BioSteel Hockey Camp 2014 #MazdaFan

27th August 2014

We were thrilled to recently be invited to the BioSteel hockey camp in Toronto this year, sponsored by Mazda. Unfortunately, the morning of the event, my son who is a huge hockey fan, was very sick so we ended up having to cancel. To say that he was heartbroken is a huge understatement – he was crushed. He knew he was missing out on a great experience, and sadly, he was right.

BioSteel training camps are an annual week-long event that brings together some of the league’s best players for an intensive week-long training program. This year’s camp, sponsored by Mazda, had both on-ice and outdoor activities with the last day featuring a four-team tournament and a chance to win the camp cup. Players that attended included Michael Cammalleri, Tyler Seguin, Wayne Simmonds, Michael Del Zotto, Brian McGrattan, The Subban brothers – P.K., Malcolm and Jordan Subban, Chris Stewart, Michael Latta, Brett Ritchie, Jay Harrison, TJ Galiardi, Michael Dal Colle, Devante Smith-Pelly, Paul Bissonnette, Josh Ho-sang, Max Domi and more prospects. (Thanks to my fellow blogger Maria, who was also at the event that day for providing the player’s names.) Even the Great One, Wayne Gretzky made an appearance with son Ty.

I previously had four official videos posted here of the camp days, but they’ve since been removed for some reason. Thanks again to Maria for sharing her video of her day with me.

Check out this shoot-out goal by Jordan Subban during the camp.

Here’s the amazing shoot-out goal by Josh Ho-Sang that people are still talking about.

And Paul Bissonette’s Mazda commercial, filmed during the camp.

If you ever have the opportunity to go and check out BioSteel training camp, take it!

Get Your Dense Breasts Checked with ABUS

15th February 2012

Back in 1996, I had a cyst removed from my left breast.

I noticed it one day in the shower. I was too young to know that I should have been terrified.

I made an appointment to have it looked at, when it had grown so much that it had created a visible bump on my breast.

I had a mammogram but because I have dense breasts, I also had an ultrasound. It was clear, but I still wanted it removed.

It was a outpatient procedure – so at 23, I went to the hospital alone to have the cyst removed.

It turned out that this cyst that everyone thought was quite small, ended up being larger than a golf ball.

It left a terrible scar, and if I push on my breast where the cyst was, even today, I still feel the emptiness that cyst filled at one point.

However, the scar means nothing to me when it comes to my life, so I’m absolutely glad I did it.

Fast forward, 12 years, and two beautiful kids later, and I’m scared.

I’m scared every day, and every time I read about another woman finding a lump, getting sick or dying, my heart breaks for them, and for everyone they love.

That’s why I’m writing this post today – to feel less scared, and to support women taking control of their lives by being proactive and getting screened.

My friend Dee, who proves everyday that she is one strong, ballsy woman, is featured in a new video that features ABUS ultrasound screening. In the video, she gets a breast ultrasound at VIP Breast Imaging because she has dense breasts, as do I.

ABUS is specifically designed for breast ultrasound screening and diagnosis.  In one sweep of the machine, ABUS is able to take 600 images of the breast tissue and captures images approximately every two millimetres.  Unlike hand-held ultrasounds which can only capture specific areas of the breast, ABUS captures the entire breast in 3 dimensions, providing a much more detailed scan.

The ABUS ultrasound is not covered and costs $300, however your insurance policy may cover some of the procedure. It is also tax deductible. For more information, please contact VIP Breast Imaging at 525 University Avenue in Toronto  – toronto@vipbreastimaging.com, 647-350-2229.

Please watch Dee’s video:

Disclaimer: I was offered a free ABUS screening in exchange for this post.

A Family Weekend Getaway to Toronto

8th February 2012

We had a fantastic weekend away in Toronto this past weekend, with the kids.

We went to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

I got to go to a great dinner at Volos Restaurant with some fab ladies celebrating Winterlicious and #DineWithAmex

We shopped, ate and Starbucked at the Eaton Centre.

We explored the Distillery District, and took an insane amount of pics.

We had the BEST lunch at Mezes on the Danforth – can’t wait to go back.

We stopped at our new favorite kids’ toy store, Silly Goose Kids!

And of course, IKEA is always our last stop on the way out of town.

It was a great time and a much needed break from our day to day.

What are your must sees when you’re in Toronto with the kids?

Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto

    6th February 2012

We just got back from a long weekend away in Toronto with the kids and we had a great time. My eight year old son has become obsessed with hockey since playing floor hockey at school as an “Edmonton Oiler”. Unfortunately for his dad who is a Leafs fan all the way, his son is now an Oiler through and through.

My son’s only request for our trip was that he desperately wanted to go to the Hockey Hall of Fame, so we happily obliged him, and we are so glad we did.

He was SO happy. I took so many pictures, and every single one is just pure joy and awe.

He loved every moment, and if you have little (or big) hockey fans, I absolutely suggest visiting the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. They have so many great exhibits of all the hockey greats, you can watch films in their theatres, try your hand as a goalie and even call the plays during a real game clip. Of course, getting a pic with the Stanley Cup is an absolute highlight for any fan. Make sure to stop by their gift shop and pick up an official jersey – yes my 8yo was SO happy, that I forked over the $80+ dollars for an Edmonton Oilers jersey.

He has yet to take it off.

