 230,000 people  died, 300,000 were injured and 1,000,000 made homeless. The earthquake caused major damage in Port-au-Prince, Jacmel and other settlements in the region.

As we approach the one year anniversary of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, I’m proud to work with the Clever Girls Collective to promote the Heart of Haiti project (in collaboration with Macy’s).

Heart of Haiti, founded by Willa Shalit, works to promote and support Haitian artisans, their families and their communities. These artisans use unique, raw materials, such as stone, paper mache and iron, to create beautiful art, jewellery, and other beautiful items for your home.

Some of my personal favorites:

By purchasing any of these products, you are helping Haitian artisans “preserve their cultural history, restore their homes and rebuild their communities. As Master Artisan Serge Jolimeau states: “with help and hard work, we will rise again.”  This is an absolutely wonderful cause, that I hope you will consider supporting.

For all the bloggers that would like to learn more, there is also a blogger tour to Haiti, with Founder Willa Shalit, that will be happening in February. For more information about this three day tour of Haiti, please go here.

You can also find Heart of Haiti on Twitter (hashtag: #HeartofHaiti) and Facebook.

I was selected for this very special “CleverHaiti” opportunity by Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity. All opinions are my own.
