Winter Barbecuing With Butterball Turkey Franks #ButterballCanada

28th February 2013

I’m going to be working with Butterball Canada in a series of four blog posts over the next four months – this is my second post.

Is it spring yet? Are we all counting down to the moment that we can put away all the snow pants and boots for another year? If you’re a fan of warmth, sandals, and barbecuing then the winter season is probably cramping your style right about now.

But wait, you don’t have to stop grilling in the winter!! All you need is a barbecue, someone (in my case, the husband) who can shovel a path to the barbecue and someone who is willing to stand in said snow to barbecue. Yes, the husband has done this many times – it’s one of the reasons I’ve kept him around this long. But then said husband goes on a business trip to Denver, so we are forced to break out the indoor grill or grill pan instead.

I decided to try out the Butterball Turkey Franks for the first time this week. I’ve never eaten a turkey dog before so I was curious to see what it would be like. First off, these franks are lactose free and gluten free which is a great option for those with intolerances. They contain no pork or beef and no MSG.

Have you ever seen a turkey dog before? Well, I wasn’t expecting it to look pretty much like a regular hot dog, but it actually does. They smell the same too – yes, I smelled them.

Now, don’t make the mistake I made and tell your kids that the ‘hot dogs’ you’re making are actually turkey dogs, because if they’re like mine, they will run screaming from the room. They wouldn’t even try them because I birthed the pickiest eaters on the planet. So they had air for dinner, and I had turkey franks. It all worked out in the end.

I do prefer to eat a barbecued ‘hot dog’ while sitting on the deck swatting at mosquitoes but an indoor grill/grill pan will substitute nicely. Once it’s ready, all it takes is some toppings to make it delicious. I usually only add ketchup and mustard on my hot dogs so the Butterball Turkey Frank got the same treatment.

Then I thought I would make one for my husband even though he’s in Denver, because that’s true love, and because he’s more adventurous in his toppings.

Obviously, you can top your turkey frank with anything you like – I tend to be conservative (read: boring) in my toppings. So how did it taste? Actually, I was pleasantly surprised – I thought it tasted good. Yes, I could tell it wasn’t a beef wiener but it still tasted like a “hot dog” to me. I don’t actually eat hot dogs all that often, but I would totally grill these at a family bbq without hesitation.

Supporting Parker, the IWK Foundation and the Children’s Miracle Network

13th June 2012

This is my final post as a #MiracleMoms, in support of the IWK Foundation Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Miracle Network.

During this campaign, I have been supporting Parker, a 10 year old from Halifax who was diagnosed with Leukemia. He is a cutie and a very determined young man, who can write a great speech, as you can see in this excerpt below:

My name is Parker and I’m 9 yrs old.  In July of 2010 my life changed…I was diagnosed with Leukemia, a form of blood cancer.  The first 6 months of my treatment were intense, tough and sometimes painful but I needed to do all this stuff to clean up my blood.  I’m now on a maintenance program until Sept 2013.  Until then, I’ll take chemo pills daily and will go to the IWK monthly to get chemo in my port-o-cath.

The good thing about my cancer is that it has a cure.

Although my energy level is a little low, I did not miss too much school last year and I was able to continue playing hockey and lacrosse.  I decided not to play hockey this fall because skiing and curling are my real passions.   Maybe I should take up cycling!

Another good thing about my cancer is that NOW, I only do what I’m passionate about.

He is such an inspiration.

This is why I was so excited to become a part of this campaign and spread the word – it’s such a worthwhile cause.

As it is coming to the end, I am asking you to work with me to support this wonderful hospital. Every dollar donated counts and helps support this hospital. My personal goal is to raise $1000 and I need a lot of help getting there. The great thing is you can now donate via Paypal as well as the other standard forms of payment.

Please consider supporting me, the IWK Foundation and the Children’s Miracle Network!!

Finish Revolution Challenge – Cheesy Pasta

21st May 2012

As part of the Finish Revolution Blogger Program, I have blogged about my deep appreciation for Finish products and how well they work with my dishwasher.

Yes, I loved them even before becoming a part of this blogger program.

I have also been asked to test the Finish Quantum tabs product to see if they could effectively clean some of the toughest stains that I encounter while cooking for my lovely family. Usually, the dishes that give us the most grief are those used to bake casseroles in the oven, and those that I’ve left out for a couple of days and haven’t bothered to deal with (I call these lazy pots). Don’t judge.

For this post, we decided to go with a lazy pot of cheesy pasta.

Here is the lovely before:

Please note the caked on, dried out mess that I was almost certain my beloved dishwasher could handle – thanks to Finish!

And here is the after, following a regular wash and no rinsing or scrubbing beforehand.

Hello clean pot. I’m not sure if it translates to the photograph, but the pot was spotless and squeaky clean.

Thanks Finish.

The Feeling of Accomplishment and Introducing Quaker Oatmeal Cookies – CLOSED

6th April 2012

Maybe you can relate to this, but as a stay-at-home mom to two kids, I kind of lost myself in the process of working hard to raise two great kids. My needs fell way behind everyone else’s needs and my priorities became all about the kids. In the process, I lost my light for the most part. As a result of that, I stopped taking care of myself. Well, a few weeks ago, I decided it was time to get me back. After several false attempts, with more talk than effort, I finally got in the right mindset and I’m actually accomplishing what I set out to do. I’m getting myself back by getting more organized, trying to spend more time with friends and family, and most importantly, I’m working hard to get back to my glory weight, and I’m doing great so far.

Quaker has also recently accomplished something new (nice segue, no?) by introducing a new line of Quaker Oatmeal Cookies. Available in soft baked and crunchy oat variety, the cookies are available in several flavours, are 170-180 calories each, made with whole grains, contain 6-8 gms of fibre and zero trans fats. Personally, I also LOVE that they’re individually wrapped. The cookies are now available and can be found at most grocery stores.

Quaker would also love to see you accomplish something for yourself and would love to help you do it!

Thanks to Quaker, I’m giving away some yummy Quaker Oatmeal Cookies and a $75 Visa Gift Card!!

Please Note: (Yes, I realize talking about cookies and “getting back to my glory weight” is perhaps an ironic combination, but I’m all about feeling accomplished, and as of three weeks ago, the only people eating these cookies in my house are everyone BUT me – and yes, I tried them before that and yes they’re delish.)

UPDATE: CONGRATS TO: Brandy InsaneMamacita – thanks to everyone who entered!!!
