Countdown to New Year’s with Netflix and a Giveaway!

31st December 2015

NYE_CareBears

Netflix is genius.

Do you have little kids who desperately want to stay up until midnight on New Year’s Eve to ring in the New Year, whereas you’re thinking, “NOPE?” Thanks to Netflix, you can trick them into thinking it’s midnight, at anytime you like tonight!

Netflix is launching six on-demand countdown specials that parents can use to ring in the new year anytime! They can choose when it’s time to say goodnight and the kids choose how to celebrate with their favourite characters including: Puffin Rock, Care Bears & Cousins, Inspector Gadget, King Julien, and favorites from DreamWorks Animation like Mr. Peabody and Sherman and Project Mc2.

Netflix surveyed parents in the US, UK, France, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Italy, Spain, and Mexico recently and found that 55% would love to be able to ring in the New Year with their kids early, using a special countdown. With 95% of Canadian parents spending this special night with their kids, Netflix’s early countdown options are a brilliant idea. I wish I had had this option when my kids were younger. Sadly, they’re too old to trick at this point so I am REALLY looking forward to dealing with exhausted tweens tonight.

Their poll also found these interesting stats about Canadian families and how they’ll be celebrating this New Year’s Eve:

  • More than a third of Canadian parents would use a special New Year’s Eve countdown as a way to get their kids to bed early (34 per cent)
  • 51 per cent of parents feel that having an on-demand New Year’s Eve countdown will allow them to celebrate as a family
  • Over 70 per cent of parents would start their special countdown before 11 p.m., with one in five parents choosing 9 p.m. as the ideal time to ring in those famous 10 seconds (20 per cent)
  • 65 per cent of parents plan to spend time with their significant other after putting their kids to bed before midnight

To ring in the New Year, I’d love to give away a little Netflix love to one lucky winner. Enter below to win a 6-month membership to Netflix Canada!!! This is open to Canadian residents only and will run until January 7, 2016!! GOOD LUCK and a HAPPY and HEALTHY NEW YEAR to you and yours!!

Great October Picks on Netflix Canada #StreamTeam

28th October 2014

If you read my blog, you’ll know that we are huge fans of Netflix in our house.

This month, we noticed that Netflix set up a new section in the Genre section titled Halloween Favorites, which were then further separated by Family options and those of the gory persuasion.

We’ve had the chance to watch several flicks with the kids this month that we really enjoyed. Some we’ve seen before but loved enough to watch again, and some new ones as well.

Some of the flicks we enjoyed as a family include:

Hotel Transylvania – the kids love this one and I do too, but oy Adam Sandler’s Dracula voice drives me crazy, and not in a good way.

Corpse Bride – Love it.

Addams Family Values – The kids fought me on this one because it looked “old from the 80s” but they loved everything about it.

Ghostbusters – We tried this one with the kids because I think we need to expose our children to the classics, but they weren’t into it. I watched it again after they went to bed because Bill Murray can no wrong, ever.

Without the kids, I watched:

Sleepy Hollow – I’ve seen this a few times but it is so good and so visually fantastic and creepy that it’s a must see on a regular basis. Johnny Depp is so good, he is absolutely in his element.

And I used to love watching scary movies but then I had kids, and I can’t seem to stomach them anymore, sadly. If I wasn’t such a wimp I would totally watch:

Cabin in the Woods – I’ve heard it’s funny and very scary and Chris Hemsworth is in it so there’s that.

Paranormal Activity – Seriously, I’ve wanted to see this since it came out, but the trailer makes me curl up in a ball and rock back and forth whimpering, so I’m thinking it’s not going to happen.

The Grudge – All I know about this movie is something to do with a shower, and a hand coming out of someone’s head or not. I have no idea but it looks too scary for this wimp.

Netflix Canadiana #StreamTeam

1st August 2014

We are a Netflix loving family – I believe I may have mentioned that a few times on this blog. The love just never dies.

This month, as part of the Stream Team, we checked out some great titles that have a little Canadiana connection. These titles are either made here in Canada, filmed here or take place here.

I sat down with the kids to check out some of these titles together, while others we’ve seen (several times) and seem to be on regular rotation already.

The kids and I both really enjoyed Alpha and Omega and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days – we actually love all the Wimpy Kid movies, but this one is the new favourite.

We also discovered a new favourite show – ELIOT KID.

It’s cute and hilarious – personally, I loved the look of the cartoon. My seven year old especially enjoyed the people with the giant eyeballs. It appealed to both my little one and my ten year old, which is always a huge plus because as they get older, it doesn’t necessarily happen that often anymore.

Some other great titles with a Canadiana link include the show Erky Perky and Johnny Test, which the kids have also seen and enjoy. I did try to convince them to check out some of the spookier titles like GooseBumps, with me but the little one wasn’t having it so we decided to keep it light.