We will be back in the spring for sure – the eight year old said so.

(FYI: This post is NOT sponsored by anyone other than my own wallet).

What to Take to Blissdom Canada 2011

    10th October 2011

Blissdom Canada is coming, Blissdom Canada is coming.

If you’re on Twitter, I’m sure you’ve heard about Blissdom Canada since people have been counting down for weeks now. And here we are three days away (THREE SLEEPS!!) and it’s time to start packing – or at least think about packing.

I saw Loukia’s post about what to take to blogging conferences, so I thought I would take this opportunity to let you know what I’m taking to Blissdom because I know you are just DYING to know.

What BOREDMommy is taking to Blissdom Canada (also known as her annual four days of freedom):

    • iPhone – I sleep with the thing, so it’s not really a debate
    • Business cards
    • My new squeaky bras (Have you heard? I bought some Calvin Klein bras that literally squeak whenever I move – so if you think you heard my chestal region squeak, you are CORRECT!
    • WINE
    • Deodorant – because I want to smell fresh for my roomie, Lindsey
    • Cardigans, cardigans, cardigans – thanks to my lovely sponsor, Old Navy Canada
    • Camera
    • Notebook and pen – SO much better than a silly iPad (insert iPad envy here)
    • Colin Firth action figure
    • Starbucks card, loaded with many, many lattes
    • My uniform x 4 days – jeans, cardigans and flats
    • Cute pjs, in case I happen to run into some fabulous, semi-drunk women in my room at some point
    • Mints – I want to make sure my breath is minty fresh, when we’re making out.
    • My kissy face supplies – see pic above.
    • AND the last one, courtesy of my five year old – “Mommy, don’t forget your underwears, in case you pee yourself!”
    See You There, Girlies!!!

A Family Trip To The Toronto Zoo

    1st September 2011

Last Sunday, we surprised the kids with a trip to the Toronto Zoo – and we had a  BLAST.

It had been over three years since the last time we had been there, so both kids had zero recollection of the last trip, and since both are very interested in animals, we thought it was the perfect time to go.

We left early for Toronto and got there just after 10 a.m., at the same time as hundreds of other families. Other than the short wait at the door to buy tickets, the zoo is huge and can easily host all those people and not feel crowded or rushed in any way. We paid for our tickets, and also paid the extra $2.50 each so that we could see the special Stingray exhibit.

We walked for HOURS, and not once did we hear, “I’m bored” – I call that a total win.

My four year old loved the penguins, and we happily bought her a stuffed penguin and another penguin toy because, “Mommy I love penguins so much I have to have them at my home too, ok?”

My seven year old, who has become quite the adventurous spirit in his old age, was very excited about seeing the stingray exhibit. Both he and his dad pet the stingrays, and my son even fed the stingrays some dead fish. This from a kid who was afraid of his own shadow less than a year ago. Every time he touched a stingray, he giggled and shrieked – it was fun to watch. His other favorite (and mine too) were the jellyfish – he and I stood and watched them for a very long time. They are really amazing to look at.

If I have one major complaint, it’s that the animals refused to perform for us. Seriously, the lion was unimpressed, the giraffe completely ignored us and the polar bear was snoring away. Did they not know we were coming?? Also, FYI, animals smell – some more than others (I’m looking at you boa constrictor).

If we lived closer, we would have bought a membership but sadly we’re too far away to take advantage of the membership’s value. But, we had a blast and will definitely be back.

Take your little people to the Toronto Zoo – they’ll love it.

Disclaimer: This post is sponsored by no one but my husband’s wallet – thanks man friend.

The New LeapPad and My Very Famous Seven Year Old

    3rd August 2011

Last month, we were invited to go to a LeapFrog event in Toronto, for the launch of their newest product, the LeapPad. It’s basically a tablet for children, and it’s really impressive.

    My kids loved it.

While we were there, my seven year old had a chance to talk to Kris Abel with CTV News, and he was VERY excited to find out that he was going to be on t.v. He wants you all to know that he will be happy to share his autograph with all of you.

    Yes, he’s serious.

And I quote, “Mommy, I think I’m going to be so famous now, that I’m going to need my own computer now.”

    Hardy Har, my son.

Here’s the video below – The LeapPad segment is at 8:10 and Nicholas’ part starts at 10:03.

Disclaimer: I was not compensated for this post in any way.

    Fisher-Price Ultimate Playdate

    2nd May 2011

This past weekend, the family and I were invited to go to the Ultimate Playdate with Fisher-Price, sponsored by ParentsCanada.  The event was to promote Fisher-Price’s introduction of milestones to help parents determine which toys would be best for their children’s development.

The event had several different play stations set up, divided by the specific milestones. There was seating in each section and tons of toys for all the kids to try out. Also each station had people assigned to them, so they could help the kids try out the toys as well.

This was such a fun event, and I loved that it was really all about the kiddies. There were face painters, full size Little People characters, a dj, and a hilarious juggler/unicyclist/magician that my son adored. There were kid-friendly refreshments, and I’m pretty sure there isn’t much cuter than a four year old walking up to a juice bar and ordering her own beverage.

There were also tons of prizes given away and the one that my son was DYING to have, he actually won! He was so thrilled, and everyone was giving him high fives and  it was such a wonderful moment for him.

Big thanks to Fisher-Price and Parents Canada for a great event. My kids and I thank you!!
